With its bright colours andclinical focus, Mygo has alwaysbeen about fulfilling the posturaland emotional needs of youngchildren and their families. Thenew 2010 Mygo is able to helpan even broader range of kidsto carry out everyday functionsat home, in the classroom oreven out and about.

The adjustability of thenew Mygo seating systemprovides clinicians withthe tools to maximise:Pelvic stabilityTrunk and head alignmentLeg and foot positioning“Seating systems are aimed at providing an appropriatelevel of postural support for each child, as well asoffering comfort, skin protection and stability to enabledaily functional activities to be carried out at home andat school. As postural control is a pre-requisite for mostfunctional tasks, the inability to control posture has asignificant impact on function” (Wright et al, 2010).Wright C, Casey J, Porter-Armstrong A. Establishing Best Practice in SeatingAssessment for Children with Physical Disabilities using Qualitative Methodologies.Disability and Rehabilitation: Assistive Technology 2010; 5(1):34-47.

Posture, Function & ComfortPelvic stabilityThe most important feature of any seating or mobilitysystem is its ability to provide pelvic stability (for tilt, rotationand obliquity) as this gives the optimum base for trunkand head alignment and upper limb function. The MygoSeating System has a range of unique features to supportthe pelvis for each individual’s postural needs.POSTUREPELVIC STABILITY CHALLENGESSACRAL SUPPORT AND CUSHIONING FOR PELVIC STABILITYIntegral to the Mygo Seating System’s pelvicharness is the flexible sacral support and hipguides. The flexible sacral support adjusts eitherto encourage a lumbar curve (neutral pelvis) oraccommodate a posteriorly tilted pelvis. The hip guides provide lateral pelvic support, and encourage a midline position, but can alsoaccommodate asymmetry by being off-set whenneeded. The generous seat cushion allows immersionof the ischial tuberosities, helping to prevent theirforward excursion and providing pressure relief.Additional pads can be used to increase theramping under the femurs when necessary.Posterior pelvic tilt Pelvic rotation Pelvic obliquity AlignmentThe pelvic seat depth (seat back to gluteal crease)can be adjusted from a point on the seat whichcorrelates to the position of the ischial tuberosities. As we rotate about the ITs, this means the lateralsupports stay in the correct anatomical position whenthe seat back is reclined, ensuring the best possiblestability. The pelvic seat depth can be adjustedasymmetrically in order to accommodate a fixedpelvic rotation, along with the sacral support andbackrest which can also be angled independently.HARNESSING FOR PELVIC STABILITY4-point pelvic harnessThe multi-adjustable 4-pointpelvic harness on the MygoSeating System ensures stabilityof the pelvis by providingsupport across the anteriorsuperior iliac spines (ASIS).The 4-point attachments (two atthe hip guides and two at 90º)mean that the harnesses stay inthe correct anatomical position.FUNCTION & COMFORTWhere it can be achieved, the optimum position ofthe pelvis for function is in neutral or slight anteriortilt. This pelvic position allows the spine to adoptits natural lumbar, thoracic and cervical curves, aligning the trunk and balancing the head. In turn, when the body is well supported, it maximises thepotential for upper limb function for playing, feedingetc; improves opportunities for social interaction;and maximises breathing and digestive capacity.Pelvic cradleThe Mygo Seating System can also be fitted with the pelviccradle (patent pending). The flexible adjustment in the backsection can encourage a posteriorly tilted pelvis into neutralalignment, and the overall design prevents users slidingforward. This gives unsurpassed proximal pelvic positioningand support for more complex body shapes. Where pelvicmobility is reduced, and tilt, rotation or obliquity need to beaccommodated, either harness, along with the hip pads, can successfully stabilise the pelvis in these unique positions.Comfort is integral to sustaining a functional posture as itreduces unwanted movement which can occur when childrenare uncomfortable. The new 2010 Mygo Seating System hasa 50mm one-piece seat cushion which consists of a singlelayer of new reflex foam which provides excellent pressuredistribution. It allows immersion for the ischial tuberosities toaid pelvic stability as well as providing comfort and maintainingskin integrity. Additional high density foam can be simplyadded under the cushion to accommodate pelvic obliquity or toprevent bottoming out under the ischial tuberosities or femurs.

