Medpark is a pretty decent place. Nothing great, nothing to complain about. I think it is the perfectaverage housing for the incoming student. No pet policy. This isn't a good place to live if you like to have a lot of people over for social gatherings(football games, grilling, swimming, etc) because most people that live here are families with children. These folks are usually asleep by 10pm. No alcohol at the pool. Pretty quiet after 10-11pm in general. It's also a bit pricey. You could move a little farther away (especially for a person like me, who doesn'tattend class but does video streaming) for a cheaper price. Other than that the management is great.Respond instantly to problems in your apt. Friendly people and if you want the quiet familyenvironment (which I find nice and peaceful) it's a great place to live.*************************************************************************************5225 Maple Avenue5225 Maple AvenueDallas, TX 75235-8195(214) 634-5225http://www.5225mapleapts.com/Distance:

times just to get in); super safe building! Tons of medical students and resident physicians in thebuilding! Great place!Eon is awesome and it's environmentally friendly. It's a great place to live!Eon is brand new and a pretty posh place to live for a medical student. There are several people in myclass living here. It is walkable to the MedPark apartments for you class party goers. There is a 24hrfitness center, pool, dog park, rentable party room ($100/night), 3 gas grills. Parking (for now) is free ina gated garage. Pets are allowed, although for a monthly fee - I'm paying $20/mo for two cats. It is~3min drive to the student parking lot at UTSW. I have zero complaints about this place except for theprice: $1250/mo not including utilities for a 711sq/ft 1BR would be well out of my budget if I did nothave a sugar momma aka fiancé living with me. I would avoid a pool view unit - a classmate of minewho has one says it gets loud sometimes, although the pool does close at night. We are very close tothe Love Field take-off/landing path, which I had worries about when moving in, but I have never beenbothered by noise in my 1st floor unit. I believe 2BRs are in the $1400/mo range. There are a smallnumber of studios too. I like the location since it is insanely close to school but there aren't anywalkable restaurants/bars in the area. There is a high chance I will renew my lease but now that I ammore familiar with Dallas I will at least look for cheaper options.*************************************************************************************IMT Seville2626 Reagan StreetDallas, TX 75219(855) 206-2746http://www.imtresidential.com/imtsevilleuptown#ViewDistance: 5-10 minutesRent: $750 to > $1200Bedrooms: 1-3Security features: security gates, intrusion alarm, patrolSatisfaction with housing:I am happy with my choice and wouldlive here again.I would recommend this housing to anMS0.Strongly Agree Agree Neutral Disagree StronglyDisagree3 2 0 0 03 2 0 0 0I would recommend this housing to1 4 0 0 0women for safety purposes. My housing choice is family friendly. 1 2 2 0 0My housing choice is pet friendly. 2 2 1 0 0My housing choice has easy access topublic transportation.1 1 2 1 0Additional comments:I have lived here all 4 years of medical school, both by myself and with a roommate. Youwill, however, pay a large price in terms of having to deal with the management. Everyone who worksthere presents themselves as very approachable and reasonable, but as soon as you sign a lease andbecome a tenant, they are abrasive and inflexible. Over the course of my three years there, I got intoinnumerable arguments with them about unfair treatment. It is cheap, but they will find ways to nickeland dime you for really dumb things. Although I did live here for the bulk of my time at UTSW, I did sobecause I moved in during my MS1 year and did not want the hassle of moving all of my stuff again. I100% do NOT recommend this apartment complex for anyone. The administration and maintenance at Inwood on the Parks can be frustrating at times. Also, largemail packages are not accepted at the mail box, so you would need to drive out to the USPS office topick up your mail.-The staff is fairly responsive about responding to requests -If is the shortest commute possible toschool, which makes it nice if you want to pop home to grab something and is easier to convinceyourself to go study at school -Check out the "in-town" rates, which students should qualify forThey don't really fix things when you need it. The gate is broken a lot. It costs $100 per year to park inthe parking garage. Many students and grad students do live here and find it convenient to walk acrossto North Campus or take the shuttle to South Campus.Walking distance to North Campus (from where you can take a shuttle to South Campus), easy accessto Dallas Nightlife. Be preparedfor traffic around 9am and 5pm. Free coffee 24/7 in the lobby is nice, but not a game changer. Fromwhat I've heard from other students, your living experience at northend is highly dependent on whichbuilding your apartment is in. Management took a long time to get all my leasing documents prepared,so make sure you stay on top of things.great value for nice facility and good locationI wanted to live in an apartment community that was not too close to school since I spend a lot of timein school anyways. The apartment community is right in between the American Airlines Center and thenew Perot Museum of Natural History. It is right next to Woodall Rodgers Hwy which connects to 75 &35 E. In addition, it is a 10-15 minute walk to the dining and nightlife of McKinney avenue, and a 5

