NEWSFROM THE PRESIDENTMaster Evan DavidsonVII Dan, PresidentWhat a great result for our <strong>New</strong> <strong>Zealand</strong> <strong>Taekwon</strong>-Domembers who attended the ITF World Cup in Brighton, England.Medals won by those attending: 18 Gold, 15 Silver and 12Bronze. This is really a fantastic achievement. Congratulations toall the team members, the coaches and managers as well as to our <strong>New</strong> Zealan<strong>do</strong>fficials and supporters who made the trip. You certainly showed <strong>New</strong> <strong>Zealand</strong>is up there with the best and keeps us at the forefront <strong>of</strong> <strong>International</strong> <strong>Taekwon</strong>-Do throughout the world.Thanks to our CEO Mr Mike Thompson who managed to gain some funding toassist our NZ umpires/<strong>of</strong>ficials get to the competition. The umpires who attendedwere certainly up with the best from overseas.Those <strong>of</strong> you who travelled to Brighton would have seen the new ‘Co-Branding’and Logo being publicised and used by the ITF. What effect this will have on us‘<strong>do</strong>wn under’ is something that our board and management will be discussingprior to any form <strong>of</strong> implementation. My understanding <strong>of</strong> the reason for this‘Co-Branding’ is to show some difference between the ITF that we affiliate to, andthe other international organisations who promote General Choi’s <strong>Taekwon</strong>-Do.E.g. the North Korean Group and those associated with General Choi’s son, GMChoi Jung Hwa.I would also like to thank the Central District region for hosting the 2012 NationalChampionships in Palmerston North. This was held at the venue where the 1stITFNZ Champs were held in 1981. A handful <strong>of</strong> attendees at this competitionwere also there at the 1st event. (Guess who) Well <strong>do</strong>ne to Ronan Gallagher-Forbes who, at 18 years old, took on the organiser’s role and ensured everythingran smoothly, which also included the awards dinner and ceremony.Lastly I really need to once again acknowledge and thank the great number <strong>of</strong>volunteers that we have in this organisation. From instructors, administrators, ourBoard <strong>of</strong> Directors, to team managers, coaches, and the families who supporttheir <strong>Taekwon</strong>-Do students and clubs. Without your continued dedication andsupport our organisation would not be where it is today. If you can perform a flyingkick like this as a 9th gup, imagine whatwill be possible in a few years at 1st Dan!One <strong>of</strong> the best things about kids campsis that ordinary training sessions turn intosomething out <strong>of</strong> the ordinary : this waspart <strong>of</strong> the sparring session taking by MrOgy KabzamalavThe patterns session taken by Mr RyanMcNie and Mrs Sonya Robinson somehowinvolved <strong>do</strong>ing patterns on your knees! Andthere was a bum-shuffling competition inthe Games session taken by Miss KarenDavey and Mrs Liz Tee. TKD but not aswe know it!Mr Konia did the unthinkable in his selfdefence session – he had them attackingeach other with sticks!The highlight for many <strong>of</strong> the kids was thebreaking session taken on Sunday by WorldChampion Kirsty Leong. And for somereason they all really loved <strong>do</strong>ing elbowstrikes. Many boards were broken -withsmiles everywhere.Thanks to everyone involved in making thecamp happen, from ITKD who providedsome funding to subsidise the cost, theblack belts who instructed, the parents whoworked tirelessly in the kitchen, Mr Gudselland Mr Styles who organised it and to Epicand Top Pro who <strong>do</strong>nated prizes to giveout to outstanding students in each sessionand best overall students too.ISSUE TWO, 2012 11


NEWSGETTING BACK INTO ITBy Rebekha Upston, I gup, RTR Hawkes Bay“There was this show at school today Mum, they did lots <strong>of</strong> jumping and kicking,they were wearing these white costumes and breaking stuff and I think it’s likeKarate or something but it looks so cool and I want to…. please Mum can Igo on Wednesday night to <strong>do</strong> it? Please?”This is what my then eight year olddaughter, Cayla, blurted at me as soon asshe got in the car after school one day.Little did I know this was to be the start<strong>of</strong> my return to <strong>Taekwon</strong>-Do. Here I was,seven and a half months pregnant withmy third child, a four year old in tow and avery excited yet nervous daughter goingto her first lesson.“I used to <strong>do</strong> <strong>Taekwon</strong>-Do when I just wasa few years older than you are and I lovedit so much,” I shared with her.I was hooked. So in just only eight weeksafter giving birth to Hayley I found myselfparticipating in my first TKD classes that Ihad been in for 16 years and it felt great,like I had never left.I admit, initially I was a little bit apprehensiveabout taking it up again and it did requiresome serious thought. There <strong>of</strong> course wasthe battle within… Would I still be able to<strong>do</strong> it? Would my girls mind if I trained withthem? How would people feel about mereturning at my grade after such a longlength <strong>of</strong> time away? How can I train with anew born baby? I mean, I am not a flexibleteenager anymore. Maybe I shouldn’t andjust let bygones be bygones. After all I’vejust had a baby; I’m very unfit and not inshape by any stretch <strong>of</strong> the imagination.Then there was the big one, I will have toeventually grade for my black belt!I had to look at things from a differentperspective. It’s an excellent way to getfit and back into shape. It’s a great wayto spend time with my girls and be moreinvolved with their activities. What aboutOn that first night at the RTR Napier clubthe beginners, which included my daughter,gathered at one end <strong>of</strong> the hall. They werefumbling their way through punching an<strong>do</strong>ther fundamental techniques. While Ijust sat on the side smiling proudly at mydaughter, my attention was suddenly drawnto the red belt practising Hwa-Rang. I wassurprised to realise that I could actuallyremember all <strong>of</strong> that. This used to be myfavourite pattern! Then a black belt, whom Ivaguely recognised, walked past. He and thered belt began another Pattern - Choong-Moo. It dawned on me then that this wasthe same TKD I had practised all thoseyears ago.Cayla then proudly shared with herinstructors, “Master Rocky and Mrs R, mymum used to <strong>do</strong> TKD and she was a blackstripe!”Then the chit-chat began.“Really! So when are you due?” theyenquired.“Six weeks’ time,” I answered.“So then, in seven you’ll be on the floor!”Skipping forward in time 12 weeks, I waswith my beautiful 8lb 12 oz baby girl andmy four year old Nicole trundling our wayto the Mini-kids’ classes. However, thistime I find myself before the next classrunning them through Saju Makgi, SajuJirugi and Chon-Ji right alongside MasterRounthwaite! The following week it wasDan-Gun and Do-San. That was all it took,12TAEKWON-DO TALK MAGAZINE


NEWSthe baby? Ahhh, I’ll just wing it with herand see what happens. Then as it turne<strong>do</strong>ut, Hayley loved being in the <strong>do</strong>jang. Shehas her own corner where the portacotis set up for her to sit in and watch us. Ifshe becomes restless or upset she hasplenty <strong>of</strong> people willing to pick her up togive her a cuddle. She wanders around;tugs on belts if she wants to be picked upand at times goes around and collects allthe drink bottles up. The students enjoyhaving her around and I feel it is goodfor her development to be in that kind <strong>of</strong>environment. Her latest thing is when theclass kihaps (shouts), she just yells back atthem! There was nothing to be concernedabout after all.Being post-baby and training, I also foundit a struggle with the fitness side <strong>of</strong> thingsand didn’t have the energy to cope. I hadto start tweaking what I was eating at homeby adding more protein and fresh foodsin order to cope with the muscle repair.I had to increase my calorie intake for Iwas still nursing Hayley and was hopingto <strong>do</strong> so until she was 12 months old. Fora while I stressed myself out about losingall the baby weight, and about getting fitstraight away. So much so, I was obsessivelywatching what I ate. Initially I thought it wasgreat, as I had lost three kilograms in twoweeks but I was exhausted to the point<strong>of</strong> falling asleep by six o’clock. This wasnot an ideal situation, with three hungry,demanding kids requiring my attention!Hayley then became even more unsettledat night, which then in turn made meeven more tired. It took a while untilI finally realised that I wasn’t eatingenough for the both <strong>of</strong> us. I relaxed alittle, did some research and discoveredthat a breastfeeding mother requires anadditional 2500 kilojoules or 600 caloriesa day. I loosened the reins, increasedmy calorie intake and eventually founda balance. She is now 14 months oldand I have lost about 26 kilograms sincehaving her and 18 kilos <strong>of</strong> that amountsince I had started <strong>Taekwon</strong>-Do. The lastthree kilos, my ideal weight, seems to likehanging around and in no hurry to leave mywaistline, but at this stage in the quest formy black belt I am not too worried at all. Iam sure it will start to go as I have stoppedbreast feeding and training full steam aheadfor a December 2012 Black Belt grading.It has also helped now that my husbandhas stopped working his unsociable hours.His reply to that was that is there nothingstopping me from getting up at four am togo for a run - yeah right! All I have to <strong>do</strong>now is just remember to stop eating thoseextra 600 calories!Time has definitely flown by and a lot <strong>of</strong>progress has been made in my training.Recently my daughter and I even entered acouple <strong>of</strong> tournaments. One <strong>of</strong> them beingin Palmerston North which was my first in17 years! I was extremely nervous aboutthe whole event. Even to the point that Ihad convinced myself that I shouldn’t bethere and that I was by no means ready. Iwas going to be sparring against black beltsand black belts who have represented <strong>New</strong><strong>Zealand</strong> on an international level! At first Iwanted to leave but after I had completedthe patterns section and achieved a bronzemedal I managed to calm myself <strong>do</strong>wn andsettle a bit. In hindsight <strong>of</strong> course, I realisedthere was no reason to have felt like thatbut it was just purely nerves and lack <strong>of</strong>self-confidence getting the better <strong>of</strong> me.The atmosphere that day was amazing, thepeople very friendly, supportive, and full <strong>of</strong>great advice. My daughter Michaella evenwon a gold medal in sparring. I am so veryproud <strong>of</strong> her.The most recent tournament I enteredwas the Central Districts Regionals, hel<strong>do</strong>n my home turf, Hawkes Bay. It was at thistournament that I could tell there was adefinite improvement in my performance.I was more confident and settled withmy patterns and yes, there was room forimprovement in my technique. So this,along with developing my sparring skills, aremy main areas requiring development formy December grading, but I am definitelyfeeling as though my skills are steadilyimproving and that I will remain “on trackfor black”.This journey <strong>of</strong> returning to TKD, after abreak <strong>of</strong> several years, has not been oneexperienced only by myself. There is asmall group <strong>of</strong> guys in the Hawke’s Baywho have banded together and we haveall developed a strong sense <strong>of</strong> friendship.I have appreciated this so much. We arecurrently all hoping to grade together forour various degrees at the end <strong>of</strong> the year.It is this camaraderie that will enable me tosucceed and it is reassuring to know theyare there for me. It’s been interesting tonote our different areas <strong>of</strong> strength all helpto complement each other rather thancause us to compete against each other.While one is intuitive and natural when itcomes to self-defence, another effortlesslyperforms flying techniques. One’s forteis endurance and strength training, whileanother’s is pr<strong>of</strong>iciency in free-sparring.Admittedly their seemingly natural talents<strong>do</strong> make me a little bit envious but in theend it all helps to inspire me.Thinking back over the past 12 months andwhat I have accomplished, the new friendsI have made around the Central Districtsregion, I am filled with a sense <strong>of</strong> prideand achievement. I enjoy being an assistantinstructor and love working with the youngchildren both in the general class as wellas in the Mini-kids. I enjoy watching themgrow and succeed in their gup gradings.To see their confidence and skills developas they compete in tournaments, even tothe point <strong>of</strong> winning medals! Knowing that Ihave played a tiny part in all this is priceless.To be honest it really is quite an honour.When I have reflected back on my teenageyears over time, there has always beenthis one regret - I didn’t achieve my blackbelt. So, when I re-entered the <strong>do</strong>jang, Ithought that if I achieved black belt statusthere would definitely be a great sense <strong>of</strong>completion for me. However, I am wellaware it will only be just the beginning.