METEDECONK RIVER YACHT CLUBVolume 28, Issue 6Smoke Signalswww.metedeconkriveryc.orgJULY 2008Commodore’s LogJune has been a great month:Our evening regattas are in full swing, the BBYRA Champion of ChampionsRegatta was hosted at our club with greatsuccess (nice westerly winds, light powerboat traffic, but I lost money on John); thestormy weather didn’t dampen spirits atthe Commodores Cocktail Party (thanksagain Kathy), we met our new membersat a welcome coffee (thanks Anne), we allgained weight at the Fathers day Brunch(thanks Mermates) and our Juniors are offand running (literally, if they are membersof our new Traveling team). If you haven’tbeen participating in our events, youare missing out. Go to our website toreview our calendar to see what is in storefor the future – and watch for those peskyemails from the Commodorefor the latest ondinners and other clubhappenings. Speakingof the future, read on inthis issue for information about the planningthat is taking place for the AndrewBrennan sailing center. This project willbe 100% funded by donations and is inmemory of Andrew Brennan, a wonderfulsailor and human being who lost hislife in a tragic automobile accident.Significant funding has already beenpledged, preliminary designs have beendrawn up, and a fantastic fundraiser isbeing planned. Finally, I have some housekeepingitems that may well be repeatedby our officers. 1. Our club is busy, space is at a premium, and sailboat racingis our priority. If you are visiting theclub by water, please do not tie up at thefloating dock area or under our hoistswhen a sailing event is taking place(which is quite frequent in season). It isunsafe and against club policy. 2. Ourdry slip space is at a premium. Please donot move anyone’s boat from its restingplace without consulting the boat’s ownerand first consulting with our Fleet Captain.Believe it or not, there is somemethod to our madness and we need everyone’scooperation to maximize the useof our space. 3. Your Officers and Committeefolk have been working very hardto ensure a successful season. Please takea moment when you see them and thankthem for the hard work they are contributingto our club. I am honored to be supportedby such a dedicated group of individualsand I hope you will join me insupporting them as they accomplish theirtasks!See you on the water,Eric WagnerADREW BREA MEMORIAL FUD JUMPSTARTS JUIOR SAILIGAndrew Brennan shared an inexplicableconnection with the water. Onany given summer day, he could be foundon the water, instructing his crew membersto trim the jib a little more, or hoistthe spinnaker a little faster. He wouldteach green fleeters how to ride the windsto victory, or how to make square knotsand fold a sail perfectly. Sailing was hispassion. He was not only a championsailor, he was a friend to all that knewhim, eager to sail whenever he could, withwhomever would let him.A car accident tragically cut hislife short in January of 2005. His familyestablished the Andrew Brennan MemorialFund to not only honor Andrew’smemory but also to give back to MetedeconkRiver Yacht Club, a place where theBrennan family shares friendships andfond memories. The Brennan family iscommitted to those who hold the key toMRYC’s sailing legacy: the Junior membersof Metedeconk River Yacht Club. With this in mind, the idea of a JuniorSailing Center was born. A buildingwhere young sailors can learn, and havefun with fellow club members, and Juniorsailors from our sailing community.Fellow club member and talented architectGreg Arner has generously designeda simple, yet functional building—a perfectcombination of aesthetics and purpose. While this goal may seem ambitious,we currently have commitmentsfor approximately 50% of the cost of thisinitiative: $28,000 in initial donations,$20,000 from the Brennan family, and$10,000 pledged by long time club memberJim Carson for a total of $58,000.This tragic event has inspired a uniqueopportunity for MRYC which the Boardof Trustees and Executive Committeehave enthusiastically embraced. It is theintent for the center to be a donor-fundedproject. As such, you will see severalinitiatives beginning this summer to raisethe balance of the funds to complete ournew Junior Sailing Center. Watch futureissues of Smoke Signals, our website andemails for further information. The MRYC Mermates will behosting its “1 st Ever Junior Program Reunion”on August 23 with 100 percent ofthe proceeds to be donated towards thecenter. This fun event for our 21 and oldercrowd will bring together past, presentand parents of future Junior members, friends, and families all for a good cause.Additional fundraising activities include asilent auction, live auction and “Buy aBrick” campaign. Together, we can makethe MRYC Junior Sailing Center a reality.

