777 CAUSES OF TEMPERATURE CHANGESExploitation of <strong>the</strong> Svartsengl reservoir has caused <strong>the</strong>withdrawal of about 40 million tonnes of geo<strong>the</strong>rmal fluid(Thorhallsson, personal communication, 1983), This hascaused about 13 bar <strong>pressure</strong> drawdown In <strong>the</strong> reservoir . Adecrease In <strong>pressure</strong> causes <strong>in</strong>creased boIl<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> top of<strong>the</strong> reservoir. The recharge of cold water can <strong>in</strong>crease as<strong>pressure</strong> decreases In <strong>the</strong> reservoir. Episodic cold <strong>in</strong>flowfrom <strong>the</strong> overly<strong>in</strong>g ground water can take place In associationwith earthquakes. The decrease In <strong>the</strong> <strong>temperature</strong>could also be caused by a decrease In <strong>the</strong> lateral flow ofhot fluid. This chapter will deal with some of <strong>the</strong>possible cool<strong>in</strong>g processes <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Svartsengl reservoir.7.1 Boil<strong>in</strong>gThe sal<strong>in</strong>i ty of <strong>the</strong> geo<strong>the</strong>rmal fluid of <strong>the</strong> Svartsengireservoir is roughly 2/3 that of sea water. The saturation<strong>temperature</strong> of this salt solution is higher than <strong>the</strong>saturation <strong>temperature</strong> of pure water by a maximum of 2°C ata depth of about 2000 m (Michaelides, 1981; Grant, 1982)Little or no correction is thus needed when us<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>steam tables.Exploitation has caused a <strong>pressure</strong> drawdown which makes itpossible for <strong>the</strong> reservoir fluid t o boil at greater depththan it could <strong>in</strong>itially. In o<strong>the</strong>r words. <strong>the</strong> drop <strong>in</strong><strong>pressure</strong> caused by <strong>the</strong> exploitation has <strong>in</strong>creased <strong>the</strong>boil<strong>in</strong>g In <strong>the</strong> upper part of <strong>the</strong> reservoir. Dur<strong>in</strong>g boil<strong>in</strong>g.<strong>the</strong>rmal energy is used <strong>in</strong> chang<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> state of <strong>the</strong> fluidfrom liquid to vapour <strong>and</strong> this causes cool<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>reservoir. However, as <strong>the</strong> level of boil<strong>in</strong>g is migrat<strong>in</strong>gdownwards, hotter <strong>and</strong> hotter water comes <strong>in</strong>to boil<strong>in</strong>gconditions. This boil<strong>in</strong>g sustalns <strong>the</strong> steam cap locatedaround wells SG-2. SG-3 <strong>and</strong> SG-l O. The effect of <strong>the</strong>boil<strong>in</strong>g Is <strong>the</strong>refore to <strong>in</strong>crease <strong>the</strong> <strong>temperature</strong> of <strong>the</strong>steam cap. The <strong>temperature</strong> of <strong>the</strong> steam z one was about
