Rules of <strong>Badminton</strong>The game:Matches are played to the best of three sets.Game is now played to 21 points. If the score reaches 20-20, the winner is theplayer or team with a two-point advantage.If the score goes up to 29-29, the winner is the first to reach 30 points.Rallypoint scoring – points are scored no matter who has serve.A team now has only one serve in doubles, rather than two under the old <strong>rules</strong>.Serving:To start a game, you can:o Spin the racketo Rally for serveo Coin tosso Hit the bird up in the air, allow it to fall and whatever side the rubberfaces, that team has serveIn singles:o Players must serve diagonally from one service box to another,alternating between the left and right side of the court as points are won.o If you have an odd score (eg. 3, 9) you serve from the left service boxo If you have an even score (eg. 0, 2) you serve from the right service boxIn doubles:o Players must serve diagonally from one service box to another,alternating between the left and right side of the court as points are won.o If the team score is odd (eg. 3, 7) the player on the left side serveso If the team score is even (eg. 0, 8) the player on the right side serveso Switching If the team scores a point on their OWN serve, playersswitch service courtso There is NO second serve in doubles (eg. Your partner does not get achance to serve)The birdie must be hit below the server's waist and the racket head must staybelow the server's wrist, which means the shot must be played underarm.The serve must pass the service line on the opponents side for the play tocontinueIf the birdie hits the top of the net and is going to fall in the correct service box,the opposing player must play their shot (Let serve rule)If the birdie hits any boundary line and rolls out, it is considered “in”.


The court:<strong>Badminton</strong> is played indoors, on courts 6.1m wide by 13.4m long.The net posts are 1.55m high.TYPES OF SHOTS (STRATEGY):Clears:o Overhead – a high arching shot used to place the birdie deep in youropponents courto Underhand – same as above but an underhand technique is used (similar to aserve)


Drop shot:o A low shot allowing the bird to “drop” over the net in order to move youropponents closer to the netServes:o Short – if your opponent is playing back, serve should be placed just past theservice lineo Long – if your opponent is playing back, serve should be placed deep in theservice boxSmashes:o The bird is hit fast, hard, and straight down to your opponent in order to winthe point outright**A GOOD VARIETY OF SHOTS AND SERVES WILL MOVE YOUR OPPONENTAROUND THE COURT AND ALLOW YOU TO WI N MORE POINTS**