If you do have an issue, please go to one of our committee ormyself. Do not bring it up to our instructorsand coaches. That is our job. Ifyou email me with your problem, and allyour contact information, I promise areturn call or email. I commute an hourand a half in the morning and evening, and I’m looking for something to do. Ianticipate a great year in both swimmingand sailing, with minimal issues. Ourprogram this year is bigger, expanded, and our goal is to have it be the best JuniorProgram ever. Thank you to my hardworking committee. Hundreds of manhourshave gone into this, all on a volunteerbasis. Home swim meets in July areon the 9 th and the 23rd. Contact Terri Gelenitisto pick the date that’s best for youas soon as possible.Rick Haupt has the bar runninglike a top. I especially like the new formatof the bar invoices. It is the onlything I get in the mail I can read withoutmy glasses. The new register is workingout great, and we have our additionalcooling station installed, which shouldinsure we have cold beer running on thewarmest of days. Personally, after two orthree drinks it doesn’t make any difference.Well that’s about it. The nexttime I write will be for August’s edition. At that point I feel my job is almost over.Whatever happens at that point, it’sprobably too late to do anything to fix it,but I will be sure to happily tell nextyear’s Vice Commodore all about it. Itwas a long winter to get to this point, withall the programs that had to come together, and they did. Now that we areunderway, go with the flow and have aball!Rick EytelVice Commodore

Volume 28, Issue 6Smoke SignalsRear Commodore’s CommentsHE’S BACK…Page 3The season has started! By thetime you read this it will probably be Julyand the club will be in full swing. Anchoredby our Club Manager Al B and histrusted assistant Luke, we are doing everythingwe can to keep up day-to-day.The pool area is looking good thanks toour pool chairman, Pete Zanowic. Newstones are down, new furniture has beenpurchased and the existing furniture waspower washed. Our goal is to have peoplewalk by the pool and say “Boy, that looksnice!”As mentioned in my previousarticle, the recycling program has startedat the club. I wish I could report stunningresults, but quite frankly we have a lot ofwork to do as a membership when itcomes to recycling. The only way for thisto work is if we all chip in and do ourpart. We don’t have the staff to sort garbagefrom the recycling bins whenFROM THE TOP OF THE MASTA NOTE FROM THE FLEET CAPTAIN :Summer 2008 is here!! I wouldlike to begin by thanking the membersthat have assisted with the duties ofFLEET CAPTAIN.All boats on club property musthave MRYC ID stickers on the port stern.Contact me if you need MRYC ID stickers. If not, I will be sharpening my waxpencil.... Empty trailers must be off clubproperty. Please keep the property clean. If you see garbage in the area pick it upand throw it away.PATROLS : Sign up to patrolour races on the Fleet Captain’s sign-up“foreign” objects end up in the dedicatedrecycling bins. Take the time to considerwhich bin is garbage and which isrecycling. Let’s start easy and just worryabout bottles (usually beer bottles) andplastic bottles (like water bottles) fornow. Everything else in the garbagecans. We have recycling containers outsideby the clubhouse and also upstairs. They are clearly marked with the recyclinglogo. I appreciate your help.My final request is that we allpitch in to help keep the club groundsclean and free of trash. Specifically inthe dry sail area, please clean up thegrounds around your boat and if you arewalking through the area and have theability to pick something up and throw itout, please do so. Every little bit helps.Jody LutzRear Commodoresheets in the clubhouse. We need twopatrol boats with two people on eachboat for most of our races. Page 6 Smoke Signals Volume 28, Issue 6Catboat Fleet NewsThe Spring Series for the Sanderlingand Sandpiper fleets was completedon June 1 in rather windy conditions. In fact, most of the races wereboarderline when our 18 mph limits areconsidered. Turnout in the Sanderlingfleet was small. Only 4 boats registeredwith one Metedeconk boat. The serieswas won by Mark Schlekser from LavalletteYacht Club with Bob Adams(BHYC) and Charlie Barclay(BHYC)finishing 2 nd and 3 rd , respectively. TwelveSandpipers registered for the series butonly 8 qualified due to a variety of schedulingdifficulties. It was a good shakedownseries as there was a broken mast, gaff bolt failure, and other problemswhich were corrected before the championshipseries start. Paul Gelenitis, withsome help from George Francis, finishedfirst narrowly beating his brother JimGelenitis by 2 points. Dan Hurley(MYC) was 3 rd followed by MimiDimon in 4 th and John Schwind in 5 th .The Thursday Evening Championshipseries began on June 5 with 7Sanderlings and 11 Sandpipers enjoyinga light weather race in a dying ESEwind. Bill Bogardus won in the Sanderlingfleet and John Schwind had a hugelead and won in the Sandpiper fleet. Weexpect several additional boats in bothfleets as the series progresses. With thelack of motorboat wakes and usuallyreliable winds it’s a great time to sail. Our Sunday Championshipraces began on June 22 at 11:00 A.M.Hopefully we can get a good turnout inboth classes and maybe the high cost ofgas will dampen the boat traffic a little. We now have twenty two (22)Sandpipers at our club. That’s a greatfleet and will probably grow more in thefuture. The only problem now is space inthe dry storage area. Fifteen now haveassigned spots but locating space for additionalboats will challenge our Club FleetCaptain Janice Baier – but it’s a goodproblem to have. The BBYRA Championship ofChampions was held in Sandpipers atMetedeconk on Sunday, June 8. More ofthis regatta will be found in the RegattaCommittee report. The regatta was a greatshowcase for the Sandpiper fleet andshould generate further interest in theseboats.John CuttingWOME’S WET WEDESDAYSIt’s not too late to join Women’sWet Wednesdays (WWW) and sail withus on Wednesday evenings.
