Medic<strong>at</strong>ions:Upon admission, a medic<strong>at</strong>ion consent form is signed by theparent/legal guardian. Any new medic<strong>at</strong>ion(s) must be approved bythe parent/legal guardian. Educ<strong>at</strong>ion on medic<strong>at</strong>ion is provided <strong>to</strong>each child by the unit nurse and upon request <strong>at</strong> any time. Please letus know if you have any concerns about your child's medic<strong>at</strong>ions.Here's some helpful inform<strong>at</strong>ion about “as needed medic<strong>at</strong>ions”we may give your child for pain, upset s<strong>to</strong>mach, and <strong>to</strong> help him/her sleep:• ACETAMINOPHEN (Tylenol)I. Reasons for Taking:Acetaminophen is used <strong>to</strong> relieve pain from headaches, muscleaches, menstrual periods, colds and sore thro<strong>at</strong>s, <strong>to</strong>othaches,backaches, and <strong>to</strong> reduce fever. It works by changing the way thebody senses pain and by cooling the body.II. Side Effects:Acetaminophen does not often cause side effects. The medic<strong>at</strong>ionwill be s<strong>to</strong>pped if any of the following occur: rash, hives, itching,or swelling.III. Precautions:Acetaminophen is contained in many available products. Careshould be taken <strong>to</strong> avoid taking more than the recommendedamount of acetaminophen per dose or per day.• CALCIUM CARBONATE (Tums)I. Reasons for Taking:Calcium carbon<strong>at</strong>e is used as an antacid <strong>to</strong> relieve upset s<strong>to</strong>mach.Calcium carbon<strong>at</strong>e also is a dietary supplement used when theamount of calcium taken in the diet is not enough. Calcium isneeded by the body for healthy bones, muscles, and heart.II. Side Effects:Calcium carbon<strong>at</strong>e does not often cause side effects. It may rarelycause the following side effects: nausea or vomiting, decreasedappetite, constip<strong>at</strong>ion, dry mouth, or increased urin<strong>at</strong>ion.III. Precautions:Calcium can decrease the effects of some other medicines bybinding <strong>to</strong> them or by changing the acidity of the s<strong>to</strong>mach orthe urine.Continued on next page.11