“The trick is to turn them(nerves, fears, <strong>do</strong>ubts) intopositives, not to let themdistract you or decreaseyour focus. See it as a wayby which you can buildup an invisible energy inyourself which you canpour out through yourperformance. Pre-eventnerves or <strong>do</strong>ubts happento everyone. NEWSA VISIT TO THE UNITED STATESBy Dr Brice Valles, III dan, Paul M PapakuraLast May, my wife and I went to the US fora two-week vacation: one week in Houston,Texas, and one week in <strong>New</strong> York City.For the first time I decided to use thatopportunity to combine a vacation withtraining by visiting other clubs. With theapproval <strong>of</strong> my instructor, Master PaulMcPhail, I contacted Grand Master VanBinh in Houston and Master Ruben Suarezin Queens, <strong>New</strong> York. I contacted them byemail and both kindly replied by inviting meto their respective clubs. I consequentlyvisited each club twice during my stay ineach city.Grand Master Van Binh is the last personGeneral Choi Hong Hi personallypromoted to 9 th degree black belt. He isalso a 7 th degree black belt in Ju<strong>do</strong> and 5 thdegree in Aiki<strong>do</strong>. He therefore teaches aunified martial art system to his students:70% ITF TKD and 30% Ju<strong>do</strong>-Aiki<strong>do</strong>. GrandMaster Van Binh is one <strong>of</strong> the fittestpersons I have ever met, and definitelythe fittest 77-year-old man! Leading byexample he shows how, and encourageshis students to perform push-ups on toesand fingertips. He also teaches them touse a roller wheel and go from a standingposition to being extended completelyparallel to the floor and back up again. Heeasily performs more than 10 <strong>of</strong> each. Whois up to the challenge?Entrance <strong>of</strong> Van Bihn self defence academyGrand Master Van Binh’s club is part <strong>of</strong>his home. It reminded me <strong>of</strong> the originalmartial art schools in the Far East likeJapan, China, Korea where a Master hadhis school at home and all his studentslived on the premises. His club is openedfive days a week and students have theopportunity attend each session. GrandMaster Van Binh’s <strong>do</strong>jang is very spaciousand extremely well equipped. The floor isdivided into two parts, one <strong>of</strong> which hasextra padding to allow for fall practice andself defence. There is also, along one <strong>of</strong> thewalls, hand conditioning machines on whichstudents train regularly.The first time I visited the <strong>do</strong>jang, it was fulltraining, allowing me to learn new line workGift exchange after graduation at GM Van Binh’s <strong>do</strong>jangroutines including hand-kick combinations,practice my forward falls, try the rollerwheel, the deadly aforementioned pushups,and work my hands on the dallyonmachines. Grand Master Van Binh gaveme some very good tips on how to makemy own machine and how to properlycondition my hands.After training, I had the chance to talk withGrand Master Van Binh as he was willing toshare many <strong>of</strong> his experiences, life storiesand memories about General Choi HongHi. In particular I will remember his teachingme how to breathe properly in <strong>Taekwon</strong>-Do and the importance <strong>of</strong> loyalty.The second session I attended was infact a colour belt grading. Grand MasterVan Binh gave me the honour to sit at hisleft and observe the performance <strong>of</strong> hisstudents. He also asked me to participateas a sparring partner for some <strong>of</strong> hissenior students. As I said, Grand MasterVan Binh’s teaching is varied and includesJu<strong>do</strong> and Aïki<strong>do</strong> techniques, in additionto ITF <strong>Taekwon</strong>-Do, and the students areasked to display what they have learntin these other disciplines as well. You willperhaps be surprised to hear that one <strong>of</strong>the self defence techniques they practise isdisarming an attacker coming from behindholding a gun. Although not everyonepassed, all students showed good spiritand skill level. After grading, we exchangedsome gifts and then Grand Master Van Binhannounced the results (yes, the resultswere announced right after grading) foreach group one after the other. After eachgroup received their results and while stillstanding at attention, all black belts (myself14TAEKWON-DO TALK MAGAZINE


NEWSincluded) led by Grand Master Van Binhwent to shake hands with them in turn.What an experience this was!Next we went to <strong>New</strong> York. It was my firstvisit to the Big Apple. So many clichés frommovies, TV series and <strong>do</strong>cumentaries werein my mind that I was very surprised to seehow different NYC can be. For instance,skyscrapers are mostly only located in theManhattan area. If you went to Queens,for instance, (where Master Suarez’s clubis) you will mainly find low rise buildings(less than 10 stories) or individual houses.I was also amazed at the sheer size <strong>of</strong>central park (approximately 4km x 1 km);that would be an awesome place for our2.4 kms run at grading!Master Suarez’s <strong>do</strong>jang is located in theheart <strong>of</strong> Queens. The subway/train linesrun above the street on which the club issituated. The <strong>do</strong>jang is small compared towhat we are used to here in <strong>New</strong> <strong>Zealand</strong>,but I guess it is very difficult to find spacein Queens (and <strong>New</strong> York) at a not tooprohibitive cost. The <strong>do</strong>jang is perfectlyequipped: mats on the floor, mirrors onthe wall, pads, targets… It is opened everyday and is operated full time from early inthe morning to late at night. Most <strong>of</strong> thestudents I met were training every day andI can say that they were all in very goodphysical condition. Master Suarez toldme that he liked to emphasise this in hissessions. I must say that I was not preparedfor this and I had to take a breather whilethe others continued at full speed. They<strong>do</strong> not seem to take any break at all andgo from one set <strong>of</strong> exercises to anotherwithout needing to drink a little bit <strong>of</strong> water.One thing to note was that most <strong>of</strong> theteaching was <strong>do</strong>ne in Spanish – to reachthe local community that mostly comesfrom South America... they had to switchto English from time to time for my sake.Thanks guys, it helped!The warm-ups are usually led by one <strong>of</strong>the senior black belts and seem to followa routine consisting <strong>of</strong> running exercisesfollowed by series <strong>of</strong> abs (ca. 200) andtriceps push-ups (laying <strong>of</strong> the floor andpushing with the hands to lift the upperbodywhile flexing the spine, about 50times). As I said, most students <strong>do</strong> thatevery day. My first session was taught byMaster Suarez himself. His abilities areimpressive. I will definitely remember histips for properly training the waving kicksin Yoo-Sin.The second session was led by Mr. WilliamPerlaza (VI dan), coach <strong>of</strong> two-timesparring world champion Julio Carloswho is a member <strong>of</strong> the club and wasat training as well. I was able to observeMr. Perlaza training with Julio on varioussparring techniques and I am not sure I cansay who the best fighter was! This sessionwas full endurance, non-stop line work,patterns (all 18 <strong>of</strong> them for the III dans)and sparring. Not having my sparring gearwith me I chose to stretch and observewhat techniques and routines Mr. Perlazais teaching to his students.I am very grateful to all <strong>of</strong> these awesomeinstructors for having given me theopportunity to train and for sharing some<strong>of</strong> their knowledge with me during mystays. I would also like to thank all thestudents I met, both juniors and seniors,who made me feel welcome and withwhom we share the common passion<strong>of</strong> <strong>Taekwon</strong>-Do. I was duly impressed bytheir level <strong>of</strong> courtesy and discipline. Forinstance, at both clubs, after training, alljuniors (colour belts) go around to bow orshake hands with all black belts! Somethingwe all could definitely learn from.I strongly encourage any one <strong>of</strong> you whohave the opportunity to travel overseas tonot hesitate to contact clubs in the areayou will be staying at, whether it be forleisure or business. The experience andinsights in <strong>Taekwon</strong>-Do you may gain fromthis can be far above what you expect. Itwas the case for me and I will definitelyrepeat the experience in the future.Master Suarez and the authorHow to organise a visitto another clubAsk your instructor’s approval to visitother clubs during your trip.Ask your instructor if he/she alreadyknows local instructors you could contactor if he/she can introduce you to them.Nowadays, most instructors use emails.Send one to the instructors <strong>of</strong> each clubyou would like to visit. Do not forgetto use our first tenet “courtesy” whenwriting the email! Start with “Dear MasterSir “or “Dear Sabumin Sir” etc... and endwith something like “Kind regards, “ andyour full name and grade.After having received a positive replyinviting you to join them during your stay,send a reply yourself in the same way asin #3, thanking them for the invitationand looking forward to attending some<strong>of</strong> the sessions.Once you arrive at your destination, tryto locate the club before you go for yourfirst training. It might not always be easyto find! Be also aware that some clubsmay ask you to pay for training. You couldalso bring a gift; if your instructor knowsthe persons you are visiting he/she maybe able to tell you what is most properin that particular case.When you arrive for training, rememberALL what you have learnt about ethics<strong>of</strong> conduct!!! NEWSNEWLANDS INTERMEDIATE PROJECTBy Mr Terry Harkin, I dan, Spirit <strong>New</strong>landsOn Wednesday 1st April at 6pm Spirit<strong>New</strong>lands <strong>Taekwon</strong>-Do welcomed 10 newstudents to our club.This project was the culmination <strong>of</strong> a fewmonths <strong>of</strong> planning and one single day <strong>of</strong>hard work.The essence <strong>of</strong> the initiative was running sixsessions in one day, hosting all 320 studentsat <strong>New</strong>lands Intermediate School with 40minutes <strong>of</strong> fast paced and fun <strong>Taekwon</strong>-Doexercises in the school hall.The project has been successful, and theresults and templates sent to the NationalBoard with the intention <strong>of</strong> being able to beused by other clubs around <strong>New</strong> <strong>Zealand</strong>.Key features <strong>of</strong> the project: – in this case 11 and 12 year old kids.A huge thanks to Miss Carolina Dillenfor her invaluable advice in this regard. designed and delivered to the schoolassembly a few days before the sessionswere run. This presentation highlightedall <strong>of</strong> the great things about our art. targeting parents was given to allparticipating kids with instructions toreturn an insert to the school within afew days. for the event – For $90 the studentreceived:- Their <strong>do</strong>bok- White belt- Registration with the National Body- Grading Syllabus- Membership Card- First month <strong>of</strong> training by:- The National Body reducing theirfee to cover the grading syllabus andmembership card – balance <strong>of</strong> feewaived.- Agreement with Sapius on a substantialdiscount for the <strong>do</strong>bok and belts.- Good buy-in from the IntermediateTeachers – the presentation at theschool assembly was key in this regard. on the day. Club Instructor Mr BrettKraiger was ably assisted by Mrs HelenMiller, Miss Sharlene Clarke, and MrTerry Harkin. for all new students. All students whoresponded turned up at 6pm onWednesday 1st April. Time was plannedto allow the students to fit into theirnew uniforms which were delivered forthe night, and to talk with parents in agroup setting, as well as 1:1 to ensureall <strong>of</strong> their questions were answered.The project has been a success across anumber <strong>of</strong> fronts, and below some <strong>of</strong> thekey outcomes: is actually looking like a total <strong>of</strong> 15 newmembers. NEWSHWA RANG WARRIORSBy Mr Norman Ng, IV dan, Pioneer <strong>of</strong> <strong>Taekwon</strong>-Do in <strong>New</strong> <strong>Zealand</strong>The Hwarang Warriors can be comparedto the Japanese Samari, and were highlytrained martial artists. There are stories <strong>of</strong>the Hwarang warrior being able to kill hisopponent in horseback with devastatingflying kicks. The red belt pattern is namedafter these warriors and part <strong>of</strong> ourtradition, and even the tenets <strong>of</strong> <strong>Taekwon</strong>-Do can be traced back to the Hwarang.We all know that Hwarangs (establishedin 576 AD) were the Silla warriors. Out <strong>of</strong>the three king<strong>do</strong>ms, Silla was the smallestand had always been bullied by its biggerneighbours, Baekje and Koguryo.It was Silla that conquered its neighbouringstates and unified the Korean peninsula.How did this happen?In the mid 600’s AD, Baekje and Koguryoharassed Silla’s western and northernborder. Silla, under King Muyeol, formed analliance with the emperor <strong>of</strong> Tang DynastyChina, who sent a large fleet across theYellow Sea landing 130,000 troops onthe west coast <strong>of</strong> Baekje. Meanwhile Sillasent 50,000 troops across Baekje’s easternborder under the command <strong>of</strong> GeneralKim Yoosin. Under attacks from both sides,Baekje’s capital fell under the combinedforces <strong>of</strong> China and Silla.After the conquest <strong>of</strong> Baekje in 660, theChinese and Silla forces with 350,000troops tried to invade Koguryo over aperiod <strong>of</strong> eight years. It was because <strong>of</strong>the chaotic internal struggle for powerbetween its princes that led to the <strong>do</strong>wnfall<strong>of</strong> Koguryo.At this time, there was a changing <strong>of</strong> theguard in Tang Dynasty China and EmpressWu ascended the throne. FEATURETHE ITF WORLD CUPby Mr Dane Canton III dan, Southern Cross <strong>Taekwon</strong>-Do AcademyIn early October, England played host to the 4th ITF World Cup, held every twoyears. This is the biggest international event, in terms <strong>of</strong> competitor numberson the ITF calendar and this time it was the UK’s turn to host the event.The tournament took place in Brighton,which is just south <strong>of</strong> Lon<strong>do</strong>n andsometimes affectionately known as “LittleLon<strong>do</strong>n”. The city is on the coast and looksdirectly across the English Channel. Thehistoric buildings and stone beaches makeBrighton a real tourist spot. Unfortunately,the weather was not the greatest duringthe competition, although, with the smallpatches <strong>of</strong> good weather we did have, it’seasy to see why Brighton is an amazingdestination.The <strong>New</strong> <strong>Zealand</strong> contingent dripped intoBrighton, bit by bit. Although the bulk <strong>of</strong> theteam travelled together, some made theirown arrangements so they could see some<strong>of</strong> Europe (and in Mr Doogan’s case, HongKong) before the tournament began. Oncethe tournament rolled around however, the<strong>New</strong> <strong>Zealand</strong> team was all together andlooking much more like a national team. Itwas surprising how quickly the team bondsformed, especially as we had people fromall over <strong>New</strong> <strong>Zealand</strong>, who <strong>do</strong>n’t get totrain with each other on a regular basis. Itreally shows the strong foundations an<strong>do</strong>rganisation in <strong>New</strong> <strong>Zealand</strong> <strong>Taekwon</strong>-Dothat allows those team bonds to form soquickly.Just to save some confusion, the rulesfor a World Cup are a little bit differentto a World Championships. At a