minute walk to the House of Blues/ Hard Rock Cafe locations. School is about a 10 minute drive. Thecommunity provides amenities that include trash pickup, dry cleaning pickup (a little expensive), a gym,a great pool, and even a masseuse on call! Though right in the uptown/ downtown area, parking is notan issue. They even have guest parking available. I usually shop for groceries at the Kroger near schoolor at Target at Lemmon/75 which is a 5 minute drive. The community has a gated entrance with aguard manning the gate in the nights. However, the security is not exactly top notch. I have seen thegate left open on more than one occasion with the guard either busy or absent. The area is relativelysafe and I have not had to deal with issues of security, but the management keeps sending crime watchalerts once every few months, so this may be something to consider. In addition, if you have anapartment facing the street, you may have to deal with the sights and sounds of traffic which may get alittle loud during game days at the AAC. However, the apartments in the interior of the community area lot quieter. Northend offers in-town housing for people who do not make a lot of money whichbrings the rent down for a single bedroom apartment to about $923. This price went up recently andmay not change much over the next few years. Add another $35 - $40 for water/trash/valet pick upetc. This may not be the greatest deal around, but compared to a lot of other apartments in the area, this is pretty good. The community offers a number of floor plans for single, double and double + studytype apartments, so having a roommate or two might bring the rent down by a considerable amount.Overall, Northend is a decent apt community. I like living here and would gladly recommend it.Loud, lots of "young professionals" that like to party. NO WAY you can study at home on weekends.North End is filled with young professionals. I don't see too many families living there though. The DART is maybe a 5 minute walk from the gate. Easy access to museums, aquarium, and Katy trail.Literally right next door to the brand new Perot Museum of Nature and Science.Things within walking distance: a new park above the freeway, a new science museum, AmericanAirlines center, Dallas aquarium, tons of restaurants and bars, more. It can get slightly noisy on theweekends since there are so many young people but it's never been problem. It's about a 25 minutecommute for me door to door, but I would say 70% of that time is walking to my car, leaving theparking garage, going from the entrance to the school campus to park in the garage, walking from carto class, etc. And I love being able to drive into the city after class every day. Plus, I can walk to thatpark in like 3 minutes. Rent is on par with Med Park and other areas students live, I pay ~$1500 for 2br/2 ba. Big living room area in the double and kitchen is nice. Be sure to ask about in town housingfor a big discount, but ask early.*************************************************************************************Villas at Katy Trail3200 Maple AvenueDallas, TX 75201(877) 758-8563http://www.villasatkatytrail.com/Distance: 5-10 minutesRent: < $700 to > $1150Bedrooms: 1-3Security features: security gates, security guard, intrusion alarm, patrolSatisfaction with housing:I am happy with my choice and would livehere again.StronglyAgreeAgree Neutral Disagree StronglyDisagree2 1 1 0 0

