Data SheetProduct NameProduct CodeIssued:23-Oct-2009MPG - IndustrialU1511Product CategoryPropylene oxide and derivativesCAS Registry Number 57-55-6EINECS Number 200-338-0Synonym(s)DescriptionMonopropylene glycol-Industrial; 1,2-dihydroxypropane;1,2-propanediol;1,2-propylene glycol; HO-CH2-CH2(OH)-CH3MPG-Industrial is a high purity grade of monopropylene glycol (MPG). It is aclear, colourless and practically odourless, hygroscopic liquid, completelysoluble in water.MPG-Industrial is miscible in all proportions with low molecular weightaliphatic alcohols and ketones. It is slightly to moderately soluble in aromatichydrocarbon solvents, and only slightly miscible with aliphatic hydrocarbonsolvents.MPG-Industrial, as produced, meets the volatile organic compound (VOC)exemption criteria and definition of LVP-VOC as established in CARB'sConsumer Products Regulation; in the USEPA's National Volatile OrganicCompound Emissions Standards for Consumer Products; and in the Model Rulefor Consumer Products as adopted by the Ozone Transport Commission(OTC). Due to their low volatility and photochemical reactivity, theseLVP-VOCs are fully exempt and non-reportable VOCs in calculations of theVOC contents of regulated consumer product categories.Sales SpecificationPropertyUnitMinMaxMethodAppearance Clear & Free From Suspended Matter LPM 5037 (1)Purity %m/m 99.5 ASTM E202Water %m/m 0.2 ASTM E202Acidity as Acetic acid %m/m 0.005 ASTM E202Specific Gravity @20°C 1.0375 1.0390 ASTM E202 (1)Specific Gravity @25°C 1.035 1.037 USP (1)Color Pt-Co 10 ASTM E202Chlorides (as Cl) mg/kg 1 USPIron mg/kg 1 ASTM E202(1) Agreed Specification limits - no results reported

Such methods have been validatedand can be obtained through your local Shell Chemicals company.ApplicationsStorage andHandlingMPG-Industrial find its major application as a building block in unsaturatedpolyester resins. Other major applications are as a component in heat transferliquids, de-icers for aircraft, grinding aids in cement industry, and intermediates forchemical products like propylene glycol based ethers, surfactants and plasticisers.MPG-Industrial is slightly hygroscopic and must be stored under such conditions thatcontamination with water and absorption of moisture are prevented.Storage of MPG-Industrial at ambient temperature will not create hazardousconditions. For quality reasons the storage temperature should not exceed 40°C.Under freezing conditions the product viscosity may become too high to be pumped.MPG-Industrial is a stable product. It is not expected to deteriorate significantlyprovided it is stored as indicated. As a good industrial practice, however, a storageperiod no longer than 6 months is recommended.BulkTanks should be of stainless or mild steel, free of mill-scale or rust, and maintainedin a rust-free condition. The tank may be lined with an epoxy or phenolic resin paintthat is approved for this service.

Small tanks must be fitted with silica gel breathers, that are inspected andregenerated at regular intervals.Large tanks (>300m3) should be fitted for blanketing with dry nitrogen. If heating of the product is it necessary the heating coil skin temperature must notexceed 40°C.Lines should be of stainless or mild steel, and maintained in a rust-free condition.Hoses should be of propylene or stainless steel, and labelled "Propylene glycolonly".DrumsMPG-Industrial should be stored in dry conditions, away from direct heat sources, and preferably in the original containers. Opened drum must be closed tightlyimmediately after use.For further advice on Storage and Handling please refer to the Material Safety DataSheet on www.shell.com/chemicals.HazardInformationWarrantyFor detailed Hazard Information please refer to the Material Safety Data Sheet onwww.shell.com/chemicals.All products purchased or supplied by Shell Chemicals are subject to terms andconditions set out in the contract, order acknowledgment and/or bill of lading.