WorldChampionships, each country can only sen<strong>do</strong>ne team, there are limits to the number<strong>of</strong> entries per division and it is restrictedto black belts. At a World Cup, there areno limits to how many competitors eachcountry can send per division and thecompetition is open to blue belts andabove. Needless to say, this makes for anincredibly large tournament. In total, therewere 1557 competitors, 383 coaches and493 supporters. A tournament <strong>of</strong> thismagnitude requires a lot <strong>of</strong> manpowerto run. Between the 83 umpires and 75<strong>of</strong>ficials, they got the job <strong>do</strong>ne.The competition itself took place overfour days; Thursday to Sunday. In thedays leading up, all competitors had toregister and weigh in, so the tournamentcould start at 8:30 am, sharp, on Thursdaymorning. At 9 am the <strong>do</strong>ors were openand everyone was allowed into the building.Once inside, competitors were given ashort time to organise themselves forthe opening ceremony. For the ceremony,each organisation elected two membersto represent them in the opening paradeand the two selected for <strong>New</strong> <strong>Zealand</strong>were <strong>Niketa</strong> <strong>Wells</strong> and Jamie Searle. Theopening ceremony also featured a displayfrom the local town crier, bellowing out awelcome, and a speech from the Mayor <strong>of</strong>Brighton and Hove. This took place underthe watchful eyes <strong>of</strong> ITF president, GrandMaster Pablo Trajtenberg, and many <strong>of</strong> ourorganisation’s ninth degrees.As soon as the opening ceremony hadconcluded, the competition began. Havingfinished first overall at World Champs, lastyear, <strong>New</strong> <strong>Zealand</strong> was put under a lot <strong>of</strong>pressure to live up to its reputation. Fromthe very first match, the <strong>New</strong> <strong>Zealand</strong>competitors stood fast and competedextremely well. The structure <strong>of</strong> thetournament was that the preliminaryrounds would be completed on Thursdayand Friday, leaving Saturday free for thefinals <strong>of</strong> the individual competition andSunday was for team events.After the first day, many <strong>New</strong> <strong>Zealand</strong>ershad made their respective finals andmany were eliminated, some due to verycontroversial decisions. When a GrandMaster cannot understand some <strong>of</strong> thejudges’ decisions, it feels okay to consideryourself unlucky.When Saturday finally came around, much<strong>of</strong> the <strong>New</strong> <strong>Zealand</strong> team was still requiredto wear a <strong>do</strong>bok. It was fantastic to seethat so many <strong>New</strong> <strong>Zealand</strong>ers had madetheir finals and seeing them compete atthe highest level <strong>of</strong> the highest competitionwas truly inspirational. This was the first time this kind <strong>of</strong>event has taken place in <strong>Taekwon</strong>-Do. Thefinals <strong>of</strong> the so-called “glamour events”were displayed. The arena was rearrangedand an elevated stage was installed. Thegrand masters had ringside seats andeveryone else watched on from thestands. The houselights were extinguishedand spotlights were placed on the mainstage. It felt like an international boxingevent, complete with the competitorsentering the ring to music. The eventwas recorded with television qualitycameras and compiled onto a DVD. <strong>New</strong><strong>Zealand</strong> participated in two events duringthe finals night, with Miss Estelle Speirscompeting in sparring and Messrs MarkTrotter and Carl Van Roon competing inpre-arranged sparring. This night was madeeven sweeter when the kiwis won gold inboth categories!Sunday’s team events showed stiffcompetition for <strong>New</strong> <strong>Zealand</strong>. Despiteeverything, <strong>New</strong> <strong>Zealand</strong> managed to winsilver in senior female coloured belt teamsparring and in pre-junior black belt teamsparring. The senior female black belts alsoperformed spectacularly well and wonbronze in team patterns.Overall, our tiny country did fantasticallywell. <strong>New</strong> <strong>Zealand</strong> has been fiercecompetition in patterns for the better part<strong>of</strong> the last decade. This showed throughwith the strong performances from allpatterns competitors. <strong>New</strong> <strong>Zealand</strong>’sreputation as a world power in this fieldwas truly maintained. In fact, 44% <strong>of</strong> ourgold medals were from patterns, so wedid not disappoint.Where <strong>New</strong> <strong>Zealand</strong> really proveditself this year was in its sparring effort.Apart from a few stellar performances inprevious international competitions, <strong>New</strong><strong>Zealand</strong> has been unable to <strong>do</strong>minatein the event. This year <strong>New</strong> <strong>Zealand</strong>earned 13 medals in sparring, with six <strong>of</strong>them being gold! Although unsurprising,considering the amount <strong>of</strong> training thatour competitors have been <strong>do</strong>ing, this isa fantastic achievement and this figure willonly continue to improve.To the results then! <strong>New</strong> <strong>Zealand</strong> finishedsecond overall with 18 golds, 15 silvers and12 bronze medals.The best overall organisation title wentto the Irish <strong>Taekwon</strong>-Do Association andFetra, from Argentina, rounded out thetop three.Finishing second overall is an incredibleachievement for <strong>New</strong> <strong>Zealand</strong>,considering we had 54 competitors fromour organisation, while Fetra had 94competitors and the Irish <strong>Taekwon</strong>-DoAssociation had a whopping 142! FEATURETHE 2012 WORLD CUP...BEHIND THE DECISIONSby Mr Gwyn Brown IV dan, Tournament Advisor Group1500-plus entrants. Four days <strong>of</strong>competition in 10 rings with only 83umpires. Wow!This was my first World Cup. I considermyself to be a reasonably experience<strong>do</strong>fficial, but outside <strong>of</strong> NZ, well, I was justthe same as everyone else...nervous!Travelling to Brighton with the NZ Teamwas fantastic. After 32 hours <strong>of</strong> flying,airport lounges, and prepared mircowavedfood it was a relief to finally arrive at theOld Ship Hotel, the team’s accommodationfor the tournament. Straight away thoughI had to transfer to the <strong>of</strong>ficials’ hotel,and not stay with the team before thecompetition started as planned. Was a bitdisappointed about that, but I guess thingshave to be <strong>do</strong>ne properly right from thebeginning. Oh well, the two km walk wasjust what the <strong>do</strong>ctor ordered after all thatsitting around anyway (yes I could havetaken a taxi, but the kind receptionist atthe hotel told me it was just <strong>do</strong>wn theroad, which I fell for...Brighton 1, Brown 0 ).For some reason they stuck we <strong>of</strong>ficialswell away from the venue when we couldhave stayed next <strong>do</strong>or, like the NZ teamdid. We (Master Rimmer and myself) putit <strong>do</strong>wn to luck or good management onthe team’s part. I like to think it was goodmanagement personally; luck’s never reallya part <strong>of</strong> the equation with Afi.After two days getting over the jet-lag andsightseeing, which included a day in Lon<strong>do</strong>n,as you <strong>do</strong>, the tournament for me finallyarrived early Wednesday morning with the<strong>of</strong>ficials’ meeting. Master Katz took controlfrom the beginning and along with MasterOtterson laid out our four days for us veryclearly with his statement “are you readyfor the tsunami”?Our very own Mr Banicevich – Jury President, Center Referee and JudgeThe meeting went quickly and the NZ<strong>of</strong>ficials were all aware <strong>of</strong> what we hadto <strong>do</strong>. There was an enormous range <strong>of</strong><strong>of</strong>ficials represented, from just about allthe countries involved, and at all levels <strong>of</strong>experience and attitude too.Thursday morning arrived just as quickly,and we were assigned our rings for theday. I was assigned to a patterns ring as ajudge, and because <strong>of</strong> the small number<strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong>ficials, we got the feeling we wouldbe worked pretty hard. There were to bejust seven <strong>of</strong>ficials per ring for patterns:five Judges, one Jury President, and onlyone <strong>of</strong>ficial to tick names <strong>of</strong>f, line them up,and keep them coming in to the ring onthe right side each time (no dedicated ringmarshals as such, even Masters were <strong>do</strong>ingthis job). The sparring rings on the first dayhad one extra <strong>of</strong>ficial...luxury!The first day I was in ring 5. Ring 5 wasassigned the largest divisions...yep...One designated pattern only forpreliminaries meant slightly less than 1.5minutes on the floor for our divisions.Master Katz allowed a generous twominutes to conduct each bout. Should be apiece <strong>of</strong> cake. I think he jinxed us by sayingwe would be fine so long as “Mr Murphy”left us alone. He didn’t. We were an hourlate in starting due to the computer systembreaking <strong>do</strong>wn three times and our drawnot arriving on time. It was looking morelike a 9 pm finish rather than the 7 pm onewe were told. Oh well, I’m at the WorldCup; could be worse!We finally got under way, due to thecombined efforts <strong>of</strong> all the ITF Ring Counciltrying to fix the system, and then themadness started.The two divisions in ring 5for the first day: Black BeltFemales, 18-35 years old,I dans. There were 103 <strong>of</strong>them. Black Belt Males, 18-35years old, I dans. There were120 something...(I lost track<strong>of</strong> the numbers in the maledivision, but I know it was 120something).Guess who got asked to startthe ring marshalling? Wow,talk about busy. With theThe author and ITF Umpire, Mr Gwyn Browncompetitors <strong>do</strong>ing about a minute on thefloor minus the walk on and the results,it didn’t leave much time to find the nextones, collect their ID cards, get the cards tothe Jury President and line them up at thering. I had them 4-deep lined up outsidethe ring, which was as much room as Ihad to work with...let’s not talk about thelanguage barrier and Argentine coacheswho seemed to think they were moreimportant than anyone else. I did meet anexcellent Norwegian coach though (stillcan’t pronounce his name), who spent a lot<strong>of</strong> time in ring 5, while not openly laughing,at least appreciating the work. Thanks mate!It was great to swap out for the afternoonwith one <strong>of</strong> the other judges and sit <strong>do</strong>wnto score patterns. Even though all patternsbelow Yul Gok were removed, I think Inow know the remainder in a way I neverthought possible! And sitting at the worldcup, scoring patterns, what a buzz!Despite the late start, we still managedto finish at 7 pm, getting faster and fasterwith getting the competitors in and out.7am start, 7 pm finish...long day, big tsunami.Day 2 was exactly the same, but different...same competitors, but sparring. I waschanged to ring 3 as I had asked MasterOtterson if I could referee. I figured if you<strong>do</strong>n’t ask, you <strong>do</strong>n’t get, right? FEATUREMaster Garnez, in charge <strong>of</strong> ring 3, let mein the ring in the afternoon after beingassigned as a corner judge, so I got toreferee at my first <strong>International</strong> event,a humbling experience. Master Rimmerwas with me for the next three days aswell, helping me get sorted. He ref-ed andjudged for four days solid. Ring 3 finishedat 8.30 pm, after a 7.30 am start...awesome!Each morning we had a meeting at 7.30am,where we went over the previous day’sevents, talked about contact, procedures,and assigned any new ring council changesetc. Master Katz wasright for the first twodays; a tsunami was anunderstatement.The third day saw us<strong>do</strong>wn to just seven ringsto cope with the semisand finals for most <strong>of</strong> theevents and we finished at1pm and were allowedto relax for five hoursbefore coming back thatnight to <strong>do</strong> the finals.Master Rimmer wasselected to representNZ, only one <strong>of</strong>ficial fromeach country for the finals in ring 1 andnot every country represented. Quite anhonour.The last day was back in tsunami territoryagain, with nothing but team events all day.Master Garnez allowed me back in the ringto ref, so I guess I passed the test. But firstup for me was Poland vs Argentina, male18-35. If you’re going to be baptised, itmight as well be by fire I say. And the matchresulted in a draw so extra rounds as well,lost a bit <strong>of</strong> sweat that round.Fortunately for us, there were threereferees in our ring for sparring. Eachreferee was only allowed to <strong>do</strong> twomatches in a row for individual sparring,so we swapped a lot making sure we eachdidn’t ref our own countries. For teamevents, the same referee had to <strong>do</strong> all thebouts for that round, no matter how manythere were, and again we weren’t allowedto referee our own countries. On thebright side, an extra <strong>of</strong>ficial for each ring,when we ran with the 10, rings made allthe difference.Sunday saw us finish as the last ringstanding. All the others had packed uparound us an hour previously, but we keptgetting the overspill. The finals for teamsparring were run in ring 1, and as quicklyas it started, it was all over apart from thehandshaking and beer drinking.What a massive four days; so manyhighlights. I got to watch some extremepatterns and sparring and saw quite afew competitors disqualified for excessivecontact which we had been told, in nouncertain terms, to be very hard on byMaster Katz. Well overdue.I also watched in disgustas three coaches in myring alone were ordere<strong>do</strong>ut due to bad behaviour.Unbelievable. But in the end,what an amazing experience.NZ is truly a world powerin TKD; you can’t argue withcoming second overall atsuch a massive event. Beatenonly by the Irish, who weresuperb with their twice-the-size team, andwho only travelled across the ditch too!Being an <strong>of</strong>ficial at the world cup this yearwas also very timely, as NZ is a<strong>do</strong>pting theITF rules for next year. There will be a lot<strong>of</strong> changes coming soon and new coursesnext year to train everyone up; so keep aneye on the calendar. But they will only begood for our organisation as a whole. Ourstandard has lifted so much in the last fiveyears, and a lot <strong>of</strong> that can be attributedto attending events like the World Cup. FEATURENIKETA WELLS – UNLIKELY STAR OF THE ITF WORLD CUPBy Master Paul McPhail VII danAfter the Gold Medal was put around her neck, <strong>New</strong> <strong>Zealand</strong>Coach Mr Steve Pellow was invited to explain to the entirearena what a remarkable story had just taken place.He explained that only months earlier <strong>Niketa</strong> was wheelchair bound,unable to walk or even stand. What transpired over the months leading upto the World Cup would (and should) make a great movie. She was going tothe World Cup no matter what. And she ended up winning it!