A full report on the weekend andthe decisions made will appear elsewhere in the Gazette, but I wanted to share oneparticular aspect here.Over the weekend, young people who had come to Council formed a separategroup (The Gathering) for some aspects of the programme. They were looking at theinvolvement of young people in decision making, the barriers as they saw them andpossible solutions.Members of the group made an excellent presentation to Council in the afternoon whichwas well received and invited the President and me to have further discussions withthem later on the Saturday evening (it was very late!)The Gathering represented young men from Scotland, Northern Ireland and Englandfrom a wide variety of Companies. There were many different experiences of BBpresent, but all were committed to the future and keen to play a role. Some hadtravelled alone, whilst others were part of a wider group; some had been supported bythe Company or Battalion, whilst others had funded themselves. As always the President and I were tremendously impressed by the enthusiasm ofthe young men, very similar to the experience of KGVI Courses. Sadly in the past thisenthusiasm has not always been utilised and we are both determined that this shouldnot be repeated and, with the Brigade Executive, will be looking at how the report toCouncil can be progressed.Well done to those and to the many other young leaders who make such a massivecontribution to the BB. Let us all pledge that in this new session we shall begin toovercome the barriers to participation and truly harness the immense potential withinthe organisation.Steve DickinsonDiary DatesUK4 Oct 125th Anniversary ThanksgivingService – Glasgow10-12 Oct New Horizons – Felden Lodge8 Nov Lord Mayor’s Show – City of London8 Nov Festival of RemembranceRoyal Albert Hall16 Jan 125 Challenge – Deadline for entriesto be received16 Jan International Junior Section Team Games– Deadline for entries to be receivedEngland10 Oct English National Ten Pin BowlingChampionships25 April 2009 Robin Hood, 5-A-Side Football –Nottingham22-25 May 2009 Firm Foundations – Felden LodgeNorthern Ireland24-26 April 2009 Turning PointScotland25-26 Oct Brigade Training OfficersFoundation Course10-11 Jan BTO Part 22009 7 Mar Scottish Band2009 Contest – Troon25 Apr 125th Anniversary2009 TattooTRAINING DATES A full list oftraining courses being held acrossthe UK can be found on the BBUKWebsite at www.boys-brigade.org.uk(See ‘Support’ and ‘Training’).CONTENTS112Brigade CouncilFind out what happendat the weekendCrossover118CrossoverFestivalFind out about this year’sCrossover FestivalGlobal FellowshipBrigade Canada136Other items124 Queen’s Badge133 The big tidy up134 Welcome to Development Workers138 Hikes140 Small Ads114120137London CelebratesCelebrating 125 yearswith a parade at theGuildhall125 around the UKFind out what has beenhappeningCameroon – anopportunity not to bemissedOpening of the BBMemorial GardenFind out about the BB Gardenat the National Arboretum104Regular Features116 Brigade Announcements119 Chaplain’s Corner122 Here & There128 Around the Regions130 Good Practice115Around the UK...Boys buy intoanti-virus protectionOctober 2008 The Boys’ Brigade Gazette 110October 2008 The Boys’ Brigade Gazette 111

CrossoverScotland’s biggest and best ChristianYouth Festival 13 – 15 June 2008If you wait long enough you willget a weekend of good weatherand that’s what happened withCrossover this year. It stayed dry, allowing all who attended theweekend at the Broomlee Centrein West Linton to enjoy themselves.Numbers were down this year, butthe low numbers created a goodatmosphere and for the 430attendees there was the usual mix ofworship, workshops and activities.Christian Aid & the Mission &Discipleship Council joined forces to runthe MaDHoose, a venue full of music, workshops, spa treatments and the bestcoffee and cakes at the festival. ChristianAid is currently engaged on a HIV PeerEducation project (more details elsewherein the Gazette) and as part of the project, working with young people in schoolsand BB companies around Scotland, theybrought along a group of peer educators, who were over from Malawil. They workedclosely with participants and also ranawareness workshops in conjunction withsome members from the 25th StirlingCompany from Dunblane.Christian illusionist, Steve Price, was a big hit with intriguing tricks andentertaining illusions