LION’S ROARReception AssemblyThank you to our wonderful reception children for their assembly this morning where they were veryexcited to share all the amazing facts they had found out about animals. It was clear that they were soexcited to prepare the costumes and dances and loved being the stars in the movies that were shown. Here are two quotes from our reception children:The best bit is the dancing part and you have to listen really hard.— Manolo Reyes RADI loved flapping my wings with all the blue feathers.— Penny Butler RADNursery AssemblyOur next assembly will be the nursery children performing the Hungry Caterpillar, a great book by EricCarle. This follows up on the discovery science work they have done observing cocoons and watchingwith amazement the whole evolution process. Note this assembly is for nursery parents and siblings onlyand will be held in the Cluster F Assembly Hall.Year 1 Careers day / KS 2 Sports dayAs there is no assembly for the rest of the school on Friday 14 July, this will allow the year one CareersDay and the KS 2 Sports Day to begin earlier. As it is our first run through with the new format for KS 2sports day, this is for students only this time, but we look forward to inviting parents in the future.Careers DayAs I mentioned above, next Friday, the 14 June is Careers Day in Year One. The children will have theopportunity to hear from a range of Year One parents about their chosen career and what that entails. The children are encouraged to wear clothes found at home to reflect their possible chosen career. Please also bring in PE kit, trainers and socks.ReportsYou will be receiving your End of Year reports next Monday with the opportunity of making appointmentsto see the teachers in the final week of term.PTC s (Parent Teacher Conferences)/ SLCs (Student Led Conferences )The end of year Conferences will take place on Wednesday 26 June from 1-5pm. My favourite part was doing the leap frog in our DramaActivity. It was really fun to leap over people and watch them jump over other people. I alsoreally enjoyed the feast because an apple went into Sylvie’s apple juice! – Luci Hall 4SC2 7 June 2013THE BRITISH SCHOOL MANILATelephone 860-4800 Fax 860-4900 Website www.britishschoolmanila.org

LION’S ROARKey dates Term 3June10 June - Reports out to parents13 June - Primary Music Concert, 8-8.45am14 June - Nursery Assembly (for nursery parents only)14 June - KS2 Sports Day (students only)26 June - Primary Teacher Conferences/Student Led Conferences27 June - Shine Day28 June - End of school yearEnjoy your weekend!Glenn HardyPrimary School HeadYear 6 have a taste of senior schoolThe senior school has been filled with the sounds of very young voices this week, as Year 6 studentshave spent two days experiencing the senior school. They have spent their time familiarising themselveswith the layout of the senior school, meeting key staff, having time to talk about what they are lookingforward to and any concerns they may have, as well as experiencing a wide range of senior school lessons. It was good to see that at the end of the two days, their concerns had largely been allayed, andthat they were now really looking forward to becoming senior school students in August. On Thursday evening we welcomed the Year 6 parents to the senior school, where they too met key staffand had time to talk about their concerns. Every year we see that the parents are actually more worriedthan the students – which is in many ways natural, as it means their ‘babies’ are growing up – but oncethey see their sons and daughters happily settled into senior school, by the start of September most parents’concerns have disappeared.Activities weekThank you to all those parents and students who completed the surveys regarding Activities Week. Thefeedback on this event was overwhelmingly positive, although as always we are looking for ways to improve, and we are already implementing one or two changes for next year. We will be assuring studentswho got their third choice activity this year of a place in their first or second choice next year; we will belooking for ways to further improve our communication with parents; and we will continue looking forways to ensure that our activities represent the very best value for money. In terms of the activitiesthemselves, there appears to be strong demand for a trip to Europe, probably the UK, and we will lookinto this for next year. We are, however, keen to make sure that all our trips and activities are muchmore than a sightseeing opportunity – we would like all our activities to challenge our students in someway, be that through demanding physical activity, furthering cultural engagement or inspiring creativity. We are also keen to ensure every activity includes a service element – most do at the moment, but notall. Details of next year’s Activities Week will be announced on 4 October.Memorial for NatalieMany of you will recall the sad passing of Natalie Lincklaen Arriens last year, and many of you also attendedthe beautiful service held for her in San Antonio Church. The Student Council, as well as some ofNatalie’s friends, have been planning a suitable memorial for her in school. They decided that a plaque4 7 June 2013THE BRITISH SCHOOL MANILATelephone 860-4800 Fax 860-4900 Website www.britishschoolmanila.org