<strong>Niketa</strong> <strong>Wells</strong> is a remarkable girl.In 2011 <strong>Niketa</strong> was struck <strong>do</strong>wn withReflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (RSD),now more commonly known as ComplexRegional Pain Syndrome (CRPS). By theend <strong>of</strong> 2011 she was unable to walk,confined to a wheelchair and in constantpain. <strong>New</strong> <strong>Zealand</strong>’s leading pain specialisttold her to forget about using her feetever again.<strong>Niketa</strong> is a 1st gup at Paul M Papakura,former student <strong>of</strong> Mr Phil Dunn at Waiuku,and before that with Dan Jackson at Paul MWaiau Pa. She competed for <strong>New</strong> <strong>Zealand</strong>in Australia just prior to being struck <strong>do</strong>wnwith RSD, and had <strong>do</strong>ne well at manyRegional and National events.It was through her incredible mentaltoughness and perseverance, that shewas able to beat the condition, return totraining, and ultimately take Gold at the ITFWorld Cup in Brighton. By the time youread this, she would have tested for her 1stdegree black belt.<strong>Niketa</strong> was in a bad way by the end <strong>of</strong>2011. I recall seeing her and her Mum at ashopping centre just before Christmas andI could see the immense stress and worryin her Mum’s eyes. <strong>Niketa</strong> was in her wheelchair – still perky and happy. I vowed thento try and <strong>do</strong> more to help.We started private sessions early 2012and it was great to see she had seen someimprovement from December. She hadeven managed to attend some holidaytraining sessions on her crutches. Becausethe pain was now mainly in her lower limbs,she could actually <strong>do</strong> much <strong>of</strong> the session,including patterns by using her crutchesand also <strong>do</strong>wn on her knees. This would bequite painful at times and also must havetaken a lot <strong>of</strong> courage. This is how she alsoattended our National Camp in March thisyear (see photo in last issue <strong>of</strong> TKD Talk).Our weekend sessions were <strong>do</strong>ne at myhome with no spectators. Even <strong>Niketa</strong>’sMum or Dad were sent <strong>of</strong>f to the localcafe for an hour while we trained. This is the<strong>Niketa</strong> wanted it and worked well.From talking to her parents I was interested(and dismayed) to note that her specialistsContinued from page 1:From then on, <strong>Niketa</strong> loss theuse <strong>of</strong> her legs. Walking was nota possibility due to the pain andshe spent weeks at home, undergoingphysiotherapy fromher wheelchair. During thistime, they were told during on<strong>of</strong> the many visits to the <strong>do</strong>ctorthat the family were told to preparefor the worst, which was<strong>Niketa</strong> may never use her feetagain.“It got to the stage wherewe couldn’t <strong>do</strong> it at home anymore.<strong>Niketa</strong> was in such pain.We went back into hospital andwere then transferred into theWilson Centre, a rehabilitationunit for children,” says Pip.<strong>Niketa</strong> and Pip moved intothe Wilson Centre for sevenmonths, where <strong>Niketa</strong> undertookphysiotherapy three timesa day, something she describesas absolute agony.“I had to try and mentallyblock the pain. Even though Iwas on medication to help easeit, the pain was still there. I evensaid to my mum and the <strong>do</strong>ctor,‘Would it help if you just amputatedmy legs?’ I just wantedthe pain to go away,” explains<strong>Niketa</strong>.“But I had to keep positive.And it was when I received aletter from Grand Master Lan,a <strong>Taekwon</strong><strong>do</strong> World Championbased in Germany, saying hebelieved that I could beat thisand that I was a fighter, that Istarted to push myself.”<strong>Niketa</strong> says that while thephysiotherapy helped, it wasreally her instructor, MasterPaul McPhail <strong>of</strong> Papakura, whoreally helped her begin walkingagain.While she was still in herwheelchair, <strong>Niketa</strong> still participatedat <strong>Taekwon</strong><strong>do</strong> training,with her goal always set in theback <strong>of</strong> her mind - to competein the Brighton World Cup inEngland in October and MasterMcPhail was there supportingher through the whole process.By Christmas last year, <strong>Niketa</strong>had progressed onto crutchesand had began preparing hertraining schedule for her blackbelt.But as <strong>Niketa</strong> progressed andbegan controlling the pain,Pip started researching theoutcomes <strong>of</strong> people who havesuffered from RSD and wasshocked to find that successcases were very limited.“<strong>Niketa</strong> had just come so far,and the more she progressed,the more we found out howlimited success stories <strong>of</strong> RSDwere.“In most cases, the RSD hadbecome irreversible, and thepatients had to live with it forthe rest <strong>of</strong> their lives. Now thatwas hard at the time, thinking<strong>of</strong> that possibility.”Pip explained that the raresyndrome just <strong>do</strong>esn’t affectthe children, but the parents aswell.“The financial burden that ison these parents with childrenaffected by RSD was huge, I hadto give up my job and care for<strong>Niketa</strong> full time. Not only that,the children just can’t see thebig picture. They want a quickfix, like <strong>Niketa</strong>, wanting her legsamputated just to remove thepain then and there, but notthinking about how that actionis going to affect her later in life.It was really, really hard.”For <strong>Niketa</strong>, the hardest thingfor her was going from being anout<strong>do</strong>or person, who loved tobe active, to teaching herself towalk again.“But through the supportfrom my instructor, my familyand the RSD specialists, I learntnot to underestimate the truediscipline <strong>of</strong> thinking.”While it has taken <strong>Niketa</strong>well over a year to learn to walkagain, she still says she hasn’tfully recovered yet and theremay be a chance that the RSDmay come back.“I still get a bit <strong>of</strong> pain in myright leg and the <strong>do</strong>ctors saythey <strong>do</strong>n’t actually know whatcauses RSD and it might comeback during any stage <strong>of</strong> mylife. It is hard to know that butwe are working through it,” says<strong>Niketa</strong>.Pip and <strong>Niketa</strong> would like tothank the community for theirhad not explored aspects <strong>of</strong> nutrition. S<strong>of</strong>rom early on I had <strong>Niketa</strong> start takingsupplements including coconut, fish oiland vitamin D.The training sessions were very casual, and<strong>Niketa</strong> would chat away about her weekor what was happening in her life. Althoughcasual, there we many times in the hourwhere she would be in great pain and haveto push hard to achieve the goals I set her.In the first few sessions in particular shewould be crying, and she showed incrediblecourage.I recall on the first session with <strong>Niketa</strong> shewas still on two crutches - but at least out<strong>of</strong> her wheelchair.We began by trying to stand in a parallelready stance. My plan was to <strong>do</strong> somebasic punching, however I quickly realised<strong>Niketa</strong> could not stand on her own, letalone perform movements.Nikita beats the odds - with supportsupport from the time <strong>Niketa</strong>was diagnosed up until now.“It was absolutely amazing.The support enabled us to helpcontinue on with <strong>Niketa</strong> andget us to where we are today.And huge thanks to MasterMcPhail and for the only twospecialists who work with RSDaffected children in the whole<strong>of</strong> <strong>New</strong> <strong>Zealand</strong>, we are just reallygrateful,” says Pip.And for <strong>Niketa</strong>, she hopesthat her story will inspire othersto not give up, to keep pushingtheir way through the painand to keep thinking positively.“It was very hard, but I nevergive up. FEATUREI changed the plan and helped her up ontoour trampoline, and stood holding herhands and slowly bounced - well more likejust let the tramp move us up and <strong>do</strong>wngently. I remember being amazed at howmuch I was having to support her weight- I didn’t realise how much she relied onher crutches. Every now and then I wouldlet her go to see if she could support herown weight. She would drop to her kneesin pain. At that point we would spar on ourknees for fun then try again.After around 20 minutes on the tramp wemoved back to the grass and tried standingagain, using a chair behind her to sit onwhen she couldn’t continue. We managedsome punches and even some walkingstances on that first day.By the second session I had come up witha bit <strong>of</strong> a routine, and recorded how many<strong>of</strong> each exercise she could <strong>do</strong>, or the timeit took. My challenge for her was to <strong>do</strong>ublethe number <strong>of</strong> each exercise every week,so she would have to practice at home.For example, on session two we did: stance for 10 seconds on each side was almost impossible at this stage)By our third session, <strong>Niketa</strong> had successfullymet my challenge to <strong>do</strong>uble the number<strong>of</strong> techniques she performed the previousweek.Over the next few months we continuedto work on walking stances, front kicks andnormal walking. We would start and endeach session with “trampoline sparring”. Ahighlight <strong>of</strong> the session for both <strong>of</strong> us.It seems strange to think back to thesesessions now as I write this in November2012. It was only a dream then thatshe would fully recover and end up in atournament and grading again. <strong>Niketa</strong>’sMum and Dad are obviously pretty happyand relieved, as they went through atremen<strong>do</strong>us amount <strong>of</strong> pain along with her.I have been honoured to teach manypeople over the years, and helping <strong>Niketa</strong>was one <strong>of</strong> my most rewarding instructingexperiences.<strong>Niketa</strong>’s recovery is a combination <strong>of</strong> thingswhich came together at the right time,most importantly her incredible attitude.She shows such courage throughout whilemaintaining a positive outlook. FEATUREHOW TAEKWON-DO TRAINING CAN INFLUENCE ONE’SBy Mr Norman Ng IV dan, Pioneer <strong>of</strong> <strong>Taekwon</strong>-Do in <strong>New</strong> <strong>Zealand</strong>George Bernard Shaw once wrote: “Thereare two tragedies in life - one is not to getyour heart’s desire, and the other is toget it”. Similarly, there are two tragedies in<strong>Taekwon</strong>-<strong>do</strong>: one is to give up before onereaches one’s potential, and the other isto get the black belt and beyond. So thedilemma is <strong>do</strong> I continue or <strong>do</strong> I stop orwhatever, and if you continue what are yougoing to <strong>do</strong>?Today I’ll talk around 10 words. First let’stalk about COURTESY. In the <strong>do</strong>jangwe bow, and this is oriental courtesy, whenwe meet each other we pay each otherrespects, and particularly in Japan. Thesame etiquette is also required outside the<strong>do</strong>jang. In the king’s court in years goneby various etiquette and rituals have beenpractised. You see how they did it in some<strong>of</strong> those old movies. You have respect foryour seniors. But sometimes you feel thatthe seniors’ words go through one ear an<strong>do</strong>ut the other. You aren’t really listening.That’s the same for your parents - yourparents might say something to you andyou say it goes in this ear and out the other!Well <strong>do</strong> we sneer at others, and badmouthabout people behind their backs? Nothingworse than <strong>do</strong>ing that, because the person<strong>do</strong>esn’t have a chance to defend him orher self. If you want to say something bad,say it in front <strong>of</strong> the other person andlet the person defend themselves. If youhave nothing nice to say, you’d be betternot to say anything at all. Whatever is saidcannot be withdrawn. So ask yourself ifyou practice courtesy at all times. One <strong>of</strong>the criteria would be that when you meeta person for the first time you are alwayspolite and careful what you say. You shouldpractice that all the time, even with yourwife, your parents, your sisters and yourloved ones and all that, because that is topractice courtesy. I know it’s difficult. Youtake each other for granted after you’vebeen married for about 30 years, but ifyou really care for each other I think youshould go back to that. And in years tocome I hope this talk will enable you tothink back, and say well I should <strong>do</strong> that; atleast treat each other as though we metfor the first time.So next we come to ATTITUDE. Weshould treat the study <strong>of</strong> <strong>Taekwon</strong>-<strong>do</strong> asseriously as we <strong>do</strong> our tertiary studies,because as I always said, getting a black beltin <strong>Taekwon</strong>-<strong>do</strong> is just as difficult as gettinga degree in the university. We should reallystudy <strong>Taekwon</strong>-<strong>do</strong> with dedication, andI’m sure you have otherwise you wouldn’tbe here today. The <strong>do</strong>jang is the mirror <strong>of</strong>one’s life while you are <strong>do</strong>ing <strong>Taekwon</strong>-<strong>do</strong>.In the <strong>do</strong>jang we wear the simplicity <strong>of</strong> thewhite <strong>do</strong>bok, and we train in the bare hall,and there is really no class discriminationwhen you come for <strong>Taekwon</strong>-<strong>do</strong> training.Not like when you go to golf - somewear designer clothes while you’re in $5The author – Mr Norman Nguniforms! So when you come into the<strong>do</strong>jang everybody’s the same because youare wearing the same uniform, so it <strong>do</strong>esn’tmatter what your occupation is, <strong>do</strong>esn’tmatter at all. Once you put on the uniformwe are all equal.During <strong>Taekwon</strong>-<strong>do</strong> training, we experiencemany obstacles. I’m sure you have. Physicallimitations, not all <strong>of</strong> us are good at highkicks. Injuries, we all have those over theyears. Bore<strong>do</strong>m, you say oh this is gettingboring, I’m going to give it up, but youhaven’t, you’ve got this far. Family crises,financial problems like mum couldn’t affordto pay the grading fees for example, weall have those. And emotional stressesand so on.So we seek to develop non-quittingattitudes. I mean, if all these are problemsand you didn’t have good attitude youwould have given up by now. But youhaven’t so all <strong>of</strong> you here have the nonquittingattitude, and I hope you continuewith that. Obstacles and problems willalways be in front <strong>of</strong> us because that’slife, and it’s up to us as martial artists tocontinue to overcome these problems andcrises and never quit.28TAEKWON-DO O TALK MAGAZINEAZ

