PGA TOUR West Coast Swing Presented by The St. PaulAT&T PEBBLE BEACH NATIONAL PRO-AMNOTESSpyglass Hill Golf Course, one of the coursesutilized for the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am, opened in 1966. The names given to each ofthe holes are derived from Robert Louis Stevenson’sclassic, “Treasure Island.”The par-3 17th hole has played quite a role in twoof the four U.S. Opens played at Pebble Beach. In1972, Jack Nicklaus hit 1-iron close and madebirdie to sew up the tournament. In the 1982 battlebetween Nicklaus and Tom Watson, Watsonneeded birdie to win but missed the 17th green. Hesank his chip shot to take a one-stroke lead andthen birdied the 18th hole to win by two. Tom Kitewon the 1992 U.S. Open at Pebble and Tiger Woodswon in 2000.The par-3 fifth hole at Pebble Beach was rebuiltand reopened in 1998. The redesign was performedby Jack Nicklaus, and is located along the Pacificcoastline on a 50-foot cliff. At a cost of $3 million,No. 5 is possibly the most expensive new hole inchampionship golf.In May 2002, a 67-foot cypress tree was uprootedfrom the first hole, hauled across the famous golflayout at Pebble Beach and finally transplantednear the 18th green. The original tree near the 18thgreen was taken down in August 2001 after beingstruck by lightning and because of disease. Theentire process of moving a tree from No. 1 to No.18 was completed in three days and neverdisrupted play at the course.TOURNAMENT HISTORYYear Winner Score Runner-up Score Location Par/Yards2000 Tiger Woods 273 Matt Gogel 275 Pebble Beach GL, Pebble Beach, CA 72/6,816Vijay Singh Spyglass Hill GC, Pebble Beach, CA 72/6,817Poppy Hills GC, Pebble Beach, CA 72/6,8332001 Davis Love III 272 Vijay Singh 273 Pebble Beach GL, Pebble Beach, CA 72/6,816Spyglass Hill GC, Pebble Beach, CA 72/6,817Poppy Hills GC, Pebble Beach, CA 72/6,8332002 Matt Gogel 274 Pat Perez 277 Pebble Beach GL, Pebble Beach, CA 72/6,816Spyglass Hill GC, Pebble Beach, CA 72/6,862Poppy Hills GC, Pebble Beach, CA 72/6,8332003 Davis Love III 274 Tom Lehman 275 Pebble Beach GL, Pebble Beach, CA 72/6,816Spyglass Hill GC, Pebble Beach, CA 72/6,862Poppy Hills GC, Pebble Beach, CA 72/6,833KEY: * = Playoff ~ = Weather-shortened # = Amateur + = Canceled after two rounds due to unplayable course conditionsEligibility Requirements for 2004 AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-AmEligible players in the 180-professional field are those players listed in order of priority under Section III-A ofthe Tournament Regulations, except that prior to such players, the following shall first be eligible:• Winners of the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am prior to 2000, and winners of the AT&T Pebble BeachNational Pro-Am in 2000 and beyond for a period of five years following their win.• Winners of THE PLAYERS Championship, Masters Tournament, U.S. Open, British Open and PGAChampionship prior to 2000, and winners of these events in 2000 and beyond for a period of five yearsfollowing their win.• 16 sponsor exemptions, restricted as follows:• Four from the current year’s PGA TOUR membership.• Eight from among the 2003 PGA TOUR Qualifying Tournament’s top 30 finishers and ties and the firstthrough 20th finishers on the 2003 Official Nationwide Tour Money List.• Four “unrestricted” that must be awarded to professionals.NOTE: The sponsor will team each professional player with an amateur player.
