National Honor Society<strong>John</strong> <strong>Hersey</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong><strong>Service</strong> and Leadership <strong>Project</strong>s2012-2013Procedures:1. Frequently check the NHS website for upcoming events, reminders and changes to the events.The NHS website can be accessed through the <strong>Hersey</strong> Home Page: jhhs.d214.org, click onactivities, scroll to NHS. This site will be routinely updated.2. Plan how you will earn 16 points. This year there will be deadlines throughout the year.All members must have completed at least six points by January 4, and the final tenpoints can be turned in until April 12, 2013 at 3:30 pm. Students can finish their pointsearly. Points must include the group NHS project. No student will be allowed to turn inall the points at the end. All scheduled event points need to be completed by APRIL 12,2013 at 3:20 PM. Obtain necessary forms and turn the form in by the deadline.THERE ARE NO EXCEPTIONS TO THE DEADLINE!!!!!!!3. Sign up for the scheduled events on sign up sheets on the NHS Bulletin board. Each sign upsheet will indicate how many students are needed for a particular event. Unless the event is asporting event, students are to wear black or khaki pants, a collared shirt or sweater, andappropriate shoes. Some events, such as volunteering at the Special Olympics, there is anextra form to complete and mail in to the correct person. THIS IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY.4. This year, 8 points can be earned through service to JHHS, 8 points are to be earned throughservice in the community, and some (>1 point) MUST be earn by participation in the NHSservice project. This wiil be a group service project specific to/sponsored by the NHS. Thereare many opportunities to serve in the community. If you need help thinking of a way in which tocomplete these points see Mrs. Hoijer or Mr. Kiepura for suggestions. We encourage you toattend SOS service field trips that occur during the school day. However, NO POINTS will begiven for service that takes place during the regular school day. Points will only beawarded for service that takes place on your own time.5. On the day of <strong>Service</strong> Event check in with the person listed for each activity and sign your nameon the attendance sheet. This is the only way you will be able to receive NHS credit. You donot need to complete an additional form if you are working at an event that has a sign up sheet.We will collect the sign in sheet from the check-in person.6. For any of the individual activities, the forms that need to be submitted are available on thewebsite. Complete the form, get the appropriate signatures, and return COMPLETED FORMTO THE NHS MAILBOX IN THE MAIN OFFICE. MRS HOIJER OR MR. KIEPURA MUSTPRE-APPROVE all individual out-of-school activities.<strong>Service</strong> points will not be given for activities for which you receive any type of compensation.This includes raising money for individual trips and working for political candidates.7. If you cannot attend an activity that you signed up for, you must cancel on the sign up sheets onthe NHS bulletin board, at least 2 days before the day of the activity or find areplacement to take your place. Remember one of the objectives of NHS is to provideleadership. This is one way to demonstrate leadership, to do something for a group or individualand not get anything in return.8. Continue to check NHS Website for open activities. In addition, outside agencies sometimescall later in the year after our initial meeting and ask for volunteers. We will advertise these


event on the website and bulletin board as they occur. Please refer to this as often as possible.Meeting reminders and upcoming events will be listed on the NHS activity page. If a sign up isnot on the NHS Bulletin Board, you will need to see Mrs. Hoijer or Mr. Kiepura.9. If you miss an activity that you signed up for without getting a replacement, you will be droppedfrom all other scheduled activities and will have to complete your points through individualactivities.10. All students must complete the National Honor Society Information Sheet by NOVEMBER 1,2012. If you are planning to join NHS, please submit your dues with your form to the NHSmailbox. IF YOU DO NOT WISH TO JOIN NHS PLEASE COMPLETE THE FORM,INDICATING THAT YOU DO NOT WISH TO JOIN AND RETURN IT TO THE NHS MAILBOXIN THE MAIN OFFICE BY NOV 1 ST .11. Students will not receive points for attending meetings. All meetings will take place in ROOM124A either before school at 6:45 am. ALL NHS Students are expected to attend. We will beworking hard at developing ways to work as a club at some new activities. The activity sponsor will have to sign the form.Submit for approval.Captain of a team-- (you may select one team per year) (Max 1)You will need to fill out an information sheet indicating your responsibilitiesand how your participation has differed from a regular team member. TheCoach will have to sign the form. Submit for approval.Special Ongoing SOS <strong>Project</strong>s/Night and Weekend SOS <strong>Project</strong>sExamples could be tutoring at a grade school, peanut day, and pen pal program, aSaturday SOS project etc. You cannot be receiving a credit/grade for this activity. Youwill need to fill out an information sheet indicating your tasks or responsibilities.Mr. Gunther will have to approve the form. Submit for approval.Outside of <strong>School</strong> <strong>Project</strong>s (2-3 hours each)Examples could be an event with your youth group, Eagle scouts, Omni, Pads,Habitat for Humanity, etc. You cannot be receiving a credit/grade/pay for this activity.You will need to fill out an information sheet indicating your tasks or responsibilities.The sponsor of your event will have to approve the form. Make sure you take a formwith you so you can get the signature. Submit for approval.Inside <strong>School</strong> <strong>Project</strong>s--with a <strong>Hersey</strong> teacher other than SOS (2-3 hours each)This activity needs to take place on nights or weekends. Examples could be a serviceevent with a club, sport team, special friends golf, Bingo, etc.You cannot be receiving a credit/grade/pay for this activity.You will need to fill out an information sheet indicating your tasks or responsibilities.The sponsor of your event will have to approve the form. Make sure you take a formwith you so you can get the signature. Submit for approval.Writing Well Tutor/after school tutor/math Tutor--15 days (Max 6 points)You cannot be receiving a credit/grade/pay for this activity. You will need to fill out aninformation sheet indicating your tasks or responsibilities. Mrs. Reilly/Mrs. Davis willrecord specific dates and then approve the form.