Then pick your living stylebased on your study hours and outside activities.I had to drive around the neighborhoods just north of the medical center to find my house, as it wasonly advertised with a sign in the yard.I lived in apartments closer to school during my first year while I was still figuring things out. It workedout well and gave me time to decide how close to school I wanted to be and what neighborhood Iwanted to live in.I love living in Oak Lawn (right on the border of Highland Park), but the best way to find availablehousing in this area is to drive around and respond to lawn signs (unfortunately).I strongly recommend exploring Dallas and venturing outside of the typically popular large apartmentcomplexes among med students. I think you will find the rent can be cheaper and they are in nicerparts of Dallas. For me it’s worth driving an extra five minutes to school to be able walk tobars/restaurants that I like.My first year I didn't want to risk living with someone I didn't know and I didn't know the area verywell, so I chose to live in a studio at Inwood on the Park. It was fine, but I wouldn't want to do it formore than a year. After I became familiar with Dallas and got to know my classmates, I found a houseto rent close by with 2 of my friends and am paying almost $150/month less than I was living alone. There are lots of great little duplexes and condos and houses for rent in the Oak Lawn/Highland Parkneighborhood right behind the Whole Foods on Lemmon. My husband and I have loved theneighborhood feel and the ability to go on walks down tree-lined streets! Our place is definitely olderand has a very homey, old fashioned character to it, which we love! It is also pretty spacious for theprice. So far, we feel like it is a really safe area! Lots of people out walking their dogs, baby strollers, etc! If you are interested, just start driving around and calling the numbers on the "for rent" signs. Really great if you want to be a littlefarther away from the school! This place has a 2-story townhouse for only $875 a month (and that pricewas for a 6-month lease). It's a very small complex and very close toschool. It's not in the nicest area, but you're not going to get a price likethis in uptown or oak lawn. I've always felt relatively safe, and due to thelayout of the complex you can literally park outside your door so thereisn't much walking needed. Complaints: the internet -was- inconsistentand shoddy, however, the complex performed repairs recently after theentire complex lost connection and it's been fairly stable since. HOWEVER,if you care about these sorts of things, YOU CAN ONLY GET DSL. No cableinternet. This is the main reason I am moving out. When we first movedin there was also a bit of a cockroach problem but the roach killer things inthe corners worked perfectly so we don't have them anymore. Also, they(the apt managers) do allow towers to scan their parking lots for peoplewith expired stickers so they (the towing company) can tow them, so makesure your stuff is up to date!! It is ideal for families desiring to live onloans alone. One drawback is that it is not super nice. It is very ordinary;there is no crown molding, etc. There is a train station 1-2 minutes away. There is a park across the street with a pond and lots of ducks, geese, nutria etc.Ilume is expensive, but the accommodations do reflect the price. Though Iam not dissatisfied, I am moving in order to be able to save money. Not sure this would be a viable option for MS0 since it requires knowingthe condo owner or buying a condo.I like uptown for the proximity to the Katy trail and ability to walk toshopping, restaurants, and bars.Good for married couple with a little extra income but needed more space.Very safe, quietThis is a great, quiet apartment complex a little further from school (for

It is only a couple blocks from the toll road and takes about 20mins to get to campus. Each apartment has its own connected garage.(current rent 2Br/2Ba is $1225/mo).Don’t live near school, branch out the first two years, live near schoolduring 3rd year when it really mattersI am married and have a daughter. Our small family lives in Centreport(between Euless and Irving) so that my wife can use our only vehicle and Iride the train to campus. The rent is cheaper than Dallas and it's a nice, safe place to live. If you are married, have children, and/or are interestingin learning about taking the train to campusGreat condos to purchase- I know 3 other students and a cardiology fellowwho live in the building. Quiet, but ideally located off McKinney Ave nearIdle Rich, Jake's, & The Gingerman. 1 br from $130k- Very affordable and spacious living option in this area of town; the onlydrawback is that to keep rent prices down, the apartment complex hasdecided to forego modernizing their apartments. Old appliances and just ageneral old feel to the complex. - Nice and quiet; mostly a complex forretirees and young professionals. - Very pet friendly. Large park out infront of complex to walk your dogs. - Pool and jacuzzi. - Need gateremote to enter and leave complex, so very safe. Apartments also havebuilt-in alarm systems.********************************************It's a quiet community with older residents. Not for the party crowd.*******************************************Great location, great price. 2 bed 2 baths. I live with a classmate so allbills included we pay around $550 per month each. The apartment is alittle old, but comfortable and it has a unique loft style. Washer and dryerincluded. No complaints yet.The Village is a fantastic place to live if you want to get away from the medcenter or have a family. You are close to White Rock Lake, greatrestaurants along Greenville, are close to the DART line for a 30 min trainride to school and it is very safe.I live in Frisco due to the convenience for my wife's job. It's a greatcommunity but I wouldn't really think most first years would want to livethis far away from school.

