The Child and AdolescentPsychi<strong>at</strong>rist supervises the team and is responsible for final decisionsabout your child's tre<strong>at</strong>ment. The <strong>at</strong>tending psychi<strong>at</strong>rist meets withp<strong>at</strong>ients individually, consults regularly with other tre<strong>at</strong>ment teammembers, and <strong>at</strong>tends “rounds” <strong>to</strong> review the p<strong>at</strong>ient's progress.Unit Manager: Supervises the nursing staff in all aspects ofp<strong>at</strong>ient care. Primary Therapist: Master's prepared clinician (MSW or LPC) whoconducts weekly family and individual sessions. The therapist helpsp<strong>at</strong>ients and families cope with psychi<strong>at</strong>ric illness and its impact ontheir lives. The primary therapist also makes sure th<strong>at</strong> optimaldischarge planning and aftercare arrangements are made for eachp<strong>at</strong>ient. Also conducts group therapy sessions twice weekly on theresidential units.Clinical Intake Specialist: Works with p<strong>at</strong>ient, family, and insurancecarrier <strong>to</strong> provide the best services allowed under policy coverage. Aclinical intake specialist also coordin<strong>at</strong>es admissions and referrals.Meetings you are expected <strong>to</strong> <strong>at</strong>tend:• Admission• Initial tre<strong>at</strong>ment team meeting (within first ten days)• Family therapy once per week (in person, phone,or telemedicine)• <strong>Tre<strong>at</strong>ment</strong> review meetings every four weeks• Educ<strong>at</strong>ion planning meetingsYour particip<strong>at</strong>ion is important! If you live far away andtraveling is hard, we can sometimes hold these meetings by phone orthrough our teleconference network. School <strong>at</strong> <strong>Shodair</strong>:<strong>Shodair</strong> residential units have an accredited school. <strong>Residential</strong>p<strong>at</strong>ients will be tested <strong>to</strong> learn more about their educ<strong>at</strong>ional needs.Your child will be given school m<strong>at</strong>erials th<strong>at</strong> meet his/her needs andallows him/her <strong>to</strong> continue <strong>to</strong> earn school credits.Our teachers will be in contact with you and your child's schooltwice a month <strong>to</strong> let you know about your child's progress. Ourteachers will also hold meetings <strong>to</strong> upd<strong>at</strong>e and review importanteduc<strong>at</strong>ional plans for your child, such as the Individual Educ<strong>at</strong>ionPlan (IEP) and the child study team.Near the end of your child's stay here, our teachers will contact you<strong>to</strong> set up an exit review conference. This will also involve yourchild's school and other providers who need <strong>to</strong> know how <strong>to</strong> helpyour child transition <strong>to</strong> school outside of <strong>Shodair</strong>."Not only did <strong>Shodair</strong> care for my child,but they cared for my entire family."<strong>Residential</strong> Therapeutic Groups:There are a variety of therapeutic groups for children in residentialtre<strong>at</strong>ment <strong>at</strong> <strong>Shodair</strong> Children's Hospital. Depending on your child'sage, he/she will particip<strong>at</strong>e in many of the following:6Circle Ups or Community Meeting• Staff and p<strong>at</strong>ients come <strong>to</strong>gether <strong>to</strong> discuss ways <strong>to</strong> improve theunit, talk about concerns, and problem solve. The agendaincludes introductions, good-byes, safety concerns, peer issues,accountability, and appreci<strong>at</strong>ions.Group Therapy• Focuses on building skills in crisis intervention, distress<strong>to</strong>lerance, emotion regul<strong>at</strong>ion, self-awareness, and interpersonalrel<strong>at</strong>ionships.• P<strong>at</strong>ients are able <strong>to</strong> learn about and practice these skills bothin and out of the group setting with the support of staff.


