U.S. OPEN CHAMPIONSHIPSECTION 3 / SUMMARIESNOTESIn just his second U.S. Open appearance, StephenLeaney posted a runner-up finish. Then again, he isused to overcoming obstacles. Leaney rebuilt hiscareer after a life-threatening medical problem in1993, when he had two ribs removed and didn’tplay golf for seven months. According to his doctor, chances were pretty good that he wasn’t going toplay golf again. With his second-place finish, thefirst of his PGA TOUR career, Leaney earned a spoton the 2004 TOUR.Kenny Perry’s prior best in a U.S. Open was a tiefor 25th in 1993 at Baltusrol when he had aweekend finish of 68-71. In 2003, Perry finishedwith a 3-under 67 and a 1-under total for thechampionship, tied for third. It was his best finishin a major since his solo second at the PGAChampionship in 1996.Trip Kuehne, the older brother of PGA TOURmember Hank Kuehne, became the low amateurin the 2003 U.S. Open by one stroke over 2002 U.S.Amateur champion Ricky Barnes. Kuehne led theOpen in driving with a 325.6-yard average, almost10 yards ahead of Darren Clarke, who wassecond with a driving average of 315.9. Hank ledthe PGA TOUR in Driving Distance in 2003.In 2002, Tiger Woods became the first personsince Jack Nicklaus to win both the MastersTournament and the U.S. Open in the same season.Three others have accomplished the feat – CraigWood (1941), Ben Hogan (1951, ’53) and ArnoldPalmer (1960). Only Hogan in 1953 went on to winthe British Open.In 2002, Tiger Woods had the sixth wire-to-wirewin in U.S. Open history and his second (2000).Others include: Walter Hagen (1914), JamesBarnes (1921), Ben Hogan (1951, ’53) and TonyJacklin (1970).In 2002, Tiger Woods became the first person inhistory to win multiple U.S Junior (1991-93), U.S.Amateur (1994-96) and US Open (2000, ’02) titles. In the last 50 years, American players have won 44U.S. Opens. The only exceptions were four won bySouth Africans (Gary Player, Ernie Els twice andRetief Goosen), one by an Australian (DavidGraham) and one by an Englishman (Tony Jacklin).TOURNAMENT HISTORYYear Winner Score Runner-up Score Location1978 Andy North 285 Dave Stockton 286 Cherry Hills CC, Englewood, COJ.C.
