Postgraduate Generalist Placement (<strong>PGGP</strong>) Education Programme<strong>In<strong>for</strong>mation</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>Applicants</strong> interested in Rural General PracticeThank you <strong>for</strong> your enquiry regarding the <strong>PGGP</strong> Programme.Trainees in their 2 nd or 3 rd postgraduate year can apply to be placed <strong>for</strong> three months in a rural generalpractice approved by <strong>The</strong> <strong>Royal</strong> <strong>New</strong> <strong>Zealand</strong> College of General Practitioners. During your threemonths you will see patients every day and receive one-to-one teaching and oversight from anapproved and experienced general practice teacher.<strong>2013</strong> Dates4 th quarter: 26/08/<strong>2013</strong> – 24/11-<strong>2013</strong>20<strong>14</strong> Dates1 st quarter: 25/11/<strong>2013</strong> – 23/02/20<strong>14</strong>2 nd quarter: 24/02/20<strong>14</strong> – 25/05/20<strong>14</strong>3 rd quarter: 26/05/20<strong>14</strong> – 24/08/20<strong>14</strong>4 th quarter: 25/08/20<strong>14</strong> – 24/11-20<strong>14</strong>At first, you spend time orientating yourself to the area, the practice, the computer system, etc. butvery soon you will be able to see patients by yourself, with the teacher available to assist and consult.To maximise the experience of the rural training programme, you are encouraged to stay in the area<strong>for</strong> the three months, although some trainees choose to commute while others spend Monday-Fridayin the area, travelling home at weekends.<strong>The</strong> programme is funded by Health Work<strong>for</strong>ce <strong>New</strong> <strong>Zealand</strong> <strong>for</strong> doctors in their second or thirdpostgraduate years. Placement could be in any of our accredited rural teaching practices throughoutthe country. (<strong>The</strong> placement is decided between the trainee and the College depending on availabilityof practices.)<strong>The</strong>re is a minimum requirement of <strong>New</strong> <strong>Zealand</strong> or Australian citizenship or <strong>New</strong> <strong>Zealand</strong> permanentresidency as well as general registration with the Medical Council of <strong>New</strong> <strong>Zealand</strong>. Please note also:doctors who have been graduated <strong>for</strong> longer than three years will need special dispensation <strong>for</strong>funding to be on this programme and this is assessed on a 'case-by-case' basis.<strong>The</strong> programme is very popular, with excellent feedback from previous trainees. <strong>The</strong>re is no <strong>for</strong>malapplication deadline, but places on the programme are limited so we encourage you to apply as earlyas possible.You will be paid a tax-free training bursary of $12,500 <strong>for</strong> the three months. Furthermore you may bereimbursed up to $2000 to subsidise travel/relocation and accommodation cost. <strong>The</strong>re is one week(five days) of holiday plus any stat days or days in lieu during this run. <strong>The</strong> five days holiday is nontransferable.
