VOLUME 2: THEMATIC ENVIRONMENTAL HISTORYIn 1891, a small wooden church in Arthurton Road Northcote was opened and was extendedover the next few years. <strong>Darebin</strong> came under the Clifton Hill Mission until 1893, when thedistrict <strong>of</strong> Northcote and Preston was formed as a distinct mission under the charge <strong>of</strong> FatherThomas Brazil. In 1897, a more suitable site was acquired in Westbourne Grove on Rucker’sHill. The new St Joseph’s Church was opened by Archbishop Carr in 1917. The CatholicChurch built a number <strong>of</strong> other churches in <strong>Darebin</strong> in the twentieth century to meet theneeds <strong>of</strong> Catholics in new communities as urban expansion spread (<strong>Darebin</strong> HistoricEncyclopedia; Lemon, 1983:112).Figure 72Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Bell Street,Preston(image date unknown)[DHE, ID 428]Twentieth century revivalAs the economy revived after the 1890s depression and urban settlement re-commenced, somenew denominations also arrived in <strong>Darebin</strong>. The Churches <strong>of</strong> Christ, an evangelical revivalistdenomination <strong>of</strong> American origin, formed a church in Preston in 1902 and bought land inHigh Street. In 1911 the members expressed the enthusiasm <strong>of</strong> the new age through theAmerican tradition <strong>of</strong> building a church in one day. On Saturday 23 March, 150 peopleworked on building the neat timber chapel, and by midnight it was finished. The first servicewas held the following morning.