to present the gospelmessage. Mission Aviation Fellowshiparrived in style at Crossover with their newtrailer, fully equipped with a cinema, withaircraft seats, 2 flight simulators and anexhibition areaBudding pilots willingly tried their hands atlanding planes on remote airstrips aroundthe world. Serving as the air-arm of thechurch their planes fly into the remotestareas of the world, taking medical care, emergency food and Christian hope. Many of the young people attendingCrossover were able to experience thiswork as realistically as possible. After ten years of the CrossoverFestival it’s time for a change. Becauseof falling numbers over the last coupleof years it becomes increasingly difficultto find new ideas to keep the festivalfresh. The Boys’ Brigade thereforedecided to step back from the eventafter the 2008 festival, but to datenone of the other agencies have comeforward to take the organisation onboard. The Crossover website atwww.crossover.org.uk continues to holdthe photographs from the last few yearsso the memories live on.Many thanks are due to a largenumber of willing volunteers who haveworked tirelessly for Crossover sincethe first event in 1999. You know whoyou are, well done, your work has beengreatly appreciated. As part of the 125th Anniversarycelebrations BB Scotland are planningan Activity weekend for CompanySection over the weekend of 5 – 7 June2009. Check out the article in this copyof the Gazette for more information. This year’s Brigade Council atTulliallan Castle was my firstsuch experience, but hopefullynot my last! I say that emphaticallybecause I enjoyed it so much. The business was conducted withefficiency and good humour, theworship times were exhilarating, thefood first class, the accommodationexcellent and the fellowship soaffirming. The Beating of the Retreatin semi-darkness and gale conditionswas inspiring, even for the wimps(including myself) who observedfrom behind glass. The concert atAlloa Town Hall by the 1st BearsdenCompany was brilliant – ‘This isthe Moment’ – indeed!OK? You got the message? It was great! Idon’t know if every Boys’ Brigade officer hasthe opportunity to attend the annual councilmeeting, but I would certainly encourageeveryone to try and attend at least once. Inmany large organisations, religious, politicalor secular, there is always the danger ofalienation between the national governingbody and the “grass roots” who implementthe weekly programme. This can so easilylead to a “them and us” mentality whichhelps no-one and is more likely to inhibit thework rather than enhance it. Churches arenot immune from this feature, as I know onlytoo well from personal experience, havingspent much of the last forty years feelingoften like “piggy in the middle” betweennational policy and local action. It is a huge privilege and responsibility totake part in momentous decisions whichshape an organisation for generations tocome, and in my experience, most churchpeople, including Boys’ Brigade officers, take their duties seriously and act withintegrity. I would say this is true of the vastmajority. Equally, it is no less a privilegeand responsibility to deal with youngpeople on a weekly basis, sometimesmore often, and know that you areshaping lives and communities in yourwords, actions and example. Many years ago, before becoming aminister (when I had a proper job), Iworked on some estimates for rolling stockfor a London Underground extension thathad yet to be dug. From time to time, I get totravel on that route, and even now have justa small twinge of sentiment that I had a smallpart to play in a project that cost millions ofpounds and involved thousands of people. They have yet to put up a blue plaque withmy name on it but I cherish the hope thatit will appear one day (not really). We have a Captain who made it abundantlyclear to his followers and friends, that hedid not come “to be ministered to” but tominister to others. He took up the towel andbasin to wash his disciples’ feet and shortlyafterwards took up the cross and carried ittowards his inevitable death. It is all tooeasy to be precious about our status, ourrights and our contribution. It is muchmore important to follow the example ofour master, to seek to serve and playour part in the whole teameffort of advancingChrist’s Kingdom.by The RevdTerry HurstBrigade Chaplain118 The Boys’ Brigade Gazette October 2008 October 2008 The Boys’ Brigade Gazette 119

