(Advisers: Elizabeth Kisenwether and RichardSchuhmann)Dhushy Sathianathan, head ofthe School of Engineering Design,Technology, and Professional Programs(SEDTAPP), has accepted the positionof associate dean of academicprograms in the College of Engineeringat the California State University, LongBeach, effective Aug. 24, 2009.Sathianathan first came to Penn StateDhushy Sathianathan as a mechanical engineering graduatestudent in 1984. He earned his master’sdegree in 1986 and his Ph.D. in 1990, while teaching classes parttime. In 1991, he assumed a tenure-track faculty position at theUniversity. He was appointed head of SEDTAPP in 2002, followingthe retirement of former head Wayne Hager.As head of SEDTAPP, Sathianathan provided leadership forengineering and engineering technology programs at PennState campuses throughout the Commonwealth as well as forthe Engineering Design, Engineering Entrepreneurship, andEngineering Leadership Development programs at UniversityPark.Sathianathan has been actively involved in engineering educationinitiatives since 1994. He has led several National ScienceFoundation-funded initiatives, particularly focused on studentretention, to enhance engineering education. He is the co-founderof the Engineering Entrepreneurship Program and the Center forEngineering Design and Entrepreneurship at Penn State. Mostrecently, he has helped implement the new Center for Researchin Design and Innovation that will support an interdisciplinarygraduate program in design studies.During his time at Penn State, Sathianathan has served as theChair of the Penn State Breazeale Nuclear Reactor SafeguardCommittee, Chair of the Faculty Senate–University PlanningCommittee, and Chair-elect for the Engineering TechnologyCouncil in the American Society for Engineering Education(ASEE).He has received the Boeing Outstanding Educator Award, theBoeing Welliver Faculty Fellow Award, and the ASEE DOWOutstanding Faculty Award for his work in engineering education.The School of Engineering Design, Technology and ProfessionalPrograms would like to thank Dhushy Sathianathan for hisdedication, leadership, and friendship over the past 25 years andwish him the best of luck at the California State University, LongBeach.T r a N S I T I O N SJanie Burns, administrative supportand finance assistant, retired onJune 29, 2009, after 19 years ofservice to the School of EngineeringDesign, Technology, and ProfessionalPrograms.Burns started working in thedepartment, formerly the generalengineering department, as a parttimestaff assistant in 1990. In 1991,Janie Burnsher position took a full-time status andgrew into the major financial position it was at the time of herretirement.Jetta McClenahan, formerly a staff assistant for the department,has assumed Burns’ former position.In her retirement, Burns plans to volunteer with various charitiesand organizations as well as continuing to volunteer on the Boardof Directors at her church. She is especially looking forward tospending more time with her five grandchildren.The School of Engineering Design, Technology, and ProfessionalPrograms would like to thank Janie Burns for her many years ofservice and friendship and wishes her the best of luck in the yearsto come.Elizabeth KisenwetherElizabeth Kisenwether, assistantprofessor of engineering design,has stepped down from the positionof director of the EngineeringEntrepreneurship (E-SHIP) Minor.Kisenwether, who has been the directorof the minor since it was founded in2001, will continue to teach engineeringdesign and will be working with theCollege of Engineering to broadenentrepreneurship education acrossPenn State.Philip Boyer, instructor in engineering entrepreneurship, willassume the position of interim director of the E-SHIP Minor.Richard DevonRichard Devon, professor ofengineering design, has stepped downfrom the position of director of theEngineering Design Program. AssistantProfessor of Engineering DesignMatthew Parkinson will assume theposition of director of the EngineeringDesign Program.
