SHELL HOUSTON OPENNOTESThe Shell Houston Open was played at RedstoneGolf Club in 2003, ending a 27-year associationwith The Woodlands.Fred Couples became the sixth player over theage of forty to win the Shell Houston Open, joiningEd Oliver (1958), Roberto de Vicenzo (1968),Lee Elder (1976), Gene Littler (1977) and HalSutton (2001).During the 2003 Shell Houston Open, FredCouples was the only player to record four roundsin the 60s.Playing the fourth longest course on TOUR in 2003season, Redstone Golf Club, 35 players finished thetournament in 2003 above 300 yards in driving distance, led by John Daly with an average of 322.8 yards.Fred Couples defeated runners-up MarkCalcavecchia, Stuart Appleby and HankKuehne to win the 2003 Shell Houston Open. Itwasn’t the first time Couples and Calcavecchiahave finished one-two in a tournament. At the1987 Byron Nelson Classic, Couples defeatedCalcavecchia in a three-hole playoff after the twowere tied through regulation at 14-under.In 2003 in Houston, lack of accuracy off the teedidn’t seem to bother the leaders. Both Couplesand Calcavecchia managed to hit only 29 of 56fairways (51.8 percent). Kuehne struggled evenmore (42.9, 24 of 56).With his victory at the 2002 Shell Houston Open,Vijay Singh ended his longest winless stretch onthe PGA TOUR since he first played in 1992. Singhhad not won since the 2000 Masters, a string of 50official PGA TOUR starts. His previous longest dryspell lasted 43 tournaments, from the 1995 BuickClassic to the 1997 Memorial Tournament.Tournament Record:266, Curtis Strange, 1980 (Woodlands CC); Lee Trevino, 1980(Woodlands CC); Vijay Singh, 2002 (TPC at The Woodlands)Current Course Record:64, Hank Kuehne, Greg Chalmers, Jeff Maggert, 2003Tournament Course Record:62, Ron Streck, 1981 (Woodlands CC); Fred Funk, 1992 (TPCat The Woodlands)TOURNAMENT HISTORYYear Winner Score Runner-up Score Location Par/Yards1970 Gibby Gilbert* 282 Bruce Crampton 282 Champions GC, Houston, TX 70/7,1661971 Hubert Green* 280 Don January 280 Champions GC, Houston, TX 70/7,166HOUSTON OPEN1972 Bruce Devlin 278 Tommy Aaron 280 Westwood CC, Houston, TX 72/6,998Lou GrahamDoug Sanders1973 Bruce Crampton 277 Dave Stockton 278 Quail Valley GC, Missouri City, TX 72/6,9051974 Dave Hill 276 Rod Curl 277 Quail Valley GC, Missouri City, TX 72/6,905Steve MelnykAndy North1975 Bruce Crampton 273 Gil Morgan 275 Woodlands CC, The Woodlands, TX 72/6,9291976 Lee Elder 278 Forrest Fezler 279 Woodlands CC, The Woodlands, TX 72/6,9971977 Gene Littler 276 Lanny Wadkins 279 Woodlands CC, The Woodlands, TX 72/6,9971978 Gary Player 270 Andy Bean 271 Woodlands CC, The Woodlands, TX 72/6,9971979 Wayne Levi 268 Michael Brannan 270 Woodlands CC, The Woodlands, TX 71/6,918MICHELOB HOUSTON OPEN1980 Curtis Strange* 266 Lee Trevino 266 Woodlands CC, The Woodlands, TX 71/6,9181981 Ron Streck~ 198 Hale Irwin 201 Woodlands CC, The Woodlands, TX 71/7,071Jerry Pate1982 Ed Sneed* 275 Bob Shearer 275 Woodlands CC, The Woodlands, TX 71/7,031HOUSTON COCA-COLA OPEN1983 David Graham 275 Lee Elder 280 Woodlands CC, The Woodlands, TX 71/7,031Jim ThorpeLee Trevino1984 Corey Pavin 274 Buddy Gardner 275 Woodlands CC, The Woodlands, TX 71/7,031HOUSTON OPEN1985 Raymond Floyd 277 David Frost 278 TPC at The Woodlands, The Woodlands, TX 72/7,042Bob Lohr1986 Curtis Strange* 274 Calvin Peete 274 TPC at The Woodlands, The Woodlands, TX 72/7,045BIG I HOUSTON OPEN1987 Jay Haas* 276 Buddy Gardner 276 TPC at The Woodlands, The Woodlands, TX 72/7,042INDEPENDENT INSURANCE AGENT OPEN1988 Curtis Strange* 270 Greg Norman 270 TPC at The Woodlands, The Woodlands, TX 72/7,0451989 Mike Sullivan 280 Craig Stadler 281 TPC at The Woodlands, The Woodlands, TX 72/7,0421990 Tony Sills~* 204 Gil Morgan 204 TPC at The Woodlands, The Woodlands, TX 72/7,0421991 Fulton Allem+++ 273 Billy Ray Brown 274 TPC at The Woodlands, The Woodlands, TX 72/7,042Mike HulbertTom KiteSHELL HOUSTON OPEN1992 Fred Funk 272 Kirk Triplett 274 TPC at The Woodlands, The Woodlands, TX 72/7,0421993 Jim McGovern~* 199 John Huston 199 TPC at The Woodlands, The Woodlands, TX 72/7,0421994 Mike Heinen 272 Tom Kite 275 TPC at The Woodlands, The Woodlands, TX 72/7,042Jeff MaggertHal Sutton1995 Payne Stewart* 276 Scott Hoch 276 TPC at The Woodlands, The Woodlands, TX 72/7,0421996 Mark Brooks* 274 Jeff Maggert 274 TPC at The Woodlands, The Woodlands, TX 72/7,0421997 Phil Blackmar* 276 Kevin Sutherland 276 TPC at The Woodlands, The Woodlands, TX 72/7,0421998 David Duval 276 Jeff Maggert 277 TPC at The Woodlands, The Woodlands, TX 72/7,0181999 Stuart Appleby 279 John Cook 280 TPC at The Woodlands, The Woodlands, TX 72/7,018Hal Sutton2000 Robert Allenby* 275 Craig Stadler 275 TPC at The Woodlands, The Woodlands, TX 72/7,0182001 Hal Sutton 278 Joe Durant 281 TPC at The Woodlands, The Woodlands, TX 72/7,018Lee Janzen2002 Vijay Singh 266 Darren Clarke 272 TPC at The Woodlands, The Woodlands, TX 72/7,0182003 Fred Couples 267 Stuart Appleby 271 Redstone GC, Humble, TX 72/7,508Mark Calcavecchia 271Hank Kuehne 271KEY: * = Playoff ~ = Weather-shortened + = Tournament postponed in April 1966; rescheduled to November ++ = Champions served as site forU.S. Open +++ = Tournament postponed in April 1991; rescheduled to OctoberSECTION 3 / SUMMARIESWWW.PGATOUR.COM 2004 PGA TOUR Media Guide / 3-39
