2011 NEWBERRY WOLVES GAME NOTES GAME TWO • at Valdosta State • Sept. 8ONE IF BY LAND... SEVEN IF BY AIR• Newberry quarterback Bryan Ehrlich became the sixth quarterback in Newberry historyto throw four touchdown passes in a single game with his four touchdown strikesin the win against Livingstone.• Ehrlich repeated the feat in the loss at Samford on Sept. 16, as well as the BishopsTrophy victory over Lenoir-Rhyne on Oct. 2.• Ehrlich set the school record for touchdown passes in a game with seven TD completionsat Tusculum. That is also a new record for the South Atlantic Conference.• Ehrlich threw for three touchdowns in the first quarter against Livingstone, whichties him with Josh Stepp for a school record for touchdown passes in a quarter, as Steppthrew three TD strikes in the third quarter of the playoff win over Albany State in 20061. He met theNCAA requirements for returns per game (a minimum of 1.2 returns per game), but onlyplayed in 7 of 10 games, while the NCAA requires a 75% participation rate. The mostyards by a “per game” season champion was 881.NEW FACES IN THE CROWD...• Newberry lost many familiar faces on the defensive side of the ball, and talentedplayers without much game experience will have to step up and make plays to get theseason off on the right foot.• Five players in the two-deep on defense had not played in a Newberry uniform prior toNGU, while one outside linebacker spot will guarantee a starter plays in just his secondgame in the scarlet and gray, as Edmond Robinson and A.J. Booker had not played forNewberry before last week.• John Gadson played in his first game for Newberry, and is slated to start at runningback. The talented sophomore was impressive in the 2011 Spring Game and preseasonscrimmages and picked up 65 yards rushing on 17 carries in his debut, including anelectrifying 28-yard rush on his first career touch....WITH A BIT OF THE FAMILIAR• Gadson’s backup - Alkeem Sherman - is a bit of a statistical anomaly. He is the onlyplayer on the roster who has played in all 31 of the games he’s been on the roster for. However, he’s only started in one of those games.• Center Chase Gamble has switched positions from right tackle to center, a positionhe’d played in once in the previous two years, as he filled in for an injured Matt Holmesin the record-breaking win over Tusculum last year. Gamble is the team leader in starts,as he has started every game in the 2009, 2010 and 2011 seasons, for 21 starts. Fellowoffensive linemen Benji Inabinet (20) and Lequawn James (18) and wide receiverBrandon Bostick (18) are the other offensive start leaders.• Inside linebacker and team captain Apollo Stretch has 18 career starts for Newberry, leading the defense. He is one of four defensive players with double digit starts, as defensivetackle Arterio Arnold, defensive end Eli Charles and outside linebacker KeltonHall each started in all 10 of last season’s games and the season opener. No other defensiveplayer has more than seven starts.HEY ARNOLD!• Defensive tackle Arterio Arnold has been named a preseason All-American byD2Football.com and Lindy’s magazine.• Arnold, a 6-foot-2, 300-lbs. junior from Greenville, was also Newberry’s only preseasonfirst team all-South Atlantic Conference honoree. Arnold was a second team all-SouthAtlantic Conference selection in 2010 after leading the conference in tackles for loss pergame, with 1.4 stops behind the line of scrimmage per game. He had 72 total tackles in2010, with 14 tackles for loss, three sacks and nine quarterback hurries. He notched acareer-high 13 tackles against Carson-Newman.www. The game willkick off at 7 p.m. Thursday on CSS and other GSC-TV affiliates. North Greenville (1-0)travels to Presbyterian next week.NGU controlled the clock on offense, with 35:44 of possession to Newberry’s24:14, allowing the Crusaders to pick up 273 rushing yards and a total of 459 yards.Newberry managed just 201 yards of offense. For the Wolves, running back John Gadson (North Charleston, S.C.) carried theball 17 times for 65 yards in his collegiate debut. Bryan Ehrlich (San Antonio, Texas)completed 14-of-38 passes for 104 yards, but was picked off four times.Preseason All-American defensive end Arterio Arnold (Greenville, S.C.) returneda fumble three yards for his first career touchdown, forced a fumble and had six totaltackles, while Apollo Stretch (Columbia, S.C.) led all players with 12 total tackles. The game got off to an inauspicious start for Newberry, who took the field withhigh levels of enthusiasm, but Ehrlich’s pass on the first play from scrimmage wastipped up into the air and intercepted by North Greenville safety Nick Rosamonda(Debary, Fla.), who returned it for a touchdown to give the Crusaders an early 7-0 lead.Newberry responded well though, as Gadson carried the ball 28 yards on his firsttouch to start off an eight-play, 39-yard drive which was capped off by a 36-yard NickKinney (Goose Creek, S.C.) field goal to make it 7-3.North Greenville’s offense proceeded to put together long drives of 12, six and16 plays, but the Wolves’ defense held tight and did not allow a score on any of those.A missed field goal, an NGU punt and a goal line stand inside the Newberry 1-yardlineNewberry tried to strike quickly before the end of the half, but Ehrlich’s pass onthe first play was intercepted by Jereme Green (Debary, Fla.), and Korn found SeanWright (Simpsonville, S.C.) for a 39-yard touchdown pass on the next play to give NGUa sudden 21-3 halftime lead. The Crusaders received the opening kickoff