What is a Retreat?A retreat is time spent away from yourordinary occupations, during whichyou can reflect on how you live yourfaith in your everyday work, family lifeand relationships with others.The atmosphere of personal prayerand recollection which is maintainedthroughout helps you to consider allaspects of your life and identify theareas in which you can improve.How is the retreatconducted?Meditations are given by the prieston the central themes of the Catholicfaith. These are combined with timesfor private prayer and examinationof conscience, and other devotionalexercises such as the Stations of theCross and the Rosary. Mass is celebrateddaily. The retreat is undertaken insilence to facilitate personal prayer andreflection.Participants may also talk over their ownsituation with the priest or organiser toobtain advice which is appropriate totheir specific circumstances.

Content of the retreatThe meditations and talks cover the following themes:• The meaning of our life• God’s designs for humanity• Our life in the light of God’s Revelation• God and individual freedom• Jesus Christ, true God and true man• The passion of Christ and the mystery ofRedemption• Eternal life• Family and Christian life• The vocations to marriage and celibacy• Ordinary work and holiness• Prayer and the sacraments in the life of the Christian• The greatness of ordinary life• The apostolate of the Christian• Our Lady, model of sanctityThe Retreats are directed by Opus Dei, apersonal prelature of the Catholic Church.Opus Dei aims to help people of all walks of life tostrive for holiness and to evangelise in a natural mannerwherever they are, especially through their daily work.