Goal Group• The purpose of this group is <strong>to</strong> help p<strong>at</strong>ients feel supportedand successful every day.• P<strong>at</strong>ients are encouraged <strong>to</strong> make a short-term goal in themorning <strong>to</strong> accomplish th<strong>at</strong> day. In the evening, they report onhow they did and are given positive feedback.Expressive Therapy• Offers p<strong>at</strong>ients an opportunity <strong>to</strong> express themselves insafe ways.• Music, games, movement, art, and other activities are utilizedin an effort <strong>to</strong> help p<strong>at</strong>ients learn coping skills and problemsolving techniques.• Group social skills are emphasized.Fitness Room• P<strong>at</strong>ients are given the opportunity <strong>to</strong> use many different fitnessmachines, exercise balls, and stretching m<strong>at</strong>s <strong>to</strong> improve theirphysical fitness, enhance self esteem, and relieve stress.Music Therapy• Uses music based interventions <strong>to</strong> help p<strong>at</strong>ients reach theirtre<strong>at</strong>ment goals.• Groups are designed by a certified music therapist <strong>to</strong> promotewellness, stress management, expression of feelings, enhanceself-esteem, and improve communic<strong>at</strong>ion skills.Recre<strong>at</strong>ion Therapy• P<strong>at</strong>ients are given the opportunity <strong>to</strong> learn new games wheresocial skills, team work, and physical fitness come <strong>to</strong>gether ina fun and safe environment.Sensory Bins• P<strong>at</strong>ients use imagin<strong>at</strong>ive play through child-friendly m<strong>at</strong>erial,such as dry beans, rice, Moon Sand, and w<strong>at</strong>er. This activitycan perk a child up or calm a child down. Sensory bins helpchildren control alertness, increase <strong>at</strong>tention span, and handletransitions with less stress.Therapeutic Media Group• Utilizes cinema and music <strong>to</strong> teach life lessons with staffguidance and peer support. Includes specific discussionquestions following the film or music selection.7


<strong>Residential</strong> Units Expect<strong>at</strong>ions:At <strong>Shodair</strong> Children's Hospital, we use three simple guidelines th<strong>at</strong>apply <strong>to</strong> daily living on our residential units:• Complete daily hygiene (shower, brush teeth, comb hair, etc.).• Be nice <strong>to</strong> the property, feelings, and physical well-being(body) of self and others.• Attend and particip<strong>at</strong>e in all activities and stay with the group.If children are not meeting these expect<strong>at</strong>ions, we will work with them<strong>to</strong> find out why and come up with a plan <strong>to</strong> help them.Meals:All meals are served in the Cafeteria. Please see the insert page forthe times your child will have meals and snacks.Laundry:We help our p<strong>at</strong>ients do their laundry. All supplies are provided,including dye-free detergent.Personal Belongings:All basic hygiene supplies are provided. You may bring personalhygiene supplies if you wish, but they must be alcohol-free. Beddingsupplies are also provided, but your child may also bring a pillow andfavorite blanket.All items are checked for contraband (strings longer than six inches,sharp objects, etc.) and labeled with your child's initials. All items areentered on<strong>to</strong> a “Belongings Sheet” with a description of each item. P<strong>at</strong>ient inform<strong>at</strong>ion may bereleased only when an “Authoriz<strong>at</strong>ion of Release of Health CareInform<strong>at</strong>ion” form has been signed and/or the p<strong>at</strong>ient confidentialitynumber has been provided. A confidentiality agreement is <strong>to</strong> besigned by all adult visi<strong>to</strong>rs <strong>to</strong> <strong>Shodair</strong>. You will be given inform<strong>at</strong>ionabout p<strong>at</strong>ient rights <strong>at</strong> the time of admission.It is also important for you <strong>to</strong> know th<strong>at</strong> we are required by law <strong>to</strong>report any suspected child abuse and neglect, or child abuse allegedby anyone. If you have questions about p<strong>at</strong>ient rights or safety <strong>at</strong> anytime, please let us know right away.9