Master Sheena Sutherland wasmy Instructor (then III Degree) she wasassistant to Grand Master MacCallum IX,who was IV Degree when I joined.When did you receive your firstdan black belt?I was promoted to 1st Degree by GrandMaster Rhee Ki Ha OCM in March 1985. Iwas GM MacCallums last Black belt beforehe left Scotland to take up his post as undersecretary General in Vienna, as we all knowhe went on to become our founders righthand man over the next 17 years.What are some <strong>of</strong> your biggest<strong>Taekwon</strong>-Do achievements?The biggest achievements in TKD forme are un<strong>do</strong>ubtedly my Black belts andInstructors. I am at my proudest when Isee the way they look after all who walkin through our <strong>do</strong>ors. REGULARMr Mark Hutton - VII danand students remember every time theyhad the honour <strong>of</strong> participating in one <strong>of</strong>General Choi’s seminars.We all, no matter how confident, rememberall too well how nervous he made us whenwe were asked to demonstrate, and I willnever forget after several seminars withhim the first time I heard him say “whereis Mark Hutton!”He wanted me to demonstrate stepsparring, then a pattern. I was dumbfoundedthat he remembered my name let alonewished me to demonstrate.Not long after I attended a seminar inDorking England, and I arrived late due t<strong>of</strong>light difficulties and missed the morningsession. As I was registering, the organiserapproached and said “oh Mark Hutton,General Choi has been asking where youare”. Again I was shocked (and very proud).When we lined up for the afternoonsession, the General acknowledged meand came over to shake my hand. Whenthe seminar resumed I was used todemonstrate everything we did and everytime a question was asked The Generalwould say “Mark”, and every time he didwas as great as the first – what an amazingthrill. I was on cloud nine. Of course as weall know many people had this honour, I amnot saying for a moment I was above any<strong>of</strong> them, but for me it could not get anybetter than that.I <strong>of</strong>ten think <strong>of</strong> the times I spent withour Founder and find myself still learningso much from the conversations I wasso fortunate to have with him. Theseconversations un<strong>do</strong>ubtedly greatlyinfluence the person I am today, I as we allare will be forever in his debt.What is your most embarrassing<strong>Taekwon</strong>-Do moment?Oh so many to choose from, however, Ihave to say it is still my very first night in<strong>Taekwon</strong>-Do.I was 17 and had tried twice before to walkthrough the <strong>do</strong>or to the Bathgate school,however, I was so shy I had literally turnedthe entry <strong>do</strong>or handle on two previousoccasions only to stop and go home (atwo hour round trip by bus).On the third attempt I was so frustratedI literally burst through the <strong>do</strong>or at whichpoint the entire class stopped to see whatall the commotion was, every person inthe packed <strong>do</strong> jang staring at me, at thattime it was the worst possible start I couldimagine. I just stood frozen to the spot, they<strong>of</strong> course quickly carried on training andnever gave it a second thought. I on theother hand stood for what seemed like aneternity, I then walked to the seats prayingno one would come near me.It may seem nothing now but sitting thereI wished the world would swallow meup. I will always remember how hard itwas for me to join and <strong>of</strong>ten see theembarrassment in beginners and tell themjust how hard I found it.What are your personal goals forthe future?My future personal goals, like all parents, bethe best Dad I can possibly be, giving mykids the confidence to make mistakes thusensuring they participate in life rather thanspectate as I did for so long.In TKD I have many, however for me thesethree are most important, and I would loveto help in any way.Communication SkillsI believe we need to emphasise to allthe importance <strong>of</strong> focusing on goodcommunication & self awareness, thus<strong>do</strong>ors will open for our students whereverthey go, and conflict will be identified andISSUE TWO, 201231


REGULARin the main diffused without the need toemploy the physical.Youth developmentI would like to see the ITF introduceseparate structured 3-6 and 6-9 year oldprogrammes emphasising the life-skills allour young kids should have, blended withprogressive TKD skills. Fun dynamic drills,no traditional tuls until 7 or 8 years old,thus removing the distinct possibility <strong>of</strong>generating literally thousands <strong>of</strong> 10-11 yearold black belts.I feel we look only to the physicality <strong>of</strong>our black belt candidates. Flexible, greatkicks, sharp, power...wow they are greatblack belts! This promotes the “elite”athletes, whilst largely ignoring, certainlyundervaluing the other 90% <strong>of</strong> ourmembership, who as it turns out willinvariably become the Instructors whostay and ensure TKD remains. Many <strong>of</strong>our champions have a very short shelflife, leaving once they lose the drive tocompete.Practical devastating <strong>Taekwon</strong>-DoTKD was born and moulded by theGeneral, and our first generation Mastersused their skills <strong>of</strong>ten in mortal combat. It iswithout <strong>do</strong>ubt a lethal as well as spectacularmartial art, yet we have an ever growingnumber <strong>of</strong> senior Instructors promotingother arts/defence systems as a way todefend ourselves and just teaching TKD asa sport. More <strong>of</strong>ten than not I find blackbelts have no idea how to use our ownart to defend themselves. I must stress Iam in no way decrying any other system,however, I am at a loss as to why this ishappening, I find myself more and morehaving to defend our own art to some <strong>of</strong>our most senior Instructors.If this ever increasing trend is not stoppedwe will lose TKD as a martial art andhave sport alone. The tragedy will be itwas not at the hands <strong>of</strong> the WTF or anyother organisation, we will have destroye<strong>do</strong>urselves!This is why everywhere I conduct seminarsI emphasise the practicality <strong>of</strong> TKD aswell as the beautiful sport we are rightlyso proud <strong>of</strong>f. I am always thrilled at thereaction, at every seminar bar none, theInstructors and students love to see howsimply devastating our art truly is.Above all else I believe we must addressthis situation first.What are your thoughts on thefuture <strong>of</strong> ITFNZ?I have made no secret <strong>of</strong> both myadmiration for ITFNZ as an organisationas well as the bond I have felt since visitingthis wonderful country, from the Mastersto Assistant Instructors.I have been particularly impressed by thequality <strong>of</strong> the Instructors as well as theirdesire as a unit to improve all they <strong>do</strong> forITFNZ. If given the opportunity I would behonoured to assist in anyway I can in thefuture development <strong>of</strong> TKD as a completemartial art in <strong>New</strong> <strong>Zealand</strong>.In your view how has <strong>Taekwon</strong>-Do changed in NZ in the last fewyears?ITFNZ have improved immensely overthe past several years, most obvious toall is the fantastic success <strong>of</strong> their nationalteams, with the biggest gold medal haul<strong>of</strong> any National team in the history <strong>of</strong>sport TKD. However, the dedication <strong>of</strong> somany Masters and Instructors in ITFNZto grow their organisation, ensuringevery Instructor/student receives asmuch support as possible, coupled withthe pr<strong>of</strong>essional administration now inplace, puts them at the very forefront <strong>of</strong>organised martial arts along with the likes<strong>of</strong> Poland and Norway – that is a trulyremarkable transformation.What <strong>do</strong> you think makes a good<strong>Taekwon</strong>-Do practitioner?I believe the essence <strong>of</strong> a great <strong>Taekwon</strong>-Do practitioner is the same as that <strong>of</strong> agood human being, you cannot be onewithout the other, you must <strong>of</strong> course adddrive, passion, self belief tempered witha touch <strong>of</strong> humility, all <strong>of</strong> which can andshould be achieved by “intensive physicaland mental training”.32TAEKWON-DO TALK MAGAZINE

Firstly, I would like to focuson the appropriate <strong>of</strong>ficials’ attire withinvarious settings. Please take a moment toread through and make sure that you areaware <strong>of</strong> the following.Officials Attire forTournaments:Dress for Judges and RefereesOfficials shall wear the following uniform:1 navy blue blazer with ITF lapel badge(optional), 1 pair <strong>of</strong> navy blue trousers.1 ITKD tie (<strong>International</strong> Instructors maywear the ITF Tie). 1 white shirt (men) or awhite blouse (women). 1 black dress belt.1 pair white socks and 1 pair white shoes.Women <strong>do</strong> not need to wear the tie.Dress for other OfficialsOther Officials should be dressed for theirtasks in a white top (preferably collared),navy blue pants (long) or skirt, and whiteshoes and white socks. Their dress shouldbe clean and well presented. Tournamentorganisers may arrange identifying clothingdifferent from the above, as long as itappears pr<strong>of</strong>essional and responsiblyreflects the ideals <strong>of</strong> ITKD.Dress for CompetitorsThroughout the duration <strong>of</strong> thecompetition, the <strong>do</strong>bok must be worn(from <strong>of</strong>ficial opening to <strong>of</strong>ficial closing).During competition no other articles maybe worn other than those specified - i.e. nosweatbands etc. During intervals, clothingsuch as a tracksuit may be worn over the<strong>do</strong>bok.For Gradings:Dress for InstructorsAs per the judges and referees, attire withthe exception <strong>of</strong> black socks and blackdress shoes.Dress for Black BeltsAll must attend in an approved <strong>do</strong>bok asper the Standards <strong>of</strong> Dress for Training.Dress for Grading MembersStudents must attend in the approved<strong>do</strong>bok as per the Standards <strong>of</strong> Dressfor Training. Students have the option <strong>of</strong>wearing shin pads, mouth guard, groinguard (men) and chest protector (women).Grading members must also appear wellgroomed, tidy and follow the same Rules<strong>of</strong> Conduct as listed in the Standardand Discipline <strong>do</strong>cument regardless <strong>of</strong>the <strong>do</strong>jang, hall or gymnasium they aregrading in.Please note, that the supply <strong>of</strong> all therequired <strong>of</strong>ficials attire is available onthe ITKD website : www.itkd.co.nz/store.All sizes and items are available onrequest. If you <strong>of</strong>ficiate, or intend to inthe future, it is your responsibility to beappropriately dressed at events. As <strong>of</strong>ficials,the public watch you very carefully andyour appearance and accompanyingbehaviour is very important to how theyperceive the organisation. So, dress welland <strong>do</strong> us proud.The next area is to <strong>do</strong> with any NZcompetitor who has represented thecountry and who owns a foreign <strong>do</strong>bokreceived as a swap. Below is a reminder<strong>of</strong> the regulations surrounding their use:From Page 7 <strong>of</strong> the S&D <strong>do</strong>cument“Standards For Dress”“6. Doboks obtained at international eventsfrom overseas competitors maybe worn atschool level, if permission is granted by theInstructor, as they may provide inspirationand motivation. However, as they are notthe correct uniform <strong>of</strong> the Foundationthey may not be worn at any <strong>of</strong>ficial event.E.g. Regional or National Tournament orGrading.”This regulation is also important as itensures that all parties at a tournamentfeel that there is no advantage – whetherreal or perceived – that a past overseascompetitor may gain from publiclydisplaying a foreign <strong>do</strong>bok meant foroverseas use only.The last area I would like to address isabout setting the tone.A number <strong>of</strong> people have addressed meregarding etiquette issues over the past sixmonths. Various things like behaviour, slackattitudes and the poor use <strong>of</strong> titles etc. Ineed to take this opportunity to remin<strong>do</strong>ur senior black belts and instructors thatthe tone in the <strong>do</strong>jang and from students atexterior events comes directly as a result <strong>of</strong>your very clear expectations <strong>of</strong> them. Thecontrol <strong>of</strong> this is not the sole responsibility<strong>of</strong> Standards and Discipline – we cannot beat all places at once and are sadly lackingomnipresence. We all need to be beatingthe same drum. Those who know what isexpected must ensure a firm but fair handis evident both from within the <strong>do</strong>jangand from without, when at tournamentsetc. This firm hand <strong>do</strong>es not need to befrom the student’s instructor, any seniorhas the authority to pull a junior grade upand reprimand them if necessary. REGULARNOT AN INSTRUCTOR PROFILEBy Mr Brian Ricketts I dan, Te AwamutuThis is not an instructor pr<strong>of</strong>ile. Well yes Isuppose it is...For obvious reasons, instructor pr<strong>of</strong>ilesusually concentrate on a person’s <strong>Taekwon</strong>-Do experience; how they got to wherethey are now, who influenced their<strong>Taekwon</strong>-Do journey and so on. However,most <strong>Taekwon</strong>-Do students have otherthings in their lives – family, jobs, orcommunity commitments. We <strong>do</strong>n’t usuallyget to hear much about these ‘other lives’and yet how a person conducts him/herselfoutside <strong>of</strong> <strong>Taekwon</strong>-Do is as importantas what they <strong>do</strong> within the <strong>Taekwon</strong>-Docommunity.The Student Oath that we recite prettywell anywhere that formal <strong>Taekwon</strong>-Dois conducted, exhorts us to, among otherthings, seek and build peaceful relationshipswith our community. This is a promise wemake to become active in the community– <strong>of</strong> local or global extent. It is an explicitstatement that <strong>Taekwon</strong>-Do, in all its formsand manifestations, needs to be an integralpart <strong>of</strong> the community and not just a wayto earn grades and medals (<strong>of</strong> course theseare important too). Here I use the simpleword “way” deliberately because it is alsothe essence <strong>of</strong> <strong>Taekwon</strong>-Do – it is part <strong>of</strong>the name itself. A person cannot help to“build a more peaceful world” unless he/she participates in that world in ways otherthan armchair commentary.So this pr<strong>of</strong>ile <strong>of</strong> my head instructor, Mr.Ian Campbell, is from the perspective <strong>of</strong>what he contributes to the communityoutside formal <strong>Taekwon</strong>-Do, primarily asa volunteer for the local fire brigade, andthe relationship that this “other life” haswith <strong>Taekwon</strong>-Do. Of course Ian’s story isnot unique; all <strong>Taekwon</strong>-Do students havefulfilling and interesting lives and it wouldbe great to hear how they also relate to theworld at large. There is however, a subtitleto this article that will become apparentfurther <strong>do</strong>wn the page.The ‘Chief’Ian Campbell is currently the Chief FireOfficer for the Te Awamutu VolunteerFire Brigade. Ian has been a fire fighter for30 years; almost as long as he has been<strong>do</strong>ing <strong>Taekwon</strong>-Do (32 years). The Brigadehas responsibilities for the immediate TeAwamutu town area plus a broad ruralswath, and at 300 to 330 callouts a yearis one <strong>of</strong> the busiest volunteer brigadesin the country. As ‘Chief’ he has overallresponsibility for the well-being andtraining <strong>of</strong> about 35 active fire fighters (allvolunteers), and the operational demands<strong>of</strong> a brigade that these days includeattendance at a large number <strong>of</strong> motorvehicle accidents, in addition to actualfires, cats up trees and so on. This is a fairlytall order, given that the average weeklydemand on Ian’s time can be anywherefrom 10-20 hours. After all, if the chiefexpects the dedication <strong>of</strong> all the members<strong>of</strong> a brigade, there is usually a requirementthat the chief also shows similar dedication.The personnel organisation <strong>of</strong> NZ firebrigades, whether paid staff or volunteer,is highly structured. Ian has risen throughthe various ranks and with this has comeincreased responsibility. However, thejourney has not been an easy one because<strong>of</strong> the time commitment plus the physicaland psychological demands <strong>of</strong> the job. Forexample, all brigades have seen a steadyincrease in demand to attend the aftermath<strong>of</strong> motor vehicle accidents (MVAs). Thecommon public perception <strong>of</strong> this isthat fire fighters are steely people whocan take the resulting death and traumain their stride, but actually they are notmuch different from everyone else; a keenemotional balance is required, where thenasty side <strong>of</strong> rescue is <strong>of</strong>fset, if only a little,by the knowledge that they also retrievepeople alive from the mayhem. The samecan be said <strong>of</strong> fire rescue – and Ian hasbeen on the receiving end <strong>of</strong> this (forwhich he remains very thankful) when heand a partner were caught in a flashoverinside a burning building. Communityperceptions <strong>of</strong> volunteer brigade roles alsoseem to have changed over the years; forexample voiced criticism <strong>of</strong> a volunteerbrigade (not uncommon these days) is<strong>of</strong>ten followed by embarrassed surprisewhen the commentator discovers thatthose attending the incident are not beingpaid! Volunteer brigades (and other rescueoperations such as St John’s Ambulance)need trust and understanding from thecommunity they serve and so the Chiefand other members work hard to fosterthis relationship.Volunteer fire brigades, like most volunteerorganisations are made up <strong>of</strong> a prettydisparate bunch <strong>of</strong> people with variedtemperaments, skill levels and aspirations.A Brigade chief needs to manage this veryhuman element; there is probably a carryoverin this acquired management skillto the running <strong>of</strong> the Te Awamutu TKDclub; it requires dealing with members’different levels <strong>of</strong> physical ability, differentperceptions <strong>of</strong> perseverance, and fromtime to time cantankerous old students.However, Ian’s dedication to the TeAwamutu Brigade has had its drawbacks;herein lies the subtitle <strong>of</strong> this article. Anissue that has direct bearing on <strong>Taekwon</strong>-Do is his pulling back from the kind <strong>of</strong>heavy involvement in ITFNZ that seemsto be the path many senior dans follow.There are expectations for senior dans to34TAEKWON-DO TALK MAGAZINE

Ianhas organised his share <strong>of</strong> extracurriculargradings, training seminars and beeninvolved in IICs, tournaments and so on, butthe balance between brigade and TKD hasalways been difficult to resolve. But hereI hark back to my earlier comment aboutour obligations to society at large – as weare exhorted to <strong>do</strong> in the Student Oath. Ineffect this is exactly what people like Ian <strong>do</strong>,if not specifically for ITFNZ, then certainlyas an explicit response to the requirement<strong>of</strong> the ‘way’, which to my mind amounts tothe same thing.How <strong>do</strong>es activity outside the specificITFNZ purview fit the ideal <strong>of</strong> serviceto, and recognition by ITFNZ? Whatconsideration is given for senior dangrading? From a ‘points’ perspective therearen’t too many problems for peoplelike Ian; regular community volunteeringcan garner a large number <strong>of</strong> points(the Handbook lists 1 credit point forcommunity service, but Master PaulMcPhail has indicated that this can beread with some flexibility as one pointper event) .The ‘recognition’ perspective is perhapsa bit more problematic. Most communityvolunteers <strong>do</strong> not seek recognition – mostbecome involved for altruistic reasons orbecause a particular service interests them.ITFNZ exerts a significant amount <strong>of</strong> timeand effort recognising the achievements<strong>of</strong> its students, whether it be the result <strong>of</strong>grading, tournaments or service – this isas it should be. However, we (and here Imean all students and stakeholders in theorganisation) should make similar effortto recognise those who provide servicesoutside the immediate influence <strong>of</strong> ITFNZ.I reiterate a statement I made earlier but ina slightly different way – that in full pursuit<strong>of</strong> the Student Oath, ITFNZ cannot beinward-looking; the Student Oath was notinserted into <strong>Taekwon</strong>-Do protocols just tomake us feel good; I expect that GeneralChoi meant it to be taken seriously.Ian continues to work towards his owngrading toVI dan, while at the same timeproviding the Te Awamutu Volunteer FireBrigade with leadership. I’m not sure wherehe finds the time for all this, given that healso works full-time for the Department<strong>of</strong> Corrections and helps his wife Sharleenrun a retail business. And at the risk <strong>of</strong>being repetitive, I have no <strong>do</strong>ubt there aremany other <strong>Taekwon</strong>-Do students in ourorganisation who commit large portions<strong>of</strong> their lives to the benefit <strong>of</strong> societyat large, and students whose careers orinterests may be outside, but intertwinedwith <strong>Taekwon</strong>-Do. REGULARPATTERN DIAGRAM ORIGINSBy Mr Brendan Doogan IV dan, Dragon’s Spirit <strong>Taekwon</strong>-DoTECHNICALThe Chang-Hon set <strong>of</strong> <strong>Taekwon</strong>-Dopatterns practised by the ITFs aresomewhat unique in having meaningattached to the shape the performer traceswith his/her feet.The WTF and other <strong>Taekwon</strong>-Doorganisations, as well as other martialarts, have meanings associated with theirpatterns / tul / poomse / hyung / kata /forms. However, I believe the ITF tul weresome <strong>of</strong> the first to have meaningful patterndiagrams. ‘Kata’ though can translate as‘shape which cuts the ground’ , which mightgive some indication <strong>of</strong> earlier reasons forthe shape <strong>of</strong> the diagrams.Some <strong>of</strong> the pattern diagrams are explicitlylinked to the meaning. Yul-Gok and Toi-Gye are named for rival scholars in thegreat Confucianism vs Neo-Confucianismdivide in 16th century Korea. The patternmeanings both tell us that “the diagramrepresents scholar”. The diagram for Yul-Gok is interesting however, in that there isa pair <strong>of</strong> extra lines at the junction <strong>of</strong> thebase line and vertical line, to represent theperformer’s diagonal movements.Kwang-Gae tul’s diagram “represents theexpansion and recovery <strong>of</strong> lost territory”.In Chinese the figure means ‘earth’ , whichwe can understand as a reference toKwang Gae Toh Wang’s power over land.This pattern meaning seems to contradictthe idea that the Korean peoples neverconducted invasive war, only defensive.Compare with“The history <strong>of</strong>Korea containsnot a singleexample <strong>of</strong> itsmilitary forcesbeing employedfor the invasion<strong>of</strong> its neighboursor for any otherpurpose exceptnational defence” (<strong>Taekwon</strong>-Do, vol 1,p42). Or perhaps ‘expansion’ was a poorlychosen word.Po-Eun tul’s meaning states “the diagramrepresents [Po-Eun’s] unerring loyalty tothe king and country towards the end <strong>of</strong>the Koryo dynasty”. Similar to the use <strong>of</strong>Latin in Europe, Chinese writing was andis widely used in East Asia, including Korea,and this pattern diagram is another <strong>of</strong> thosecharacters. This character has a multitude<strong>of</strong> definitions, but the one that applies hereis ‘one’ – one master; loyalty.The next I dan pattern has quite a similardiagram, this time representing “[Gae-Baek’s] severe and strict military discipline”.The single vertical stroke <strong>of</strong> this character isdifficult to find a meaning for, but I believe itis associated with strong, bright, hot things,about which more below. The diagram iseasily understood from the point <strong>of</strong> view<strong>of</strong> how it is drawn – a single, powerful,uncompromising stroke.The first <strong>of</strong> the three II dan patterns isanother pattern which has a single strokeas its diagram. Eui-Am, real name SonByong-Hi, displayed in<strong>do</strong>mitable spirit“while dedicating himself to the prosperity<strong>of</strong> his nation”. This meaning is resonant withGae-Baek’s.The ultimate pattern <strong>of</strong> the Chang-Honset, in more than one sense, is Tong-Il. Thismeans ‘unification’. I had the pleasure <strong>of</strong>seeing the giant ceremonial bell <strong>of</strong> thesame name in Kyeongju, South Korea.General Choi Hong Hi fervently believed inreunification <strong>of</strong> his divided homeland, andthis pattern in both meaning and diagramrepresents that desire: “The diagramsymbolises the homogenous race”.The pattern diagram for Chon-Ji consists<strong>of</strong> a single vertical stroke crossed by asingle horizontal stroke. These two strokesrepresent the simultaneous clash andbalance <strong>of</strong> opposites: light and dark, maleand female, strong and weak. Yin-yang(um-yang in Korean, in-yo in Japanese)is the meaning <strong>of</strong> this pattern and itsdiagram, whose name “means literally theHeaven the Earth”. The idea is furtherdemonstrated by the low blocks in thefirst half and the middle blocks in thesecond half.Several other patterns have the samediagram: patriotic revolutionaries. general killed by his subordinates. army out <strong>of</strong> Korea. fought the Japanese. fought Japanese pirates.These heroes all defended their countryand were righteous men. There seemsto be a strong correlation between theircharacteristics and the use <strong>of</strong> the Chon-Jitype pattern diagram. This character canalso mean ten or perfect in Chinese.There is a second heroic pattern diagram.It is shaped like a capital I, and can meanlabourer or worker in Chinese:36TAEKWON-DO TALK MAGAZINE


