Once there, my informantsshow me a hole in the ground close to the entrancesill. This is where they used to behead the priests theyexplain. To protect themselves, the priests used to hidein the water behind the wall on the right side of theicon. Eirinē and Panagiotis are eager to share theirbeliefs and interpretations with me and teach me moreabout the caves. According to them, an ancient column,situated in the middle of the ground floor, served asthe “holy table (see Plate 1), and has relics from saintsinside! 19 Panagiotis emphasizes that formerly thischurch had a “greater church above,” and (the emperor)Constantine built it. Accordingly, the church dedicatedto the Life-giving Spring was part of the largeByzantine Church-complex covering an extended area.He shows another picture of Ephraim, the monk whowas burned on May 5, 1426. May 5 is now an annualholiday, celebrating the saint in the monastery that isdedicated to him. “There he lays in a silver-coffin andover his relics is the Byzantine banner decorated withthe two eagles.” In the cave are many icons (cf. Plate 1)as well as many votive offerings.While talking about icons, my informants recount apopular belief among many Greeks that the holy iconon Tinos is the work of the Evangelist, Luke. Theysay when King Paul became ill his family bestowed allthe gold and precious stones that cover the icon. Theicon in the cave dedicated to the Life-giving Springwas made in 1917, and shows, according to Panagiotis,“how the water was turned on formerly, when there wasa fountain here.” 20Upon our departure, Eirinē wishes my mother andme “Happy Easter” and adds, as most faithful Greeksdo, “Happy Resurrection” (Kalē Anestasē).“New” Friday in the “White Week”: TheCelebration of the Life-giving SpringEaster celebrations in Greece last throughout theweek that follows Easter Sunday. The first week afterEaster is known as the “White Week” or the “BrightWeek.” (Lamprē signifies both bright and Easterin Greek). On New Friday in the White Week, theGreeks commemorate the Virgin Mary under herattribute of Zōodochos Pēgē, the Life-giving Spring.The festival is a part of the spring festivals, whichare celebrated during the first week after Easter. Inseveral places, on this day, there are special servicesand processions followed by folk dances. 21 In Athens,the festival is celebrated in the church dedicated tothe Life-giving Spring, which is situated inside thearchaeological site of the Athenian Acropolis.In 1992, the Friday after Easter coincided withMay 1, which is the annual Workers Day. 22 This is alsoa general holiday also for the guards working at theAcropolis area. Approximately two months before theEaster celebration, some guards told me they believedofficials might close the entire Acropolis area on May1, which would prevent pilgrims from visiting the LifegivingSpring on the feast day.It remained unclear for some time whether the“holiday of the workers,” a more secular celebration,would win out over the religious celebration, whichis rooted in the traditional customs and value systemsof the common people. 23 Both festivals represent thepeople, but one is related to a modern and Westernorientednationalist ideology while the other representsPlate 5: The priest packs up his briefcase, situated inthe middle of the altar, in the church dedicated to theLife-giving Spring at Athens (author photograph).
