DAREBIN HERITAGE STUDY STAGE 2BackgroundThe study is an outcome <strong>of</strong> Council’s undertaking to prepare a comprehensive <strong>Heritage</strong> <strong>Study</strong>for the entire municipality. Specifically, The <strong>City</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Darebin</strong> 2005-2009 Council Plan andsupporting Strategic Planning Business Case (November 2005) states Council’s commitment toheritage planning and identifies specific areas and places in the municipality <strong>of</strong> potential localheritage significance, focussing on the northern section <strong>of</strong> the municipality where heritageinvestigations have not yet been conducted. As well, specific work is required to assess naturalheritage, eg. along creeks, and pre-European contact Koori Significance in <strong>Darebin</strong>. TheCouncil’s Municipal Strategic Statement further outlines Council’s long term strategic directionsand measures to protect the <strong>City</strong>’s heritage places, including researching additional aspects <strong>of</strong><strong>Darebin</strong>’ history and heritage.In addition, the project brief observed existing data shortfalls in the citations for individualplaces and the comparative analysis for heritage places.The objectives <strong>of</strong> the study are therefore to:• Identify the key themes and sub-themes in the historical development <strong>of</strong> the study area.• Explain how these themes have influenced settlement and development patterns within thestudy area.• Provide a clear context for the identification, assessment and on-going management <strong>of</strong>places <strong>of</strong> heritage significance in the study area, including filling gaps in existing studies.<strong>Study</strong> outcomesIt is expected that this thematic environmental history for the study area will provide:• An indication <strong>of</strong> places <strong>of</strong> potential Indigenous, natural and cultural significance within thestudy area including those identified by previous studies as well as new, previouslyunknown places.• A context for the comparative assessment <strong>of</strong> places <strong>of</strong> Aboriginal, natural and culturalsignificance.• A strategic base for establishing a future work program for the next stage <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Heritage</strong>Strategy to be undertaken for the study area.Please note that the list <strong>of</strong> places provided as examples <strong>of</strong> the theme at the end <strong>of</strong> each chapterare indicative only and further heritage assessment will be undertaken as part Stage 2 <strong>of</strong> the<strong>City</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Darebin</strong> <strong>Heritage</strong> <strong>Study</strong>.4