UT Southwestern Medical CenterFrequently Asked Questions:The Computer RequirementandThe Curriculum NetworkFebruary 16, 2013Dear UT Southwestern Student,It is time to start thinking about the options for obtaining the computer youwill be using during school. The biggest decision confronting you now iswhether you wish to purchase a UT Southwestern computer package, purchase a computer elsewhere, or use a computer you already own.Since these are important decisions, we have composed a list of answers to"Frequently Asked Questions" to help. These answers are directed atstudents opting to purchase a new computer; the questions are divided intothree sections: 1) What should I buy? 2) How should I buy it? 3) What can Iexpect?Sincerely,David PriceStudent Computer SupportThe Student Computer Curriculum Steering CommitteeJim Wagner, MD, Associate Dean for Student Affairs

Part 1: What should I buy?Should I take advantage of the UT Southwestern computer package or buy a computeron my own?We recommend that you compare the prices offered with the UT Southwesterndiscount to prices on the manufacturers’ web sites. The manufacturers often offerbetter pricing to the general public. We have Dell, Apple, and Lenovo certifiedtechnicians on campus who can assist you with hardware problems and can orderDell and Lenovo parts for you if your system is under warranty. Two exceptions tothis are Lenovo personal class computers, such as Ideapads, and Mac laptops. Ourtechnicians can do some hardware replacements on other models, but we may referyou to a business that works on your particular hardware. If your computer is notunder warranty or not a Dell or Lenovo, you are responsible for bringing the parts. We recommend that you get a warranty for as long as you plan to keep thecomputer. UT Southwestern makes no money from students purchasing from anymanufacturer.Students who will be using financial aid to purchase their computers will find twoadditional benefits: First, students will be able to order their computer before theyactually receive the loan on the first day of school. Secondly, the University Storewill allow the purchasing plan to match the disbursement of financial aid (see “TheUniversity Store Computer Purchase Form” link below). That is, since financial aidis disbursed semi-annually, students will be allowed to pay for their computers withmoney they will not receive until the middle of the academic year without financialpenalty. What choices will I have if I purchase the UT Southwestern computer package?Students will be able to configure the machine that best meets their needs directlywith these vendors.• Lenovo ComputersLenovo offers discounts on its entire product line to UT SouthwesternStudents, Faculty, and Staff. Click on this link for more information.• Dell Computers• The Dell Employee Purchase Program (EPP) guarantees its prices to be atleast 2% (and up to 12%) below Dell.com on all configurations. The tollfreenumber to place Dell EPP orders is 1-866-467-3355. Below are the

steps to complete a private purchase.Log directly into the UT Southwestern promotional siteor visit Dell's generic Employee Purchase Program (EPP) siteand use member ID hs18179928When you are ready to place an order, call the UTSW Dell EPPrepresentative at the toll-free number, or continue online to placeyour order directly. Either way, be sure to use your home addressas a "Ship to" address. If you have any questions about your particular Dell EPP order, call the Dell phone number above.• Apple ComputersApple offers discounts to UT Southwestern employees and studentsbelow the pricing at the Apple Computer Store web site. Below are thesteps to complete a private purchase.1. From any web browser, navigate to http://store.apple.com.2. Click Education on the menu bar across the top of the page.3. Under Shop for Yourself, click Higher Education Faculty, Staffand Students.4. Using the School Locator, choose Texas for the school's state, type in Dallas for the school's city, and click on the Find button.5. Scroll down, highlight Univ of Tx SW Medical Center A, andclick Continue.6. Click I Accept to accept the terms of the Shopping Agreement. You will be taken directly to the Apple promotional UTSouthwestern website.7. Configure your system and proceed to the Review your orderpage.8. The Review your order page contains a summary of yourorder. If you are a repeat customer, enter your Apple ID andpassword, and press the Checkout button. Otherwise click theNew Account button. Enter your home shipping address and

