111 INTRODUCTION1.1 Scope of the reportThe author fulfIlled one of the requirements of the UNUGeothermal Training Programme Fellows by producing thiswork during the last ten weeks of the six month trainingduring the summer of 19B3 at the National Energy Authorityof Iceland, which was financed both by the United NationsUniversity and the Government of Iceland.The Training Programme commenced with a six weekintroductory lecture course on the relevant aspects ofgeothermics delivered by specialists from the N.E.A. andthe University of Iceland and complemented by appropriatefield excursions. The author further had specializedlectures, seminars, tutorials, field practices andsupervised readings on borehole geophysics and reservoirengineering for six weeks, and additional lectures andseminars during the two week field excursions to geothermalfields of Iceland.The author found it viable to take on this project as apractical exercise because of the availability of thetools involved and in view of the immediate applicabilityof the methods in the geothermal fields of his homecountry.1.2 Aims and objectivesThe Svartsengi geotherma l reservoir has been observed to becooling down. There are various possibilities for causingthis. Identifying the real ones and locating the optimumzone for feasible exploitation is important to ensure thatthe power plant will keep on producing for a long time.This problem can be tackled by studying the temperatureand pressure in one, two, or in three dimensions.
