SCIENCE AND DIVINE INTERPOSITION. 283lous testimony to the divinity of our Saviour, and habitual answer to the prayer offered toGod by those who approach Him in the meritof the Redeemer, are consistent with theteaching of science. These two conceptionsare naturally included in the one question asto the compatibility with the laws of natureof the interposition of supernatural agencyfor attainment of moral and spiritual ends inthe history of the world.First in order stands the question of MIR-ACLE as involved in the evidence of divinepower and authority given by our Lord, duringHis sojourn in this world to accomplishthe great work of redemption," The testimonyof miracle as presented in the historicalnarrative of Christ's life is frequent and abundantin variety; and its connection with Hiswork for the redemption of sinful men is everywhereproclaimed. It is impossible tocontemplate the scriptural testimony to theglory of Christ's nature without includingmiracle as a conspicuous part of it ; and it isequally impossible to detach this testimony* The limits of the present discussion make it impossible toinclude a wider range; but this really embraces the whole questionof the miracles of Scripture.

It thus becomes an essential testof the validity of Christian evidence to settlethe compatibility of miracle with the knowledgenow possessed of the laws of nature. It is not necessary here to discuss the credibilityof miracles, as affected by the questionwhether there can be sufficiency of testimonyto support the occurrence of a miracle,-aquestion which has engaged an amount of attentiondisproportionate to its intellectualworth. The suggestion of the question wasnothing better than an example of misleadingingenuity, allowed to stand on the page onwhich it was indited in manifest violation ofthe laws of evidence and the essential conditionsof human knowledge. The value of testimonydoes not depend on the nature of thething to which it applies, but on the characterof the witness, and the opportunity for observingand testing the facts described.