P<strong>at</strong>ient Safety:One of our most important responsibilities <strong>at</strong> <strong>Shodair</strong> Children'sHospital is the safety of your child. All children are moni<strong>to</strong>red bya member of our nursing staff <strong>at</strong> least every 15 minutes (more oftenif needed), 24 hours a day.Our staff has many other ways th<strong>at</strong> we keep your child safe.For example, all direct care staff are trained in ways <strong>to</strong> de-escal<strong>at</strong>echildren. Our direct care staff are also trained in safe ways <strong>to</strong>restrain violent or aggressive p<strong>at</strong>ients.Our hospital also has many safety fe<strong>at</strong>ures th<strong>at</strong> are part of thebuilding. They include:• Safety glass in all windows in p<strong>at</strong>ient rooms.• Specially designed b<strong>at</strong>hroom and shower fixtures.• Night lights in all bedrooms.• Cameras moni<strong>to</strong>r all p<strong>at</strong>ient care areas, except b<strong>at</strong>hrooms.• Specially designed “quiet rooms” <strong>to</strong> help children who getviolent <strong>to</strong> become calm safely in a secluded and secure area.These rooms are moni<strong>to</strong>red by staff through a camera.• All exit doors are locked and require staff <strong>to</strong> open them.• All interior doors in the p<strong>at</strong>ient care areas are locked and requirea staff member <strong>to</strong> open either with a key or badge.10Wh<strong>at</strong> Happens if My ChildGets Hurt or Sick?Every direct care staff <strong>at</strong> <strong>Shodair</strong> Children's Hospital is certified inCPR and First Aid. There are registered nurses working 24 hours aday, available <strong>to</strong> assess and give tre<strong>at</strong>ment as needed for your child.There is also a nurse administra<strong>to</strong>r and physician on call every dayaround the clock. When needed, <strong>Shodair</strong> works with local healthcare providers, like pedi<strong>at</strong>ricians or dentists, <strong>to</strong> give specialized care<strong>to</strong> your child.<strong>Shodair</strong> will always notify parents if their child is hurt or sick.


Medic<strong>at</strong>ions:Upon admission, a medic<strong>at</strong>ion consent form is signed by theparent/legal guardian. Any new medic<strong>at</strong>ion(s) must be approved bythe parent/legal guardian. Educ<strong>at</strong>ion on medic<strong>at</strong>ion is provided <strong>to</strong>each child by the unit nurse and upon request <strong>at</strong> any time. Please letus know if you have any concerns about your child's medic<strong>at</strong>ions.Here's some helpful inform<strong>at</strong>ion about “as needed medic<strong>at</strong>ions”we may give your child for pain, upset s<strong>to</strong>mach, and <strong>to</strong> help him/her sleep:• ACETAMINOPHEN (Tylenol)I. Reasons for Taking:Acetaminophen is used <strong>to</strong> relieve pain from headaches, muscleaches, menstrual periods, colds and sore thro<strong>at</strong>s, <strong>to</strong>othaches,backaches, and <strong>to</strong> reduce fever. It works by changing the way thebody senses pain and by cooling the body.II. Side Effects:Acetaminophen does not often cause side effects. The medic<strong>at</strong>ionwill be s<strong>to</strong>pped if any of the following occur: rash, hives, itching,or swelling.III. Precautions:Acetaminophen is contained in many available products. Careshould be taken <strong>to</strong> avoid taking more than the recommendedamount of acetaminophen per dose or per day.• CALCIUM CARBONATE (Tums)I. Reasons for Taking:Calcium carbon<strong>at</strong>e is used as an antacid <strong>to</strong> relieve upset s<strong>to</strong>mach.Calcium carbon<strong>at</strong>e also is a dietary supplement used when theamount of calcium taken in the diet is not enough. Calcium isneeded by the body for healthy bones, muscles, and heart.II. Side Effects:Calcium carbon<strong>at</strong>e does not often cause side effects. It may rarelycause the following side effects: nausea or vomiting, decreasedappetite, constip<strong>at</strong>ion, dry mouth, or increased urin<strong>at</strong>ion.III. Precautions:Calcium can decrease the effects of some other medicines bybinding <strong>to</strong> them or by changing the acidity of the s<strong>to</strong>mach orthe urine.Continued on next page.11

Reasons for Taking:Mela<strong>to</strong>nin is a hormone produced by the body during the darkhours (night) of the day-night cycle. Mela<strong>to</strong>nin can help the bodyget ready for sleep and makes the internal clock work right.II. Side Effects:Mela<strong>to</strong>nin does not often cause side effects. The most commonlyreported reactions <strong>to</strong> mela<strong>to</strong>nin include drowsiness and headache.There have also been occasional reports of skin reactions anditching.III. Precautions:This medicine may cause drowsiness. The person takingmela<strong>to</strong>nin should avoid driving, using machines, or doing anythingelse th<strong>at</strong> might be dangerous if he/she is not alert.Phone Calls:We encourage daily phone contact with your child. Calls are limited<strong>to</strong> 10 minutes. Please do not call during school hours. Please talk <strong>to</strong> your child's therapist ifyou want <strong>to</strong> restrict any phone privileges.

