A VOLUNTEER COMMUNITY PROJECTWhat is REACH?REACH is a novel volunteer community project developing a primary healthcare service fordisadvantaged residents of Melbourne. The project is driven by its volunteer membership –students and recent graduates of healthcare disciplines at the University of Melbourne. Thedisciplines currently involved are Social Work, Nursing, Medicine and Physiotherapy. Our goal is to develop a comprehensive, interprofessional healthcare service that works withthe community to meet their needs. As we are a student-driven project, we get to design thishealthcare service according to the complex health needs of our clients, according to theirpriorities; and to the interprofessional and community practice learning needs of ourvolunteers to support this.Currently our main method of service delivery is the REACH Clinic. Clinical services areprovided by a clinical team of volunteer students under the supervision of volunteer qualifiedhealth professionals. We plan to extend community services beyond clinic hours in the future.REACH is possible through a unique collaboration between the students, Doutta GallaCommunity Health (DGCH) and the University of Melbourne. The REACH ClinicOpening HoursThe REACH Clinic operates from 1-5pm every Saturday at Doutta Galla Community Health,12 Gower Street, Kensington.Clinical SupervisorsClinical Supervisors are the volunteer qualified health professionals that supervise ourstudents. Clinical Supervisors areconsidered volunteers of DGCH, and are insured for liability through DGCH.Model of Care: ‘Collaborative Practice’REACH has developed its own interprofessional model of care: Collaborative Practice. Thisentails a unique system of clinic operations and education that promotes teamwork amongthe disciplines to improve client health outcomes.
