17th May, 2013 THE KENYA GAZETTE 2777Train and supervise workers safety ofmachinery use and otherprocedures/operations.Equipment e.g. fire extinguishers must beexamined by authorized persons.Ensure that materials are stored or stackedin such manner as to ensure their stabilityand prevent any fall or collapse.Ensure that items are not stored/stackedagainst weak walls and partitions.Design suitable documented emergencypreparedness and evacuation procedures tobe used during any emergency.Ensure that adequate provisions are inplace to immediately stop any operationswhere there in an imminent and seriousdanger to health and safety and toevacuate workers.Ensure that the most current emergencytelephone numbers posters areprominently and strategically displayedwithin the construction site.Well stocked first aid box which is easilyavailable and accessible should beprovided within the premises at all timesduring construction.Provision must be made for persons to betrained in first aid, with a certificate issuedby a recognized body. Firefighting equipment such as fireextinguishers and hydrant systems shouldbe provided at strategic locations such asstores and construction areas.Regular inspection and servicing of theequipment must be undertaken by areputable service provider and records ofsuch inspections maintained.Hazard-warning signs “NO SMOKING”,“SWITCH OFF ENGINE”, “SWITCHOFF MOBILE PHONE” at differentstrategic places at the proposed station.Pollution Ensure that workers at the excavation sitesand other dusty sites are adequatelyprotected from inhalation of substantialquantities of dust through provision ofsuitable protective gear.Provide workers in areas with elevatednoise and vibration levels, with suitableear protection equipment such as earmuffs.Suitable overalls, safety footwear, dustmasks, gas masks, respirators, gloves, earprotection equipment etc should be madeavailable and construction personnel mustbe trained to use the equipment.Ensure that construction workers areprovided with an adequate supply ofwholesome drinking water which shouldbe maintained at suitable and accessiblepoints.Sanitary Ensure that conveniently accessible, clean,orderly, adequate and suitable washingfacilities are provided and maintained inwithin the construction site.ImpairedVentilation andElectricityAll work places must be kept in a cleanstate, and free from effluvia arising fromany drain, sanitary convenience ornuisance during construction.Enough space must be provided within thepremises to allow for adequate naturalventilation through circulation of fresh air.There must be adequate provision forartificial or natural lighting in all parts thepremises in which persons are working orpassing.Circuits must not be overloaded.Distribution board switches must beclearly marked to indicate respectivecircuits and pumps.