personal credit card number. If you have questions about your order, call 1-800-MY-APPLE.Should I buy a Mac or PC?UT Southwestern supports both. For medical school purposes you will be fineeither way.Currently the first and second year medical school classes organize video streamingof their lectures. The software that is used is Microsoft Producer 2007. Mac usershave experienced difficulty accessing this in the past, but the Web CurriculumGroup has implemented a system that should make access via PC or Mac verysimilar.Should I buy a laptop, desktop or tablet? Most students purchase laptops. You will have wireless access in most places oncampus as well as Ethernet options in the library and in your carrels. There arestudent workstations available in the library and your carrels, so you do not have tohave a laptop, but most students like the convenience. We strongly recommendthat you never leave your laptop unattended (even in your car) on campus.Tablets are okay if they have a full Windows 7or OSX operating system. Androidand iOS operating systems will not give you full functionality. How much can I expect to spend on my computer? There is a wide price range for both laptops and desktops. The best thing to do iscompare the prices offered by different manufactures. What are the minimum requirements of the computer hardware?Any computer on the market today will meet the minimum requirements. What software should I buy?If you are purchasing a PC, we support XP, Vista and Windows 7 for students. Wedo not support Linux. We support Mac OS 10.5 and higher. We offer Sophos antivirus software once you become a student. Don’t spendmoney on an antivirus application. There are also some very good free options suchas Microsoft Security Essentials. You might want to wait on your purchase of software until you are able to learn ofthe special software packages negotiated by the U.T. System. For example,

Microsoft Windows and Office are available through the University Store for avery reasonable price to UT students. Their phone number is 214/648-9024.Part 2: How should I buy it?UT Southwestern computer "packages" will be available through three vendors.Dell and Apple have a long history with UT Southwestern and workingrelationships with our University Store. We now also have a relationship withLenovo. Students are welcome to purchase computers from other vendors;however, the campus is most able to provide support for these "packages", themachines with which we are most familiar. Will I be able to order a customized computer if I use the "packages"?Yes. The above vendors provide sites at which students may configure computersand check pricing and availability of components. Will I be able to use financial aid to purchase my computer?Yes. As a matter of fact, an amount of $3,200 is automatically included in yourfinancial aid allocation. If I decide not to buy a computer this year, is there anything I need to doregarding financial aid?Yes. You should decline $3,200 of your financial aid award.Do I have to purchase my computer from the above vendors if I am gettingfinancial aid?No. You will be eligible for the money regardless of where you purchase yourcomputer. HOWEVER, there are two advantages to purchasing your computerfrom the web sites below. First, federal regulations mandate that financial aid beawarded in two equal portions: at the beginning and in the middle of the academicyear. The University Store has agreed to accept payment for your computer directlyfrom the student financial office with one half of the payment extracted from theinitial disbursement and the remaining half from the mid-year disbursement. Thereis a modest handling fee for this service. Of course, purchasing a computerelsewhere will likely require payment in full at the time of delivery.Second, financial aid money does not become available to the student until schoolstarts. The University Store has agreed to facilitate the ordering of computers fromthese starts with promised financial aid money starting June 1. To purchasethrough the University Store, one will need to complete the form, linked below.