REGULAR to the Silla dynasty. colonial overlord at the cost <strong>of</strong> his ownlife. scholar youths <strong>of</strong> the Silla dynasty. the greatest admiral in history. three king<strong>do</strong>ms <strong>of</strong> ancient Korea.Pattern Se-Jong is named after King Sejong.The diagram is Chinese for king. It looks likea capital I with a third horizontal stroke,halfway between the top and bottom ones.The upper stroke represents heaven. Themiddle stroke represents humanity andthe lower stroke is the earth. A king is aman – the vertical stroke – who can uniteall three realms in harmony.Choong-Jang tul, the second <strong>of</strong> the IIdan patterns has a diagram shaped likean upward pointing tack/pin. The singlehorizontal stroke has a single vertical strokeupward from its centre.There is a Chinese character meaning top,superior or highest, which comes close, butit is not clear how that might relate to thepattern meaning.These people (and one demigod) werefundamental in shaping the essence <strong>of</strong>modern Korea. Dan-gun founded thenation, Won-Hyo gave it a new religion,the Hwa-Rang fought to expand the Sillaking<strong>do</strong>m, which Yoo-Sin succeeded inmelding with the other king<strong>do</strong>ms into onenation. Choong-Moo fought the Japaneseon the water and Joong-Gun fought themon Korean soil.Juche tul has a pattern diagram shaped likethe Chinese character for mountain. Thisis linked to the self reliance philosophy <strong>of</strong>North Korea. “It is said this idea was rootedin Baekdu Mountain which symbolises thespirit <strong>of</strong> the Korean people.” This characteris what gives W shape block its Koreanname, san makgi – san is the Koreanpronunciation <strong>of</strong> the mountain character.Three pattern diagrams I have been unableto find Chinese character explanationsfor. Perhaps readers can write in if theyknow about these shapes. Do-San tul’s andUl-Ji tul’s diagrams are reflections <strong>of</strong> oneanother. Ul-Ji looks like a capital L with anextra horizontal stroke to the left, fromthe top <strong>of</strong> the vertical stroke. Do-Sanhas its horizontal strokes at the bottomleft and top right <strong>of</strong> the vertical stroke,the opposite <strong>of</strong> Ul-Ji. One way <strong>of</strong> lookingat these two characters is as one half <strong>of</strong>a swastika, an ancient religious symbolused in Hinduism, Buddhism and otherfaiths. Seen this way Do-San is half <strong>of</strong> aleft handed swastika and Ul-Ji half <strong>of</strong> theright handed version. Some months ago I was readingMaster McPhail’s blog, describing <strong>Niketa</strong>and Master McPhail’s journey together withthe aim <strong>of</strong> getting <strong>Niketa</strong> back to full healththrough physical training and nutrition.Aside from thinking what a phenomenalyoung woman <strong>Niketa</strong> is and what anexceptional instructor Master McPhail is,the part where he encouraged her to addcoconut to her diet, as well as fish oil andVitamin D supplementation daily got methinking...A few weeks later I went to theUSA for a course specifically on trainingand nutrition for kids and teens and as wegot on the topic <strong>of</strong> fat as a macronutrientI was once again reminded <strong>of</strong> <strong>Niketa</strong>. Iwondered if parents knew that the dietaryrequirement for kids is somewhat differentfrom that <strong>of</strong> adults and if the benefits thateating healthy fats as part <strong>of</strong> a balanceddiet were well known.Kids & NutritionThe first thing we always go through atlectures and seminars about kids andnutrition is that this topic is a minefield. Weare taught to be very wary <strong>of</strong> entering thisarea as there are so many opinions on thesubject and a lot different information outthere. All parents want is what is best fortheir kids. I have been inspired by <strong>Niketa</strong>and Master McPhail’s blog, as well as thenutrition lecture I attended, to ventureinto this minefield and write this articlebased on information currently out thereabout how kids use fat as a source <strong>of</strong>fuel somewhat differently to adults, andabout what good fats can <strong>do</strong> for bothkids and adults. This article is by no meanscomprehensive or conclusive. We gaininformation in this day and age at a rapidrate and I would encourage you to <strong>do</strong>some <strong>of</strong> your own investigation and seewhat other information is out there.The Geeky StuffThere is a common misconception that fatis bad and that to be healthy, fat needs tobe restricted in one’s diet. Good fats areactually an essential part <strong>of</strong> a well balanceddiet. Fat has the advantage <strong>of</strong> carryingmore energy for asmaller volume andsupplies twice as manycalories as proteinand carbohydrate. Fatand cholesterol arebuilding blocks forstructural elements <strong>of</strong>cellular membranes,the brain and otherneural tissues andare rich in structurallipids. Essential fattyacids are instrumentalin maturing centralnervous systemsincluding visualdevelopment andintelligence and fatis necessary for theabsorption and transfer<strong>of</strong> fat soluble vitaminsincluding vitamins A, D,E and K. Essential fattyacids can’t be made bythe body, so they needto be consumed inyour diet. They includeomega-6 (linoleic acid-LA) and omega 3 fattyacids (alpha-linolenic acid – ALA) foundin vegetable oils and nuts. Longer chainomega 3s (DHA and EPA) can be foundin fish.Fat as a Source <strong>of</strong> Fuel forKidsThere is another reason children needfat – their bodies appear to use it as afuel source more so than adults. Studieshave shown that pre-pubescent childrenoxidise fat at a higher rate than adults(Kris-Etherton, 2007). The thought is thatkids’ bodies oxidise fat at higher rates tosupport normal growth process such ashigher rates <strong>of</strong> protein synthesis. And thatduring periods <strong>of</strong> growth spurts fat whichis energy dense is needed.Is your child hungry all thetime?Kids (and adults) on very low fat diets,tend to eat more refined carbohydrates,which aren’t as filling. Fat increases thefeeling <strong>of</strong> being full by delaying gastricemptying <strong>of</strong> food. If your child is hungry allHealthy eating Poster by Warrior Student Andy Chanthe time, it may be worth checking if thereare enough sources <strong>of</strong> good fats in theirdiet. If you are worried about your child’sweight, research shows that kids on low fatdiets eat more food to make up for thelack <strong>of</strong> calories from fat. So we know thata no fat or low fat diet is correlated withincreased consumption <strong>of</strong> calories fromcarbohydrate including refined carbs andsugar...the answer is not to go to the otherextreme however but to make sure kidshave a diet balanced in a moderate intake<strong>of</strong> good fats for growth, development andmeal satisfaction.1-3 year olds fat content should be about30-40% <strong>of</strong> their daily calories, 25-35% for4-18 year olds and 20-35% for adults. Foractive kids that’s approximately 46g for a3-year old, 54g for a 5-year old and 63g fora 9-year old. By theend <strong>of</strong> 2011 she was unable to walk,confined to a wheelchair and in constantpain. <strong>New</strong> <strong>Zealand</strong>’s leading pain specialisttold her to forget about using her feet everagain. <strong>Niketa</strong> began to work with MasterMcPhail, initially in the limited capacity inwhich she was able to perform some smallmovements.From early on Master McPhail also had<strong>Niketa</strong> eat coconut cream morningand night. She would mix a smoothiecontaining protein powder with coconutcream, and experimented with addingother ingredients too. He also had <strong>Niketa</strong>supplement with fish oil and Vitamin Ddaily. He had been interested in nutritionfor some time and was also on a high fatdiet himself and had read a lot about thebenefits <strong>of</strong> good fats and lowering theamount <strong>of</strong> carbohydrates in one’s diet. Oneday Master McPhail came across a podcastinterview with Dr Mary <strong>New</strong>port and howshe discovered the benefits <strong>of</strong> coconutwith her husband’s Alzheimer’s diseasesymptoms. Master McPhail reasoned thatseeing as RSD was neurological in naturethat it might be worth a try to supplementwith coconut cream.Did the coconut smoothies andsupplementation help <strong>Niketa</strong> in her roadto recovery? They’re real food, and they’rereal good.A bit about CoconutBy Master McPhailCoconut is one <strong>of</strong> the richest vegetablesources <strong>of</strong> medium-chain triglycerides(MCTs). MCTs are used immediately by thebody to create energy. Coconuts are alsorich in lauric acid, which has very powerfulanti-bacterial / anti-viral properties and iswell known to support a healthy immunesystem and even facilitate brain function.Coconut Oil is incredibly heat-stable so isgreat for stir-frying and sautéing. CoconutMilk is made by mixing shredded, freshcoconut meat with water, then squeezing itthrough a sieve. Coconut Cream as coconutmilk without all the water. It’s the samestuff – pulverized coconut flesh mixedwith water – but coconut cream is thicker.There are so many other coconutproducts and all sorts <strong>of</strong> ways to usethem.And <strong>do</strong>n’t be worried about supposedlyharmful effects <strong>of</strong> the saturated fat andcholesterol in Coconut products. REGULARBy Mr Phil Thompson, Protect Self DefenceSELF DEFENCEThe sport <strong>of</strong> MMA is exploding all overthe world and has become the topic <strong>of</strong>mainstream conversation among martialartists and fighters from all styles. Manypeople are choosing to cross-train invarious MMA styles and it has beenreferred to as a more “complete” system<strong>of</strong> martial arts. This is a subject that I’ll bestleave to the martial arts experts to debate.What I am happy to discuss however is themisguided notion that MMA is the “ultimateself defence system”, or “as close to thereal thing as you’ll get” which, among otherthings, are commonly quoted by MMAexponents.That is absolute rubbish.MMA is so far away from the being the“ultimate self defence system” (if there isany such thing) as to be laughable.Let’s explore a few <strong>of</strong> the reasons whythis is…Firstly…It’s a SPORT! That should tellyou everything you need to know rightthere. In my opinion it is an excellent form<strong>of</strong> exercise and conditioning, it is fun (ifthat’s your thing), and has many positivebenefits including potentially adding toolsto your self defence arsenal. But it is asport and sport has nothing to <strong>do</strong> withprotecting ourselves against the realities<strong>of</strong> real world violence.Probably most importantly, in an MMAor any other sport fighting event, therewill be Consent, Prior Awareness, andPreparation. That is both parties have theconsent <strong>of</strong> each other to be there and totake part in the event, both parties haveprior awareness <strong>of</strong> what is happening, andboth parties have preparation time. Theseare luxuries we <strong>do</strong> not possess in a realself defence situation and, all by themselves,show how polar opposite these twosituations are.The focus is on winning. In an MMA eventboth opponents are focusing on winningagainst the other opponent. This is a verydifferent mindset to reality where the focus<strong>of</strong> your opponent may be to viciously,and without conscience or boundaries,seriously injure, rape, or murder you. Yourfocus may be to purely survive and gethome to your loved ones, or to protectyour loved ones in the moment. This willcreate substantially different emotions,thoughts, levels <strong>of</strong> fear, anger, uncertainty,and a completely different level <strong>of</strong> physicalarousal. Basically, it isn’t just a different game,it’s a different world.It is a physical “fight”. MMA, like most martialarts, only address the physical aspects <strong>of</strong> a“fight”. This is not even close to a complete“system” <strong>of</strong> self defence. Real self defencetraining must include the behavioural andpsychological aspects <strong>of</strong> self protection,recognition and awareness strategies, deescalationand defusion tactics, realisticphysical protection strategies whichaddress real-world situations, and posteventissues. MMA <strong>do</strong>es not include thesethings. Why? Because it <strong>do</strong>esn’t need to. It’sgot nothing to <strong>do</strong> with self defence; it’s asport, so it focuses on training athletes forsport fighting and is very good at it.There are no weapons involved inMMA events. MMA is a sport with manyrules, regulations, and boundaries. Realworldviolence is not and has no rules andno boundaries, at least not on the part <strong>of</strong>the attacker. You can be fairly assured thatin an MMA fight your opponent won’t pullout a knife in the middle <strong>of</strong> your bout andstart gutting you with it. You can be fairlyconfident that he won’t crack your armwith a baseball bat or break a beer bottleand try to sever your jugular with it.He’s unlikely to try to smash your facein with a brick or beat you unconsciouswith a crow-bar. Weapons, either specificor improvised are commonplace in realworld violent situations and all self-defencetraining should assume the presence <strong>of</strong> aweapon on the attacker(s) somewhere.Your training needs to include the precontactstages and awareness <strong>of</strong> precontactindicators so that a weapon can beintercepted at the earliest point, as well asrealistic weapon defences and post-eventmanagement issues. If you’re training <strong>do</strong>esnot include this aspect, then it is not evenclose to real, plain and simple. Have youever seen any <strong>of</strong> this in an MMA fight ortraining?There are no multiple attackersin MMA events. In the ring, you arefighting one person and one person onlythroughout the entire fight. You can be fairlycertain that your opponent’s friend won’tjump in the ring and kick you and stompyour head while you have your opponent inthe guard position. His friends won’t jumpin and smash a bottle or crow-bar againstyour skull in the ring while you are focusingon your opponent, or stab you repeatedlyin the back while you are clinched withyour opponent. You <strong>do</strong>n’t have to worryabout being blindsided by your opponent’sfriend or grabbed and restrained by a“helpful bystander” or bouncer whileyour opponent takes advantage <strong>of</strong> thatand viciously attacks you. In reality, thesethings can happen and if your training isnot preparing you for these things then itis not realistic self defence training.You fight in a controlled environmentin MMA events. In MMA events, likemost other sport fighting and sparringmatches, you fight on a flat, open surfacewhich is <strong>of</strong>ten padded. You <strong>do</strong>n’t grappleon gravel or broken glass or cement inMMA events, which if you <strong>do</strong> in realitycan cause huge amounts <strong>of</strong> damage veryquickly. You <strong>do</strong>n’t have to worry about aslippery surface, like spilled alcohol, rain, ice,gravel etc in MMA events. You <strong>do</strong>n’t have toworry about darkness, rain, low visibility inthe ring. You’re not in a train, on a staircase,in an elevator, or in a toilet stall in a MMAfight. You <strong>do</strong>n’t have to worry about beingpushed through a plate glass win<strong>do</strong>w andbeing disfigured by broken glass or gettingtossed <strong>of</strong>f a balcony <strong>of</strong> a 5-storey building,or tripping on a curb and falling while youropponent starts stomping and rainingstrikes on you. There is no furniture orother obstacles around you which couldinhibit your movement and/or escape inthe ring. It is not too <strong>of</strong>ten you will findyourself on a nice, flat, s<strong>of</strong>t, open and evensurface if you have to protect yourself forreal. A bit different, yes?Your clothing and other variableswon’t limit you in MMA events.Usually when you fight in an MMA or sportfighting event you’ll be wearing specificclothing, maybe gloves and other protective40TAEKWON-DO TALK MAGAZINE


