NEWSHWA RANG WARRIORSBy Mr Norman Ng, IV dan, Pioneer of Taekwon-Do in New ZealandThe Hwarang Warriors can be comparedto the Japanese Samari, and were highlytrained martial artists. There are stories ofthe Hwarang warrior being able to kill hisopponent in horseback with devastatingflying kicks. The red belt pattern is namedafter these warriors and part of ourtradition, and even the tenets of Taekwon-Do can be traced back to the Hwarang. We all know that Hwarangs (establishedin 576 AD) were the Silla warriors. Out ofthe three kingdoms, Silla was the smallestand had always been bullied by its biggerneighbours, Baekje and Koguryo. It was Silla that conquered its neighbouringstates and unified the Korean peninsula. How did this happen? In the mid 600’s AD, Baekje and Koguryoharassed Silla’s western and northernborder. Silla, under King Muyeol, formed analliance with the emperor of Tang DynastyChina, who sent a large fleet across theYellow Sea landing 130,000 troops onthe west coast of Baekje. Meanwhile Sillasent 50,000 troops across Baekje’s easternborder under the command of GeneralKim Yoosin. Under attacks from both sides,Baekje’s capital fell under the combinedforces of China and Silla. After the conquest of Baekje in 660, theChinese and Silla forces with 350,000troops tried to invade Koguryo over aperiod of eight years. It was because ofthe chaotic internal struggle for powerbetween its princes that led to the downfallof Koguryo. At this time, there was a changing of theguard in Tang Dynasty China and EmpressWu ascended the throne. She beganlooking to use her resource for otherpriorities and the occupation of the KoreanPeninsula was draining China’s resource.During this period of weakened resolveby China, Silla formed a coalition of thedefeated Baekje and Koguryo armies anddrove the Chinese troops out of Baekjeand eventually out of the Korean Peninsula, which was unified under ‘Unified Silla’ in676 AD (today’s North and South Korea). However the Chinese language and cultureretained an influence in the daily life ofthe Korean people for many centuriesafterwards.TAEKWON-DOPoem By Aimee BebbingtonA fine art of strength and power,Taekwon-Do stands as strong as a tower,Years of conflict fill its past,Power is in striking arm,And of the art there is no qualm,The greatest prize is to hone one’s mind,But we can rest assured they will be the last.Calm descends before foot breaks board,For stores of knowledge we do not hoard,Towards the sky the tree now grows,Reaching towards wisdom, away from fear’sthroes,And meet many others of the same kind. Now red is the belt,And danger is felt,For all are focused on attack,And now reach to gaining the belt of black. This was written for me by my 13 yearold daughter Aimee, one week after myBB Grading, for Mother’s Day. Aimeedoesn’t do Taekwon-Do but obviouslyhas been on the journey with meobserving from the sidelines!Mrs Jackie BebbingtonISSUE TWO, 2012 2 17