Do I have to take the full $3,200 even if my computer costs less?Absolutely not. You can decline any amount of financial aid and you are stronglyencouraged to borrow only what you need.Is there anything else I need to know about financial aid and the purchase of acomputer?Yes. You can only get financial aid to buy a computer once. If you get the loan, buythe computer because subsequent loans will not be possible. If you don't plan tobuy a computer, don't take the loan. Also, be aware the aid will come in the form ofloans. The implication is that you will want to borrow no more than the amountneeded to cover whichever computer purchase option you choose (buy UTSouthwestern package, buy elsewhere, no purchase). This money will be availableto you once, either in your first or second year. That is, don't borrow the money thefirst year and spend it on a trip to Hawaii instead of a computer. When you realizelater that you really DO need the computer, the money is already spent. Will I be able to lease a computer? We have explored the lease option in the case of financial aid and have not beenable to find an option that offers any benefit over outright purchase. Since thefinancial aid is limited to the duration of the time the computer is required (e.g. thefirst two years of medical school), the final lease price is almost identical to thepurchase price.Once a student is ready to purchase, he or she should begin by reading specificinstructions outlined on the web at this address:Computer PurchasesTo take advantage of the University Store’s payment plan to match financial aiddisbursement, completeClick here for The University Store Computer Purchase Agreement FormPart 3: What can I expect? What will be available and what software will I need?Material from most courses is available and will be accessible using an internetbrowser. As with all internet connections, the speed of access to the network willinfluence the feasibility of access. For example, on-campus ethernet connectionwill be quicker than wireless. Some class material will also be available on CDs.

The same material is accessible using Mozilla Firefox, Internet Explorer or AppleSafari, but there may be slight differences in appearance. Other software used at theUniversity will be Microsoft Office, Outlook/Exchange E-mail, and Shared Folders(common areas of data storage that allow students to share data). Some proprietarysoftware will be available on campus only. By using Virtual Private Networks(VPN), students may configure their computers while off campus to be “virtually”on-campus, allowing access to most material restricted to on-campus computers.Remember to wait to see the special deals on software negotiated by the UTSystem. Will the computer be safe and secure?Keep in mind the computer you purchase is your property and is completely underyour control. UT Southwestern has established minimum standards to help youprotect your equipment, but please be very cautious with your computer on campus. Each student is responsible for ensuring that their computer has current anti-virus(Sophos is the recommended anti-virus vendor) and up-to-date operating systempatches (automatic updates recommended).Security also involves the use of computers in the context of the curriculumnetwork. Computing and networking resources at UT Southwestern are protectedby information security legislation. These resources must be used for Universitybusiness. Education is considered the business of students, so e-mail fraud andbrowsing inappropriate web sites are among the activities listed in the "no-no"category.You will be asked to sign a computer use policy and an information securityagreement (ISA) when you register for class and each year you are enrolledthereafter. When will I learn my login ID and password? You will be sent your UT Southwestern ID and password in the Spring. With thisinformation, you will have access to the Outlook email system as well as the fullcomplement of resources available to UT Southwestern medical students, includingthe Web Curriculum (curriculum.swmed.edu) and proprietary programs. How do I get help when I need support? The University staff will be easily accessible for problems. You will be responsiblefor obtaining hardware warranty services from the manufacturer.UT Southwestern strongly recommends a warranty for as long as you plan tokeep the computer.. UT Southwestern has a staff member hired specifically to bethe computer help contact for students. Computer support will be free-of-charge for

students. UT Southwestern is an official Apple, Lenovo and Dell Service Center, however we cannot perform some warranty hardware repairs on Apple laptops andLenovo personal class computers. What happens if my computer breaks when I am studying for an exam? There will be computers available on campus at the Main Campus Library, theNorth Campus Library, and L2/L3 lab areas. What about other devices?UT Southwestern does not support smartphones, but devices that support “wpa2enterprise” should work on our campus wireless network.Where can I get more information? Please visit the Student and Postdoc web site for more information on thecomputing environment at UT Southwestern. For security reasons, you will not beable to access some pages such as software downloads until you have startedclasses. This page is only accessible if you are on our network or logged in withVPN.For questions regarding computer support, please contact the IR Call Center at 214/648-7600or ircallcenter@utsouthwestern.edu.
