REASON TO REJOICE

Third Sunday of Advent
Dark violet is used throughout Advent to express its character
as a season of spiritual preparation for Christmas
and “the coming of the Lord.” But on the Third Sunday of
Advent, formerly known as Gaudete (Latin for “rejoice”)
Sunday, rose may be added to the liturgical environment.
The entire liturgy is infused with a spirit of rejoicing.
Today’s first reading and Gospel proclaim the reality of
God’s saving work in our midst. Isaiah exuberantly describes
the idyllic transformation of all creation as a result
of God’s presence in the midst of the people. In the Gospel,
Jesus connects Isaiah’s prophecy with what is happening
in his own ministry. In addition to the list of healings from
Isaiah (the blind, the lame, lepers, and the deaf), Jesus’
presence brings two other reasons for rejoicing: “The dead
are raised, and the poor have the good news proclaimed to
them” (Matthew 11:5).

Novena of Masses – Novena means nine. The custom of
praying for nine days to receive grace from God comes
from the New Testament. Jesus, on Ascension Thursday,
told the disciples to go back to Jerusalem and to wait for
the coming of the Holy Spirit. They went back to the Upper
Room where Jesus had celebrated the Last Supper
and “All these joined in continuous prayer with Mary, the
mother of Jesus . . .” Acts of the Apostles 1:14. And on
the ninth day, on Pentecost, as they prayed in the Upper
Room, they received the power of the Holy Spirit.
This Christmas we are going to pray for 9 days for people
and intentions you have in your hearts. There are things
we want for the people we love that we can’t buy at the
mall. Perhaps it is health, peace in our homes, reconciliation
in the family, deeper faith in Christ for our loved
ones, a return to the Sacraments, whatever it might be.
These and many other gifts, this Christmas, we want to
give to those we love and only Christ can give them so
we are going to join in a Novena of Masses.
The Novena of Masses will be celebrated by the priest
concelebrating at the 8:45 AM daily Mass on December
28, 29, 30, 31 and January 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8 while the
Mass intention of the day will be celebrated by the priest
presiding at the Mass.
At Masses this weekend you will be given a card on
which you can list the people and intentions you wish to
pray for during the Novena this Christmas Season. No
stipend will be accepted. Just write your intentions on
the card and place it in the collection basket on December
11, 12, December 18, 19, December 24, 25, 26 or
drop the card off at the rectory any day. You may also
download the Novena Masses Intention Card from our
website at smghparish.org, complete it and return it to
smgh11416@yahoo.com

Remembrance Mass
A Remembrance Mass will be celebrated
on Friday, December 17th at 7:00
PM in Church for those who died this
year. An
invitation has been sent to each of their
families.
For many of us Christmas is a difficult
time of the year without our loved one.
It is a time for remembering both people and events that
have been part of our lives in the past but that are now
changed or gone. It is around this time we offer a Mass
that makes time for remembering, and preparing our hearts
for the coming of Christ. The Mass will be celebrated by
Fr. Gerald Fitzsimons, and concelebrated by Fr. Matthew

Mass, Sr. Anne Scahill, DW, and her
classmate Sr. Mary celebrated their 50th
Anniversaries as Daughters of Wisdom
with the solemn renewal of their vows
as religious sisters. They received a
spontaneous and well deserved round of
applause from our parishioners. Sr. Anne
also celebrated 40 years of teaching at St.
Mary Gate of Heaven School. They will
continue to be in our prayers as we thank
the Almighty for their years of generous
service in His Name.

breakfast to our parishioners

MOTIVO DE REGOCIJO
El color morado se usa durante el Adviento para expresar
el carácter de este tiempo de preparación espiritual para la
Navidad y la “venida del Señor”. Pero en el Tercer Domingo
de Adviento, anteriormente conocido como Domingo
Gaudete (“regocijo”, en latín), se puede agregar el color
rosa al ambiente litúrgico. Toda la liturgia está impregnada
de regocijo.
La primera lectura de hoy y el Evangelio proclaman la
realidad de la obra salvadora de Dios entre nosotros. Isaías
describe con exuberancia la idílica transformación de toda
la creación como resultado de la presencia de Dios en medio
de su pueblo. En el Evangelio, Jesús vincula la profecía de
Isaías con lo que está ocurriendo en su propio ministerio.
Además de lista de curaciones de Isaías (los ciegos, los
cojos, los leprosos y los sordos), la presencia de Jesús ofrece
otras dos razones para regocijarnos: “Los muertos resucitan
y a los pobres se les anuncia el Evangelio” (Mateo 11:5).

Tercer Domingo de Adviento
Novena de Misas: Novena significa nueve. La costumbre
de rezar por nueve días para recibir la gracia de
Dios nos viene del Nueva Testamento. El Jueves de la
Ascensión, Jesús les pidió a los discípulos que fueran a
Jerusalén, y esperaran al Espíritu Santo. Ellos regresaron
al cuarto en el cual Jesús había celebrada la Última Cena y
“Todos ellos perseveraban juntos en la oración en compañía
de María la Madre de Jesús...” Hechos de los Apóstoles
1:14. El noveno día, el día de Pentecostés, en lo que
rezaban en aquel cuarto, recibieron el poder del Espíritu
Santo.
Esta Navidad vamos a rezar por nueve días por las personas
e intenciones que tienen en sus corazones. Estas son
las cosas que queremos para las personas que amamos,
que no podemos comprar en un centro comercial. Quizás
sea la buena salud, paz en nuestros hogares, reconciliación
en la familia, una fe mas profunda en Cristo para
nuestros seres queridos, un regreso a los sacramentos- lo
que sea. Solo Cristo nos lo puede dar, entonces nos vamos
a unir en una Novena de Misas.
La Novena de Misas serán celebradas por el Padre que
este concelebrando en las misas del día, a las 8:45am, el
28, 29, 30, y 31 de diciembre, y el 4, 5, 6, 7, y 8 de enero.
La intención de la misa de cada día será celebrada por el
Padre que este presidiendo.
Este fin de semana, recibirán una carta en la cual podrán
poner los nombres de las personas, y las intenciones por
las cuales desea orar, durante la Novena de esta estación
Navideña. Ninguna donación será recibida. Solo escriban
sus intenciones en la carta y pónganla en la canasta durante
la colecta el 12 de diciembre, 18 y 19 de diciembre,
24, 25, y 26 de diciembre, o lleven sus cartas a la rectoría
cualquier otro día.
