ETHERNET & MULTI-SERVICE OVER PDH/SDH/SONETGreater efficiency with multiplexing. General rules applicable<strong>to</strong> most traffic streams are usually true for data transmissionsas well: Currently operating network components andstructures should be utilized fully and efficiently <strong>to</strong> providefurther cost reductions. The multiplexing process is an excellentsolution for the optimisation of the capacity parametersof fiber optic and copper networks and hence significant costreductions.The key parameter criterion for the determination and evaluationof fiber optic applications is great line and transmissioncapacity. In point-<strong>to</strong>-point connections set up with integratedfiber optic modems, only one signal is transmitted across asingle fiber. However, the application of multiplexers – solutionsused for aggregating (pooling) several signals and theirsubsequent joint transmission across transparent media– should result in the reduction of costs related <strong>to</strong> fiber opticcables and in improved efficiency parameters of previouslyset-up networks.In the course of multiplexing, the data received are convertedin<strong>to</strong> higher bit rate streams, and subsequently transmittedvia copper or fiber optic cables. This organization schemeensures that data receive <strong>from</strong> different sources (central computerunits, carrier backbone systems) and data transmittedvia various pro<strong>to</strong>cols (ESCON, SDH, SONET, ATM, IP) may betransmitted simultaneously via a single connecting cable. Ininput/output devices, optical signals will be reconverted, i.e.the original data formats will be retrieved. Then, such signalswill be transmittable via copper or optical fiber lines.