Visits... Continued from previous page.• Wh<strong>at</strong> if I visit during mealtime?If you visit during mealtime, you may bring in food <strong>to</strong> share with yourchild. Please know th<strong>at</strong> we are not able <strong>to</strong> s<strong>to</strong>re food here, so anythingnot e<strong>at</strong>en will either be thrown away or sent home with you.We are also able <strong>to</strong> provide meals for your family, free of charge, <strong>to</strong>e<strong>at</strong> with your child if you are here <strong>at</strong> mealtime. Please let us know <strong>at</strong>least one hour in advance if you would like <strong>to</strong> be served a meal.• How many visi<strong>to</strong>rs can come? Are there age restrictions?You may bring up <strong>to</strong> four people <strong>at</strong> a time when you visit your child.We do not have any age restrictions; however, children under 18must be accompanied by an adult and supervised <strong>at</strong> all times. Weask th<strong>at</strong> all visi<strong>to</strong>rs be on the approved Phone /Visi<strong>to</strong>r Log. If visi<strong>to</strong>rscome th<strong>at</strong> are either not on the approved Phone/Visi<strong>to</strong>r Log or donot have the confidentiality number, they will not be allowed <strong>to</strong> seeyour child.• Where do visits take place?Visiting will take place in a conference room or other design<strong>at</strong>edplace. Visiting on the residential units is not allowed. You may visi<strong>to</strong>n the hospital's grounds with a doc<strong>to</strong>r's order only, from your child'spsychi<strong>at</strong>rist.• Is my child allowed <strong>to</strong> leave the facility when I visit?P<strong>at</strong>ients are allowed <strong>to</strong> go on therapeutic home visits (THVs) withtheir parent or guardian. These visits are arranged by your child'stherapist. The length of time is determined by insurance companiesand the needs of the child.P<strong>at</strong>ients are allowed <strong>to</strong> leave on a pass with their parent or guardian.The passes are arranged by your child's therapist. The length anddetails of the pass should be discussed with the therapist.<strong>Shodair</strong> encourages these visits. However, if your child is notable <strong>to</strong> be safe around others, a pass/THV may be scheduled fora different time.14


Outings:From time <strong>to</strong> time, we take our residential unit p<strong>at</strong>ients on outings.Examples are movies, hikes, parks, or museums.Before taking a p<strong>at</strong>ient on an outing, the p<strong>at</strong>ient is assessed by aregistered nurse, and must be safe <strong>to</strong> leave the building. If thep<strong>at</strong>ient is on a special observ<strong>at</strong>ion, due <strong>to</strong> unsafe behaviors <strong>to</strong>themselves or others, the p<strong>at</strong>ient may not be going on the outing.Safety is our priority.Community Consults:Your child may leave the facility <strong>to</strong> go <strong>to</strong> an outside appointmen<strong>to</strong>rdered by his/her psychi<strong>at</strong>rist. Appointments th<strong>at</strong> are ordered maybe one with a dentist, pedi<strong>at</strong>rician, or op<strong>to</strong>metrist. A support staffmember always goes with your child <strong>to</strong> these appointments.“My child's therapist is a very wonderful, caring, andkind therapist. He <strong>to</strong>ok the time <strong>to</strong> fully understandmy child's tre<strong>at</strong>ment and issues, and was very helpful<strong>to</strong>ward myself and the situ<strong>at</strong>ions in my family. Colonial Drive<strong>Shodair</strong> Campus:<strong>Shodair</strong> Children's Hospital is loc<strong>at</strong>ed <strong>at</strong> 2755 Colonial Drive, off ofHelena's South Hills round-about exit. During normal week daybusiness hours, visi<strong>to</strong>rs should enter <strong>at</strong> the main entrance.