and extended the lead quickly ona 38-yard option touchdown run by Teryan Rucker (Gainesville, Ga.) less than threeminutes into the second half to make it 28-3. Ehrlich was picked off once again on thirddown, and NGU needed just four plays to make it 34-3 after a Korn 21-yard touchdownpass to Freddie Martino (North, S.C.).After a Newberry punt, NGU drove into Newberry territory again, but Eli Charles(Green Cove Springs, Fla.) fell on a fumble to give the Wolves the ball. Unfortunately, things got worse in the quarter, as a poor snap on a punt attempt went into the endzonefor an NGU safety to make it 36-3 in the Crusaders’ favor. A Justin Gravely (Pickens,S.C.) 25-yard field goal would make NGU’s lead 39-3 by the end of the period.Things started to look up in the fourth quarter for the Wolves. Ehrlich was interceptedon a fourth down play at the Newberry 2-yardline, and with the Crusaderspinned near their own endzone, Brandon McCall (Sumter, S.C.) forced a fumble in thebackfield which Arnold recovered and went three yards into the endzone for the touchdownto make it 39-10.Newberry’s Brandon Miller (Manning, S.C.) intercepted backup quarterback Aaron Siegler (Jacksonville, Fla.) at the NGU 43-yardline and Newberry marched 43 yards downfield in eight plays and made it 39-17 on an Alkeem Sherman (Conway,S.C.) 1-yard touchdown run.NGU capped the night’s scoring with a nine-play, 72-yard drive ended by a Marcus Wilson (Macon, Ga.) 2-yard touchdown run.www. Newberry travels to Division I-FCS opponent Samford(1-1) for a Thursday night contest in Birmingham, Ala., while VSU hostsDelta State on Saturday, Sept. 18.Valdosta State got on the board first on an 11-yard quarterback keeperby Brett Whitmire (Jacksonville, Fla.) with 9:02 left in the first quarter. Histouchdown score was set up by a 75-yard rush by David Arnold (Adel, Ga.) onwhich the VSU running back eluded multiple tackles before being broughtdown.Newberry answered with a Britt Blackmon (Kershaw, S.C.) 31-yardfield goal on the next drive to make it a 7-3 game after an 8-play, 57-yarddrive.Neither team would score again in the first quarter, and Newberrywould take the lead on its third drive of the second period. After a botchedVSU snap was recovered by Newberry’s Andre Clark (Rock Hill, S.C.) at theBlazer 40, Newberry quarterback Bryan Ehrlich (San Antonio, Texas) scoredon a 6-yard quarterback keeper to make it 10-7 in the Wolves’ favor afterthe PAT. However, the Blazers would immediately answer with an impressive39-yard touchdown pass from Whitmire to Gerald Ford (Harvey, La.) tomake it 14-10.Valdosta State turned the pressure up in the rest of the half, as threeconsecutive Newberry drives ended in interceptions, with one in the Blazers’endzone. The Newberry defense stood strong though, and only allowedthree points on those miscues, with Daniel Andersen (Meansville, Ga.) connectingon a 27-yard field goal to make it 17-14 in Valdosta State’s favorat the half. The Blazers scored first in the second half on a 15-yard touchdownpass from Whitmire to Jackson Dean (Loganville, Ga.). On the Blazers’ nextdrive, Whitmire was flushed from the pocket and attempted to throw theball away, but Newberry’s All-American safety Ron Parker (St. Helena Island,S.C.) made a tip-toe interception on the sideline to give the Wolves the ballat the Valdosta 41.Newberry needed just four plays to convert that turnover into pointsand Ehrlich’s 3-yard touchdown pass to Brandon Bostick (Florence, S.C.)made it a 24-17 deficit with 3:37 left in the third quarter.Untimely Newberry penalties assisted the Blazers on a 13-play, 89-yard scoring drive that spanned into the third quarter and changed themomentum of the game. Newberry made a stop on third-and-long that wasnegated by a personal foul and Valdosta proceeded to march down the fieldand made it a 31-17 game on a 19-yard Whitmire-to-Dean touchdown pass. The Wolves allowed their only two sacks of the night on the next drive andNewberry’s final three drives of the second half also ended in turnovers and a 65-yard scoring pass from Austen Roberts (Lake Butler, Fla.) to Griffin Roelle (Marietta, Ga.) provided the final margin.Valdosta State outgained Newberry 490 yards to 324 and forced six turnovers, while Newberry only forced two turnovers. The Blazer attack was balanced with 239 yards on the ground and 251 yards through the air.Newberry rushed for 94 yards and passed for 230 yards.David Pressley (Anderson, S.C.) was the Wolves’ statistical leader with nine receptions for 114 yards, his second consecutive season passing the century mark against VSU. With that yardage, he now has 905 career receivingyards and is on the way to becoming yet another 1,000-yard career receiver for Newberry. Bostick had eight catches for 91 yards and a touchdown.Ehrlich was 22-of-45 through the air for 230 yards and a touchdown, but was picked off five times, with three coming on deflected balls. Dion Bryant (Crawfordville, Fla.) was the leading rusher with 44 yards on 15carries.Nick Kinney (Goose Creek, S.C.) punted nine times for a 41.7 yard average, with two punts inside the 20-yardline and a long of 54 yards. Blackmon was once again perfect in his place-kicking duties, making a field goaland both PAT attempts.Apollo Stretch (Columbia, S.C.) led the Wolves with 10 tackles, while Parker had nine tackles and an interception. Arterio Arnold (Greenville, S.C.) had seven tackles and a sack, while the team tallied eight quarterbackhurries. VSU linebacker Larry Dean (Tifton, Ga.) had a career-high 17 stops.