GOOD PRACTICEOver the past few years, 1st Haslington has forged close relationswith the Oakhanger Project, a non profit organisation whichoffers a wide range of teamwork and individual activities andadventure courses for all ages with a spiritual element. TheOakhanger Project has links with the community at CrownHaven in the Bahamas which it aims to visit each year.Bahamas 2008GOOD PRACTICEThe Project sets a number ofobjectives to complete by theend of a visit, such as runningactivity days, kayaking for theyoung people of Crown Haven, tohelp rebuild homes after hurricanedevastation, to clean up the litteredarea as there is no landfill collectionservice to the area and to help raiseenvironmental awareness. In early 2007 it was decided that ourcompany and the Oakhanger Projectwould set up an expedition to go to CrownHaven in March 2008. Five Seniors fromthe Company volunteered to take part inthe visit: Ryan Mellor, Phil Wright, JamesWalker, Chris Burrows and Joe Dixon.By January 2008, after many monthsof organising and successful fundraising, everyone was confident that we hadenough money for the visit to takeplace in March.Aims for the trip:• To clear a camping area in CrownHaven and set up for five or six days.• To complete a Beach Tidy with localyoung people to create asafe beach and encourageenvironment awareness.• To assist the local community insetting up a Nature Trail in the PineForest on Little Abaco.• To plan and run a camping expeditionto Cave Cay jointly with the youngpeople of Crown Haven.• To run an Oak Challenge Activity Dayfor the children and young people ofCrown Haven• To raise awareness of self, others andthe environment during the trip. The adventure beginsOn the 26th March, the five Seniors, accompanied by Graham Bushill fromthe Oakhanger Project, John Quigleyand Rob Walker, officers in the 1stHaslington Company, set out on thelong Journey to the Bahamas with anight stop in Miami.Soon after we arrived we preparedfor an activity day for the young peopleof Crown Haven by clearing up theirbeach and gathering materials to makeinto games. We also spent some timepractising our kayaking and navigationskills in preparation for an expeditionlater in the week. Seeing a dolphin whilepractising was a great highlight for theboys during these days.On the Sunday we all attended churchand enjoyed the great hospitalityand welcome from the people ofCrown Haven. It was a delight to seehow Christianity is celebrated in theBahamas. In the afternoon, we ran theactivity day prepared earlier, whichincluded activities such as kayaking, walk the plank, bowls and cross the rivertasks. It was great fun working with theyoung people of the community. The ExpeditionFor the next two days we concentratedon planning our expedition. It wouldinvolve kayaking to an uninhabited islandknown as Smith Cay with supplies andcamping on the island for a night. Wehad to think about a suitable route totake with the kayaks, how much food totake and other necessary items.Well prepared, we set off earlytowards the Cay. Along the way two ofthe leaders capsized accidentally andas a team, we managed to perform asuccessful and impressive rescue. On the Cay, we spent more timekayaking around the island, collectingfirewood and preparing a fire for thedinner. It was an amazing feeling be ona deserted island and to swim in thewarm seas around the Cay. When weleft we looked back at the beauty ofthe Cay.Leisure TimeBack in Crown Haven we enjoyed thehospitality and lifestyle of the people. We had a trip to Hope Town, which ispicturesque and has a beautiful beachand harbour. We saw the oldest and lastremaining kerosene powered lighthousein the world. We were invited to a Barbecue Partyin celebration of our host’s son, Tiko’sBirthday. It was also a party for us on ourlast day there and the whole village wasinvited. We tried the famous Bahamiandish, Conch Fritters – battered seafoodserved with a wonderful pink, butmysterious, sauce. The ExperienceFor us, the trip was an inspiringexperience. We learnt new skills insurvival, kayaking, organising activitiesand became aware of a very differentculture and the poverty of communitiesin the Bahamas. It will encourage us tobe more supportive of projects that willhelp the environment and the quality oflife for people around the world. Thisfundamental knowledge will help us tobe the driving force of change and alsohelp us to become better people in oursociety. We learnt skills of teamworkand leadership as well as buildingstrong friendships. I believe camping inthe Bahamas has been a great way toteach us many skills and to appreciateand be aware that conditions therediffer very much from our own.Ryan Mellor130 The Boys’ Brigade Gazette October 2008 October 2008 The Boys’ Brigade Gazette 131

