OUTLOOKstrivingforconsistencyAfter a 5-0 start in 2011, the DWU football team islooking for another fast start, and then a solidfinish in 2012 as it aims for a spot atop the GPACand the NAIA.TIGER PREVIEWBy LEAH RADO, Sports Information DirectorIn his first season as head coach of the Dakota WesleyanUniversity football team, Ross Cimpl led the Tigers to theirsecond straight winning season and third straight 3-0 start. In 2013, Cimpl is looking to expand on that success.Dakota Wesleyan went 3-0 and won four of its first five gamesto start the 2012 season before ending the year 6-4 overall. The Tigers went 5-4 and finished tied for fourth in the GreatPlains Athletic Conference.DWU made it as high as No. 19 in the NAIA Top 25 Coaches’Poll and stayed in the top 25 for several weeks, but went 2-3 inthe last five games of the season and dropped out of the polls. The Tigers want to surpass the six-win mark in 2013 andstick around in the NAIA poll throughout the season. Previousseasons have provided a solid base for Dakota Wesleyan, butthis year DWU wants to expand those boundaries and pushitself to new levels of success both in the GPAC and the NAIA.“We have been making some tremendous strides indeveloping our program,” Cimpl said. “We have a bunch ofguys who want to change the culture of DWU football, and thatis exciting to be a part of. We need to continue to work hard tobecome a top-tier team in our conference and in the country.”The Tigers have the daunting task of replacing running backJosh Endres this season. Endres, who graduated in May,graduated with school records for rushing in a game, seasonand career. He broke the single-season rushing record on thefinal carry of his collegiate career and finished with 1,302 yardslast season and 3,329 in his career.Looking to fill the gap left by the three-time All-GPAC runningback is junior Francois Barnaud. He ran the ball31 times for 109 yards as a sophomore in 2011.The Tigers’ receiving corps returns plenty of experience in2013, including one of the top receivers in the GPAC and NAIAfrom two seasons ago. After redshirting last season, All-American receiver Anthony Muilenburg returns to the fieldfor DWU. Muilenburg earned All-American honors and All-GPAC First-Team honors as a junior in 2011, but he sat out the2012 season with an injury. He caught 64 passes for 855 yardsand also recorded 389 yards on kick and punt returns as ajunior and looks to have a fast return to the game this fall. Also back for DWU are receivers Arthur Brown andMichael Brown. Arthur Brown led the team with 579 receivingyards and six touchdowns and averaged 57.9 receiving yardsper game as a sophomore in 2012. OUTLOOK“Our offense has made some tremendous progress in thelast year,” Cimpl said. “We feel that the experience we have upfront, coupled with the talent we have at the skill positions, givesus a very good opportunity to score points. We are going tohave to rely on our veterans to perform at a high level, and addsome younger players into the mix to be big-time contributors.”Keeping the opposing teams’ defense at bay will be All-GPACoffensive lineman Kyle Henke. He has played in all but onegame in each of his first two seasons with the team. Also backto anchor the Tigers’ offensive line are seniors Skyler Eriksenand Eric Witte, along with junior Spencer Bloch andsophomores Ryan Zdroik and Austin Schroeder. The Tiger defense returns plenty of experience, especially atthe linebacker position. We do not have a great deal ofupperclassman on this side of the ball, but we are not lackingin experience. This group has the talent and ability to be a veryspecial group.”All-American punter Derek Carlson graduated in May, butDan Porter returns for his sophomore season after taking overkicking duties for Dakota Wesleyan last season.