Posture, Function & ComfortTrunk and Head AlignmentSeating systems need to provide appropriate trunkand head support because this contributes to thestability of the pelvis, and facilitates upper limb function, concentration, and social interaction. The Mygo SeatingSystem’s trunk and head supports can be individuallytailored to match the needs of each user.POSTURETRUNK AND HEAD ALIGNMENT CHALLENGESWith the addition of the contoured shoulder sectionon the new 2010 Mygo, not only is the height of thebackrest extended for greater growth, but shoulderprotraction is facilitated for better trunk alignment, upper limb function, and neck and head stability.DYNAMIC BACKRESTLeckey now offer a dynamic backrest option forthe Mygo Seating System for children with extensorpatterns. Leckey is carrying out research withStrathclyde University including long term field trialswhich will provide evidence of the clinical benefits ofdynamic backrests. Available in 100N and 150N it isavailable on new Mygos or can be retrofitted ontoexisting Mygos.HEAD SUPPORTSPelvic stability and trunk alignment are the basisof head control. However when additional headsupport is needed, the Mygo Seating System is fullycompatible with the full range of Leckey, Whitmyerand Otto Bock head supports to meet eachindividual’s needs.Kyphosis Lordosis ScoliosisTRUNK SUPPORTThe Mygo Seating System’s flexible sacral supportallows the sacral and lumbar regions of the spineto be supported or accommodated whether thespine is kyphotic or lordotic. The sacral supports onthe Mygo Seating Systems are also able to rotate, giving proximal support to those with a fixed pelvicor spinal rotation.Flexible scoliosis can be managed by using thelateral supports in conjunction with the pelvicharness to provide 3-point positioning. The seat to back angle on the Mygo Seating Systemopens to 115º, and when used in conjunction withthe lower leg guides, ensures that even whenhamstrings are very tight, an appropriate seatingposture can be achieved.Where additional chest support is required, theMygo Seating System has a trunk harness anda cushioned chest support.115ºFUNCTION & COMFORTThe trunk harness has detachable shoulder fasteningsto allow increased use of upper limbs.Communication is a vital, but an often overlooked aspectof seating systems. The new 2010 Mygo Seating Systemhas a seat base to which communication devices can beeasily attached. Used in conjunction with the appropriatehead support, communication for those using augmentativedevices is simpler than ever.As with pelvic stability, the ability of the trunk and headsupports to provide a secure position is central to sustainingoptimum posture for function. With cushioning and trunksupports made from soft, comfortable materials, the MygoSeating System ensures that trunk and head stability andcomfort are perfectly combined for maximum function. All Leckey Hi-low bases come with tilt-in-space as standardand can be used to further align the trunk, shoulder andhead over the pelvis, or simply allow a change of positionfor pressure relief and comfort. In addition to the Hi-lowchassis, height adjustable arm rests, and cushioned activitytray ensure playing and feeding can be encouraged athome or at school.

Posture, Function & ComfortLeg and Foot PositioningThe Mygo Seating System’s lower leg supportsfollow the leg guides when they move intoadduction or abduction, ensuring the footplatesremain in position below the knees.Seating systems also need to provide appropriate leg and foot support as this playsa crucial role in maintaining the stability of the pelvis, and therefore the alignmentof the trunk and head. Often overlooked, hamstrings are frequently tight in thosewith limited movement and can disturb pelvic stability. In addition, the feet takeup to 19% of body weight, and when unsupported can add to pressure and pelvicstability issues. The Mygo Seating System’s pioneering leg and foot supports enablethe child’s legs and feet to be supported in a wide range of positions. The footplates can remain in position when theleg guides are extended, allowing the feet to bepositioned behind the knees. This alleviates thestrain on tight hamstrings which would otherwisepull the pelvis into posterior tilt, and affect trunkand head positioning.POSTURELEG AND FOOT POSITIONING CHALLENGESFootplates can also be adjusted into plantar ordorsiflexion, and with the addition of sandals, can accommodate foot rotation. If sandals aretoo restrictive, ankle huggers can be attacheddirectly to the foot plates for foot positioning.Windsweeping Real leg length discrepancy Apparent leg lengthdiscrepancy caused byfixed pelvic rotationTight hamstringsLEG GUIDES AND FOOT SUPPORTSThe Mygo Seating System has innovatively designedleg guides which can be independently adjustedto accommodate 10º of windsweeping to the leftor right on the smaller seat base and 30º on thelarger base. The leg guides can also accommodateadduction and abduction. Offsetting the hipguides to the left or right gives additional space toaccommodate a more extreme windsweeping. The Mygo Seating System’s leg guides adjustindependently to accommodate leg lengthdiscrepancy caused either by varying femur lengths,or a pelvic rotation presenting as an apparent leglength discrepancy.FUNCTION & COMFORTWhen legs and feet are appropriately accommodatedto allow the pelvis to remain stable, trunk and headalignment can be more easily sustained because theuser’s weight is evenly distributed across the seat surfaces. In turn, when the body is well supported, it maximisesthe potential for upper limb function for playing, feeding etc; improves opportunities for social interaction;and maximises breathing and digestive capacity.Comfort is not just achieved through cushioning, but through matching the individual’s bodymeasurements and angles to the seating system.Accommodating the position of the legs and feetwill add to the comfort, and therefore the functionalabilities of the user.