Global Fellowship:Brigade CanadaThere are probably few BBleaders anywhere in the worldwho can claim to have sharedaccommodation with a dead polarbear while attending a training course.Rita Burrows, National Secretary ofBrigade Canada, is an exception.Whilst recently conducting a trainingsession in Cape Dorset, in Canada’sfar north, the local minister and his wifeexcused themselves to go hunting. Ritareports “15 minutes from the settlementthey stopped at the floe edge. There theminister left his wife and skidoo and set offalong the ice edge. Rebecca (his wife) waslooking about when a polar bear came uponto the ice and, still dripping with water, started sniffing and shuffling from side toside. He was very large. Rebecca calledher husband and dodged down behindthe skidoo, then she lifted her head a littleto see more clearly. He was ambling in herdirection. She lifted the rifle and shot thebear. It took five shots to drop him. He was10 feet long. The bear was skinned andbrought back. We lived with him for severaldays as he was cut up and cooked for acommunity feast.”The Brigade was established in Canadavery soon after its birth in the UK. RevdThomas Fotheringham started the firstCompany in New Brunswick. By the endof 1892, there were18 companiesspread over NovaScotia, Ontarioand Quebec. At its heyday, the Brigadewas strongwith a numberof Battalionsowning theirown premisesand campsites. However, incommon withmany other parts of the world, BrigadeCanada struggled in the second half ofthe twentieth century and numbersdwindled to a handful of companies with100 or so young people in membership. And then the Brigade rose to the challengeof the Arctic...Canada is a vast country so travelrepresents a formidable challenge.Brigade Canada seeks to foster a senseof common identity by setting a commonBible study syllabus for the year so thatgroups of young people in any part ofthe country follow the same devotionalprogramme. Another innovative responseto the sheer size of the country has beenthe formation of the “lone member”scheme. Young people who wish totake part in the Brigade’s activities signup to receive copies of the activitiesand devotional material prepared bythe Brigade by mail. They then pursuethose activities by themselves or withtheir parents in their own setting. “Lonemembers” who live within travellingdistance of others are encouraged to meetup and to pursue the activities together. In recent times, the Brigade has beenundergoing something of a renaissancein the North of the country. This isharsh territory, wherethe temperature can drop as lowas 60 degrees below freezing andtransport is difficult. There are limitedemployment opportunities for youngpeople and violence and drug abuseare widespread. The Bishop of theArctic Diocese recognised the need fora programme which challenged youngpeople and confronts them with theGospel. Responding to his invitation,Rita has travelled to a number ofparishes on Baffin Island and in ArcticQuebec to carry out four-day trainingsessions for volunteers from the localcongregations who wish to be involvedin youth work in their communities andwho have selected the Brigade as theirmeans of doing so.One begins to understand something ofthe distances involved when one considersthat, in Pond Inlet, one of the areas inwhich training took place earlier this year, fresh food (such as fruit, vegetables andmilk) is flown in from Montreal severaltimes a week, a distance of about2,500 km. The costs and difficulties oftravelling are therefore substantial. GlobalFellowship has been supporting the recenttraining programmes in the Arctic andmore are planned for congregations whowish to introduce Brigade work in theWest of the Arctic. The challenges now confronting BrigadeCanada include supporting the newcompanies on Baffin Island and in ArcticQuebec while seeking to make the mostof the new opportunities in the West ofthe Arctic region. And all of that must beachieved while continuing to serve thosecompanies and lone members in theSouth. A Herculean task