Fire is apowerful natural element. Fireilluminates life and provides culturewith ceremony, medicine, food, warmth and above all a lore thatthe land taught the people. We must respect this as aninherited responsibility to bepassed on in our changing world. The challenge today is to keep thisrespect alive, not only in terms oflooking after the land but to healthe differences between people andtheir relationship to country.”Initiating Traditional Fire Practicesthrough the Traditional KnowledgeRevival Pathways (TKRP) methodology.Stage 1 Negotiations and Planningwith all stakeholders.Stage 2 Getting to know Country –Recording the process and knowledgeto establish first step for monitoring.Stage 3 First burn –recording, monitoring, observing.PLANTSMONITORKwern (Awu-Laya – KukuThaypan Language name)Heteropogon contortusBlack spear grassA tropical perennial tussock grassthat is an important indicatorspecies for a healthy understoryin many ecosystems whereit is present.PLANTSFIREMONITORPlacing the tools of westernscience in Indigenoushands to bring togetherTraditional EnvironmentalKnowledge and contemporaryenvironmental managementpractices.Traditional owners learnGPS skills to assist inmanaging country duringa western science firemonitoring workshop onCape York.LAWPEOPLELAWDew is an important TraditionalEcological Knowledge indicatorfor early dry season burning. The moisture supplied by heavywinter dew provides conditionsnecessary for regeneration ofspecies post fire and ensuresthat cool fires burn out over night.ANIMALSKnowingwhat it isBIO-DIVERSITYPEOPLEDigitally recording and supportingthe transfer of TraditionalKnowledge from the Elders totheir young people based on thetraditional methods as determinedby the Elders ensures the survivalof this Traditional Knowledgebefore it is lost forever.ANIMALSNyemyra (Awu-Laya – KukuThaypan Language name)Female Agile WallabyMacropus agilis.Traditional Ecological Knowledge:Important food resource. This species is considered in firemanagement law by ensuring thatthe animal is not trapped by fire, that areas remain unburnt and thatit has access to new shoots postburns in order to assist the animalwith successful breeding.Coming to know and understand firerequires guidance by Elders and fireknowledge holders through various stagesof cultural learning on country. Learningthe knowledge through a written or even avisual medium without that learning processon country means that components of theembedded nature of that knowledge in placeand people can be misunderstood.BIODIVERSITYThe canopy is sacred in KukuThaypan lore. Culturally it is againstmanagement law to burn the canopy.A healthy canopy provides essentialfood, habitat resources and climateregulation that ultimately all biotarely on. TEK helps to ensure firemanagement is applied in theright place, at the right time for theright reasons to support resilientfunctioning ecosystems andmaintain biodiversity.RESEARCH PROJECT (KTFMRP)&
