Leaney rebuilt hiscareer after a life-threatening medical problem in1993, when he had two ribs removed and didn’tplay golf for seven months. According to his doctor,chances were pretty good that he wasn’t going toplay golf again. With his second-place finish, thefirst of his <strong>PGA</strong> <strong>TOUR</strong> career, Leaney earned a spoton the <strong>2004</strong> <strong>TOUR</strong>.Kenny Perry’s prior best in a U.S. Open was a tiefor 25th in 1993 at Baltusrol when he had aweekend finish of 68-71. In 2003, Perry finishedwith a 3-under 67 and a 1-under total for thechampionship, tied for third. It was his best finishin a major since his solo second at the <strong>PGA</strong>Championship in 1996.Trip Kuehne, the older brother of <strong>PGA</strong> <strong>TOUR</strong>member Hank Kuehne, became the low amateurin the 2003 U.S. Open by one stroke over 2002 U.S.Amateur champion Ricky Barnes. Kuehne led theOpen in driving with a 325.6-yard average, almost10 yards ahead of Darren Clarke, who wassecond with a driving average of 315.9. Hank ledthe <strong>PGA</strong> <strong>TOUR</strong> in Driving Distance in 2003.In 2002, Tiger Woods became the first personsince Jack Nicklaus to win both the MastersTournament and the U.S. Open in the same season.Three others have accomplished the feat – CraigWood (1941), Ben Hogan (1951, ’53) and ArnoldPalmer (1960).