without havingto meet polar bears…The Palm in Palm project is providing an opportunity for youngpeople to visit the boys and officers of The Boys’ Brigadein Cameroon during the summer of 2009 (dates still to beconfirmed). The trip will involve working alongside localyoung people on their new palm oil farm, running activitiesfor local young people, visiting BB companies and meetingBB delegates from neighbouring West African countries. This opportunity is open to young people throughout the UK involved in BB and aged 18 – 23. You will beexpected to fundraise for the trip in order to make a substantial contribution towards the costs. Your ownBB Company, Battalion and church may be able to help you with costs. If you would like to be part of this exciting visit to the BB in West Africa, then write us a letter.Your letter of application should be no more than two sides and should tell us…• why you would like to go,• why you should be part of the team,• what skills you will bring to the team,• your ideas for fundraising, and• how you plan to feedback yourexperiences to the rest of BB UK.Your letter should be sent to:Palm in Palm Steering Group(Visit to Cameroon 2009)The Boys’ BrigadeFelden LodgeFeldenHemel HempsteadHP3 0BLClosing date for applications is 14th November 2008.The PIP Steering Group will consider all applications and then invite a shortlist of candidates for an informaldiscussion with the Group at Felden Lodge on Saturday 6th December 2008.October 2008 The Boys’ Brigade Gazette 136October 2008 The Boys’ Brigade Gazette 137

But The Boys’ Brigadein Scotland is committed toencouraging young people to talkabout HIV and AIDS, and ChristianAid is helping out.Boys’ Brigade leaders in Johnstone, near Paisley, recently invited ChristianAid to run its HIV Connections peereducation programme at St Andrew’sTrinity Church in Johnstone, where the3rd Johnstone Company is based. Itwas a novel way for the company’s16-year-olds to work towards theQueen’s Badge.Improving awareness‘Having our boys participate in the peereducation course has been importantto them in a number of ways,’ saysStewart Digney, Captain. ‘As well asgiving them new information and somehard-hitting reality to think about, wehope that they will be able to sharewhat they have learned with others inthe wider community.’Through HIV Connections seven16-year-old young men in Johnstonelearned about HIV, how it’s transmitted, its connections with poverty and whyyoung people are more at risk thanadults. They were also challenged totreat HIV as a virus, not a moral issue,as those living with HIV and AIDS are toooften stigmatised and avoided by churchand family members. Some of theinformation was very new to the boys.‘I chose to do this course as I wasunsure about what HIV and AIDS wereand wanted to learn more about them,’said Daniel Stobo. ‘I liked the games weplayed as they were a fun way of givinginformation and making points.’Shock treatmentDaniel described the videos, whichinclude stories of people living with HIVin Africa, as ‘quite shocking’. Daniel’sbrother, Declan, said he had learned‘things he would never have guessed’.He is now going to inform his peersabout HIV and AIDS.October 2008 The Boys’ Brigade Gazette 139Val Brown, youth co-ordinator forChristian Aid Scotland says, ‘We havetrained a couple of Boys’ Brigadegroups in the past 12 months. TheBoys’ Brigade has been very keen toget involved with our peer educationprogramme both locally and nationally.HIV is such an important issue foryoung people to understand, so weare delighted that these groups arestarting to become involved in theproject, using the peer educationproject as a key component in theirQueen’s Badge work.’Spreading the wordStewart Digney is also pleased withthe impact that the peer educationprogramme has made. ‘I have beenimpressed by the mature attitudeour boys have displayed and theirdetermination to ensure that themessage is spread widely.’Dunblane to CrossoverHIV Connections training has also beendone by a group of boys from the 25thStirling Company in Dunblane. Theyhave been active in spreading themessage locally and nationally, as theyworked with the peer educators fromMalawi to present sessions at Crossoverthis year. The boys prepared anddelivered an hour session themselvesand it was very well received by the 40people who attended the workshop.Would your BB company like tobecome involved in the project?
