This is the definition which willinclude all natural religion, and present theground of its defence in view of scientificsuggestions and perplexities.But taking the Christian religion as thecrown and centre of religious life in theworld, we have a more full and commandingtestimony as to the glory of the divine nature,and the genuine exercises of a religious life.He is God creating and sustaining all, rulingin righteousness, revealing himself in JesusChrist, whose glory is "the glory as of the onlybegotten of the Father full of grace and truth."He is a God seeking the reconciliation of theguilty with himself'. He is a God of mercy,calling all intelligent creatures to fellowshipwith him, and requiring them all to be "holyeven as he is holy." Such is a summary ofthe teaching of Scripture as to the DivineBeing, and our relation to him. Thus are weguided in our utterance before him, " 0 Lordof hosts, God of Israel, that dwellest betweenthe cherubim, thou art the God, even thoualone, of all the kingdoms of the earth: thouhast made heaven and earth " (Is%. xxxvii. 16).
