1.0 INTRODUCTIONThe Southern Health and Social Care Trust (Trust) acknowledges and accepts itsresponsibility under the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations (NI) 1982 to ensure thatadequate and appropriate arrangements are made so that First Aid can be rendered toemployees if they are injured or become ill at work.The Trust also acknowledges that due to the nature of its undertaking there is a duty toinclude in such arrangements the assessment/treatment of non-employees such asservice users should they be injured or taken ill whilst on Trust premises.2.0 SCOPE OF PROCEDURAL ARRANGEMENTSThese procedural arrangements apply to all staff working within or on behalf of the Trustwhen dealing with situations where they may need immediate attention.3.0 DEFINITIONS3.1 First Aid at WorkEmployers have a legal duty to make arrangements to ensure their employeesreceive immediate attention if they are injured or become ill at work. It is importantto give them immediate attention and call an ambulance in serious cases whetherthe injury or illness is caused by the work they do or not. First aid at work coversthe arrangements that need to be made to manage injuries or illnesses suffered atwork.3.2 First Aider at Work (FAW)An individual who has attended a three day HSENI approved training courseand holds a valid certificate of competence in First Aid at work (refer to Appendix1.0).3.3 Emergency First Aider at Work (EFAW)An individual who has attended an approved one day Emergency First Aid atWork course, and hold a valid certificate of competence. EFAW training enablesthe First Aider to give emergency First Aid to someone who is injured orbecomes ill (refer to Appendix 2.0).4.0 RESPONSIBILITIES4.1 Director of Human Resources and Organisational DevelopmentThe Chief Executive has appointed the Director of Human Resources andOrganisational Development as the identified Lead person for Health and Safetywithin the Trust.
