BRITISH OPEN CHAMPIONSHIPNOTESFrom the unusual injury department, ColinMontgomerie tripped at his hotel on Thursdaymorning and injured his wrist. Due to the extent ofhis injury, he was not able to warm up and withdrewwhile playing his sixth hole during the first round.The first-round scoring average of 76.455 was thehighest single-round of 2003 on the <strong>PGA</strong> <strong>TOUR</strong>,eclipsing the 76.204 in the first round of theMasters Tournament. Only five of the 156 playersthat started the first round broke par, while sevenplayers finished at level par.Playing in the 62nd major championship of hiscareer, 36-hole leader Davis Love III had neverheld the 36-hole lead at a major.Sergio Garcia was the lone player to finish in thetop-10 at all four major championships in 2002. Fiveplayers entered the Open Championship looking toextend major top-10 streaks in 2003 but wereunable to do so. Jim Furyk (3), Scott Verplank(2) and David Toms (2) missed the cut whileMike Weir (2) and Ernie Els (2) both finishedoutside the top-10.Nine of the 14 past Open champions competing atthe 2003 Open Championship made the cut: GregNorman, Tom Watson, Mark O’Meara, TigerWoods, Nick Price, John Daly, Nick Faldo,Tom Lehman, and Ernie Els. Those five notmaking the cut were: Justin Leonard, SandyLyle, David Duval, Mark Calcavecchia andPaul Lawrie.The cut of 75 players at 8-over-par was the highest atthe Open Championship since 1999 when the cutcame at 12-over-par at Carnoustie. The cut is also thehighest on the <strong>PGA</strong> <strong>TOUR</strong> since 10-over-par made thecut at the 2002 U.S. Open. The highest cut on the<strong>PGA</strong> <strong>TOUR</strong> in 2003 before the Open Championshipwas 5-over-par 149 at the Masters Tournament.Tiger Woods recorded two eagles on Saturday, onthe par-5 fourth and the par-5 seventh. Woodsrecorded two eagles in a round three times in 2003:the final round of the PLAYERS Championship andthe second round of the Buick Open.