LION’S ROAR(written by her friends and donated by her family), located next to the bench where she often sat duringbreak and lunchtimes, would be most appropriate. In addition, her friends have painted the bench pink,Natalie’s favourite colour, and next to the bench we have planted some plants which will bear pink flowersfor years to come. These were all unveiled at lunchtime today in a short ceremony involving Natalie’sfamily as well as students and staff of the BSM community. It is nice to think that, although those whoknew Natalie will eventually move on from BSM, her memory will remain as a reminder of the brave littlegirl, with the twinkling smile.Year 13 university offersI am sure that many of you have seen the article in the Philippine Star on Tuesday, congratulating ourstudents on the offers they have received from universities worldwide. It was especially appreciated thatPresident Aquino took the time and trouble to write a personal message to congratulate our students. We are extremely proud of the fact that 93% of our students received offers from their 1 st choice or‘reach’ university or college. Students categorise the universities they are applying to in 3 ways – Reach,Target and Safety. ‘Reach’ schools tend to be top schools who normally ask for higher grades than a studentis currently predicted. ‘Target’ schools are schools that normally make offers to students with thetype of grade that the student is currently predicted. ‘Safety’ schools are those that normally make offersbelow the grades that the student is currently predicted. Most students also identify which school istheir first choice, others do not necessarily have a first choice but have any of their ‘reach’ schools astheir first preference.Of those offers received, five are from Ivy League schools, nine are from what are termed the ‘HiddenIvy’, and thirty five are from Russell Group schools. In addition, thirty six other offers are from schoolsrecognised as being in the Top 50 Worldwide Schools (as ranked by Times Higher Education).Ivy LeagueColumbia University 1Dartmouth University 1University of Pennsylvania 2Yale University 1Hidden Ivy LeagueAmherst College 1Boston College 1Claremont McKenna 1Fordham University 1Johns Hopkins University 1Stanford University 2University of Southern California 1Wesleyan University 1Russell GroupImperial College 1King's College London 5London School of Economics 2Newcastle University 1Queen Mary, University of London 1The University of Sheffield 1University of Edinburgh 4University College London 4University of Birmingham 1University of Bristol 3University of Exeter 4University of Manchester 1University of Nottingham 1University of Warwick 5University of York 1Top 50 worldwide schools (Times Higher Education)Carnegie Mellon University 1Boston University 2University of California Berkeley 2University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) 1University of Michigan 1New York University 4University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill 1University of Hong Kong 1University of Hong Kong Science and Technology 1University of British Columbia 14University of Toronto 4McGill University 45 7 June 2013THE BRITISH SCHOOL MANILATelephone 860-4800 Fax 860-4900 Website www.britishschoolmanila.org

LION’S ROARMosquitoesAre small, annoying, and leave itchy bites all over your arms and legs. While this is a fair description ofthe mosquito, some interesting facts about the mosquito may be surprising. Most adult mosquitoes live for about two weeks.Only female mosquitoes bite—they need the protein for their eggs.Male mosquitoes survive by sucking on nectar and other plant juices. The welt that appears after a mosquito bites is an allergic reaction to the saliva that is injected intoyour skin to prevent your blood from clotting.Mosquitoes rarely travel farther than 300 feet from their birthplace.Light colors are less attractive to mosquitoes than dark colors; thus, mosquitoes are more likely tochoose a victim wearing darker colors.Mosquitoes are found all over the world, even in cold places like the Arctic.Mosquitoes prefer dark places like trees, grass and shrubs.Like humans, mosquitoes have food preferences—not all mosquito species bite humans, some preferbirds, horses, frogs or turtles.Tropical countries have very hot weather, humidity and it rains very much which becomes the perfecthabitat for mosquitoes. One obvious reason is that the hot climate present during all the year and thelarger volume of rains directly affect the formation of breeding grounds, the larger number and variety ofnatural reservoirs and animal diseases that can be transmitted to humans, the largest number of possibleof diseases.Since many mosquitoes breed in standing water, source reduction can be as simple as emptying waterfrom containers around the home. This is something that homeowners can accomplish. For example, eliminating mosquito breeding grounds by removing unused plastic pools, old tires, or buckets; byclearing clogged gutters and repairing leaks around faucets; by regularly changing water in bird baths;and by filling or draining puddles, swampy areas, and tree stumps. Eliminating such mosquito breedingareas can be an extremely effective and permanent way to reduce mosquito populations without resortingto insecticides.Mosquitoes have poor eyesight. They cannot see objects more than 30 feet away from them and cannoteasily distinguish between objects of similar size and shape. However, their sense of smell is highlyefficient and they can locate hosts within a wide area. Their antennae also contain sensitive thermalreceptors, which are used to locate blood near skin surfaces.Adult mosquitoes rest during the day, usually on tall weeds or other vegetation. Make yard lesshospitable to mosquitoes by mowing your lawn regularly, and keep weeds away from foundation.Tips on How to Prevent Dengue Ensure the child has applied mosquito repellents on skin before going to school. When going outdoors during day time, these mosquitoes are actively biting, thus try to wearlong-sleeved shirts and long pants tucked into socks. Avoid heavily populated residential areas. When indoors, stay in air – conditioned or screened areas. Use bed nets if sleeping areas are not screened or air-conditioned. Cover water storage containers to prevent breeding of mosquitoes If the child has fever, don’t send him/her to school. Observe and properly hydrate. If you have symptoms of dengue, please see your doctor immediately.BSM Nurses7 7 June 2013THE BRITISH SCHOOL MANILATelephone 860-4800 Fax 860-4900 Website www.britishschoolmanila.org