REGULARgear, maybe no shirt or a gi/<strong>do</strong>bok etc.You’re certainly not wearing a suit andtie or skirt and heels in MMA. You’re notwearing winter boots, gloves and a big puffywinter jacket in the ring. It’s unlikely youwill have your shirt pulled over your headwhile your opponent buries punches intoyour head or that your tie will be used tochoke you.Your health and state <strong>of</strong> being isn’tan issue in MMA events. When youcompete in an MMA or sport fight (andmaybe sparring too) you are in a goodstate <strong>of</strong> health and a good mindset. You<strong>do</strong>n’t compete if you have a flu or fever orsickness when fighting in the ring. You <strong>do</strong>n’tcompete and fight if you have a sprainedankle, broken wrist or bad back in MMAevents. You won’t compete if you only hadfour hours sleep per night over the lastthree days due to a hectic work scheduleor crying baby. You won’t compete if youhad too much to drink with some matesthe night before and you feel like hell. Inreality you may very well find yourself thetarget <strong>of</strong> predatory aggression at a timewhen you are injured or unwell and thatcan have an enormous impact.Your opponent is not high on P,Heroin, Morphine, Cocaine, or anyother substance while fighting inMMA events. Have you been told thereis no difference? If so, it’s seriously time toexplore the source <strong>of</strong> that advice becausethese factors can make a significantdifference!In an MMA fight you know youropponent and what style <strong>of</strong> fightinghe trains in before the fight and cantherefore prepare for him weeks ormonths in advance.You know when, what time andwhere you are going to fight inadvance and you can train, eat, sleep andsupplement accordingly prior to the fight;you even have the luxury <strong>of</strong> warming upbefore the fight. In reality your opponentwill always choose the time and place <strong>of</strong>your attack, and that will usually be whenyou are at a perceived disadvantage.In an MMA fight you are by yourself.You are not with your partner, family orfriends. You’re not carrying your 10-montholdbaby in your arms while fighting in anMMA event. Your partner or mother isn’tnext to you while fighting. You are notconcerned about protecting your love<strong>do</strong>nes or getting them to safety amid thedanger, nor <strong>do</strong> you have to be concernedabout how they may react in the situationwhich may make things much worse.You can tap out. Yep, in MMA and othersport fighting you can “tap out” and stopthe fight. The referee can also stop the fightor your corner can throw in the towel.Ummm…These things <strong>do</strong>n’t work in areal situation…There are RULES! In MMA andsport fighting there are rules which bothopponents must follow. In reality YOUmay have rules, such as certain boundaries(good or bad) which your training hasprogrammed you for, moral and ethicallimits, awareness <strong>of</strong> your rights/limits underthe law and others. Unfortunately youropponent may have a completely differentset <strong>of</strong> rules and boundaries, or in fact hemay have absolutely none at all.See the differences? This is not an exhaustivelist but each <strong>of</strong> these points are crucialelements in a real confrontation or selfdefence situation.MMA and other forms <strong>of</strong> sport fightingare great for what they are, but they areNOT a “self defence” system at all andit is dangerous for anyone to confusethe two as such. Could training in goodMMA enhance your self defence skills?Yes. It could add many additional toolsto your “toolbox” and also give you agreater understanding <strong>of</strong> MMA tacticswhich will help if you come up against anMMA trained opponent in a real situation.It could definitely be useful, but <strong>do</strong>n’t fallinto the trap <strong>of</strong> thinking it’s the “ultimate”self defence system as that could put youin a dangerous position in a real situation.My advice is to never believe the hype or justfollow advice blindly based on someone’s“position” or rank. Instead intelligently askquestions, diligently research, challenge theprocess, and continue to grow. REGULARTHE TRAINING PRINCIPLE OF OVERLOADBy Mrs Sonya Robinson III dan, Mea<strong>do</strong>wbankFITNESSHaving observed and joined into theHP (High Performance) Sessions fromtime to time I admire the intensity andcommitment that our TKD athletes display– they work jolly hard to get to where theyare and they deserve the results that theyare getting.So given that we may not have the timeor the inclination to take our TKD that far,how can we still improve our TKD andgeneral fitness? Over the next few articleswe will be looking at different basic trainingprinciples and how they relate to our TKDtraining and general fitness.Let’s have a look at the principle <strong>of</strong>Overload.An activity must be hard enough (thinkstressful even) to produce a physicalchange or adaptation.It’s all relative in that if you were incrediblyunfit then even a short walk might bestressful to you but once you start andyour body adapts to your new regime <strong>of</strong>training then you will find as time goes bythat it just gets easier and easier and thatyou need to work harder again to see andfeel further improvements.Because it takes time for physical (orphysiological) responses to occur trainingshould be gradual and progressive – wecan’t go from zero to hero – much as wemay like to!So rather than training every day at afrantic rate to achieve an improvement inour performance, our training progressionshould be discontinuous and if it weregraphed our physical progress or level <strong>of</strong>fitness would look like a staircase ratherthan a hill. We train for a while and <strong>do</strong>n’tnecessarily see improvements right away– a plateau – keep persevering because all<strong>of</strong> a sudden something seems to click andwe’ll notice that we’ve improved or it justfeels so much easier – we’ve stepped upto another level.Our Gradings and Competitions aregreat in that they give us goals to workto – each belt is like the next step for usto aspire to before we look at the nextand Tournaments give us an opportunityto test ourselves under pressure – muchlike Gradings <strong>do</strong>.So the Principle <strong>of</strong> Overload has a cycle– Increase the demands you make on“In an athlete’s most criticalcompetition, they never magicallyrise to the occasion; rather theysink to the level <strong>of</strong> their training.”From an article called Research-Supported Sport Conditioning by Peter Twist and Byrne Elliotyour body – the body makes progressby adapting to the demand – you needto increase the demands again to makefurther gains.Rest is still an important part <strong>of</strong> training1. because it’s during this time that thebody has a chance to adapt to what wasdemanded <strong>of</strong> it recently and make gainsand 2. we can’t keep placing stress onour body indefinitely and expect to keepimproving - that’s called overtraining.However - rest too long and the gains youpreviously made will be lost because youneed to keep challenging (overloading)your body to continue progressing orto even maintain a good level <strong>of</strong> fitness.If you <strong>do</strong>n’t use it, you will lose it!Next TKD talk we will be looking at Specificity.42TAEKWON-DO TALK MAGAZINE


REGULAROPTIMAL EARLY TREATMENT OF COMMON SOFT TISSUE INJURIESBy Dr Jake Pearson IV dan, KhandallahSPORTS MEDICINELike it or not, injuries are an unavoidableconsequence <strong>of</strong> participation in anyphysically demanding activity. Hopefullythese are mild, however, and with goodtreatment the interruption to trainingrelatively brief. For our elite athletes, thedifference <strong>of</strong> a few days’ recovery canbe crucial, particularly around the time<strong>of</strong> major competition, but even for those<strong>of</strong> us at the more recreational end <strong>of</strong>the spectrum it is useful to know how tomaximise speed and quality <strong>of</strong> recovery.I am talking here about joint sprains, musclestrains or significant contusion/bruising. Afew specific joint injuries have been coveredin previous articles, and some, for exampleACL injuries in the knee, require morespecialised treatment. However, for mostmild to moderate injuries the followingprinciples will apply. I see patients in myclinic every day who are suffering mediumorlong-term consequences at least in partdue to inappropriate initial treatment. It ispossible to be overprotective <strong>of</strong> an injuryand cause other problems or delayedrecovery; however, it is my hunch thatthe majority <strong>of</strong> TKDers may rather havea tendency to “tough it out” or brush <strong>of</strong>fthese sorts <strong>of</strong> injuries, and their bodies maysuffer as a result.The treatment during the first 24 hoursfollowing an injury is the most important,and the age-old acronym <strong>of</strong> RICE (rest,ice, compression, elevation) remainsthe cornerstone <strong>of</strong> early management.It has been suggested that this shouldbe expanded to PRICE (addition <strong>of</strong>‘protection’ i.e. from further injury with abrace/splint for a period for some injuries)or even to PRICED (addition <strong>of</strong> ‘diagnosis’at the end, particularly if things <strong>do</strong> notsettle reasonably quickly, obviously fromsomeone suitably qualified rather thanDr Google). The primary aim <strong>of</strong> thesemeasures is to minimise the degree <strong>of</strong>bleeding, which can cause further tissuedamage and inhibit healing.Rest is hopefully self-explanatory.Remember this applies to the injured bodypart only, and it is usually possible to stayactive in some way without stressing thedamaged area. Ice is best applied for 10-15 min. intervals every30-60 mins. Beware <strong>of</strong>“ice burns” from verycold substances helddirectly on the skin.Compression is usuallybest achieved with abandage, ideally withice treatment appliedsimultaneously. Firmpressure should beapplied but not sotight as to cause pain.Elevation: the injuredpart should ideallybe above the level <strong>of</strong>the shoulder (arm/hand injury) or pelvis(leg/foot injury) toencourage drainage <strong>of</strong>extra fluid. In additionto P/RICE/D, youshould avoid HARM inthe early stages – Heat,Alcohol, Running/exercise, and Massage.Most <strong>of</strong> these are selfexplanatory,althoughavoiding massagemay surprise some;remember this applies to the first 24-48hours after injury and also to firm massagedirectly on the injured area as opposed tosurrounding areas.Whether or not to immobilise with a cast,splint or strapping depends a lot on thenature and severity <strong>of</strong> the specific injury;however, there <strong>of</strong>ten is a role for a fairlyhigh degree <strong>of</strong> protection in the first 24-48 hours for moderately severe injuries.The art then is to know how much toget moving and in what way, and the term‘protected mobilisation’ describes this. Theinput <strong>of</strong> an appropriately trained healthpr<strong>of</strong>essional at this point is desirable.The role <strong>of</strong> anti-inflammatory medication(e.g. “Voltaren” or “Neur<strong>of</strong>en”) in theearly stages <strong>of</strong> s<strong>of</strong>t tissue injury remainsa contentious topic. My advice is toavoid these if possible for the first 48hours (there is the possibility they couldincrease bleeding early on), and ratherto use regular Paracetamol (“Pana<strong>do</strong>l”)for pain relief. There is evidence thattaking anti-inflammatories between days2-10 following an ankle sprain speeds uprecovery; however, whether there is anylonger-term effect on healing is uncertain.Completing an appropriate rehabilitationprogram under guidance <strong>of</strong> your healthpr<strong>of</strong>essional is then the key to recoveringas quickly and completely as possible.In generally this will involve regainingmovement, then strength and finallyfunction in approximately that order,with some overlap. Rehabilitation usuallycontinues well after an athlete has returnedto their sport. Many people underestimatethe time and effort required for this, andthe quality <strong>of</strong> their recovery may reflectthis.Remember though that avoiding injury ispreferable to even the best treatment. KIDSLet’s start at the very beginning.....Welcome to Issue #30Welcome to a very special issue <strong>of</strong> Kicks for Kids.by Mrs Shirley Pygott – II danJungshinThere has been a Kicks for Kids in every single <strong>Taekwon</strong>-Do Talk for11 years. #1 appeared in 2001 - Issue 2 and we are now up to #30! Weare going to have a look back at some <strong>of</strong> the highlights and we also havean interview with Kicks for Kids very own reporter <strong>Taekwon</strong>-Do Ted.This is what the very first Kicks for Kids looked like. Some things arevery different - there was only one page, it was only in black and white,had no photographs and Mrs Pygott’s drawing skills weren’t very goodback then. But using the <strong>Taekwon</strong>-Do Tenet <strong>of</strong> Perseverance she kept<strong>do</strong>ing more and more drawings and got much better!There was a little bit <strong>of</strong> colour in #22 -(2008 issue 2), and since #23(2009 issue 1) it has been in full glorious colour (a BIG thanks to MasterMcPhail, who waves his “magic colour wand” over each edition once MrsPygott has finished the drawings).Other things are the same as that very first issue: it has always been especiallywritten for kids (even if the grown-ups secretly read it too), there is alwaysa drawing <strong>of</strong> someone or something <strong>do</strong>ing a flying sidekick at the top <strong>of</strong>the first page, there is information on <strong>Taekwon</strong>-Do things, things to thinkabout or <strong>do</strong> (like puzzles) and usually something a little bit silly just for fun!We have looked at 14 episodes in the life <strong>of</strong> General Choi Hong Hi, reporte<strong>do</strong>n six <strong>of</strong> the nine National Kids Camps, seen kids in action at tournaments,found out about Korean traditions and culture, and looked twice at the theory<strong>of</strong> power. KIDSGetting to know……<strong>Taekwon</strong>-Do TedWhen did you first come to <strong>Taekwon</strong>-Do?I was part <strong>of</strong> a group <strong>of</strong> teddy bears that went to a Peeweetournament at Devonport Club in 2003 to help give out prizes.(#8 - 2003 Issue 3) I went home with Mrs Pygott and have beenhelping her with Kicks for Kids ever since.What was your first Kicks for Kids Article?I stowed away in the boot <strong>of</strong> Mrs Pygott’s car andsecretly went to the 2008 National Kids Camp. I hadsuch a good time I wrote an article all about it (#23 -2009 Issue 1). I have been to two other National KidsCamps and three Auckland North Kids Camps as well.I LOVE going to Kids Camps.What is the best thing you have found out?That a bear who lives in a cave and turns into awoman is part <strong>of</strong> the legend <strong>of</strong> Dan Gun(#7 - 2003 Issue 2).Whatis the strangest thing you have found out?That Korean Dragons <strong>do</strong>n’t need wings because they fly by magic.If you could go anywhere in Korea where would it be?To the Teddy Bear Museum in Seoul, where they havehundreds <strong>of</strong> teddy bears dressed up to show events inKorea’s history.
