That year, Calcavecchia tied theprevious mark for the best score in relation to par ina 72-hole tournament (28-under par, John Huston,1998 United Airlines Hawaiian Open). Rocco<strong>Media</strong>te finished second behind both Els andCalcavecchia during the record-setting tournaments.The tournament record for largest margin of victoryis 13 strokes by Gene Littler in 1955.With his 31-under par, Ernie Els not only broke the72-hole tournament record but the best first 72holes mark as well. Joe Durant set that recordwith a score of 29-under par through the first fourrounds of the 2001 Bob Hope Chrysler Classic.Over the last six seasons on the <strong>PGA</strong> <strong>TOUR</strong>, ErnieEls has begun his year with a top-five finish in five ofthose six seasons. He also picked up a victory in hisfirst <strong>TOUR</strong> event of the season for the second time inhis career. The first came at the 1999 Nissan Open.The best finish by the 18 first-timers in attendancecame from K.J. Choi who tied for second. Four ofthe first-timers finished in the top 10 – JonathanByrd (T6), Chris Riley (T6) and Jerry Kelly (T10).The T6 finish by Jim Furyk was his fifthconsecutive top-10 finish at the MercedesChampionships in Kapalua. In 2003,11 players accomplished the feat, and the winner,Ernie Els, broke the 30-under plateau.Out of the 144 rounds that were played in 2003 onThe Plantation Course, just nine rounds came inover par. Despite all the sub-par rounds, only ErnieEls was able to record four rounds in the 60s. Elsbecame the third player to record four rounds in the60s at Kapalua. David Duval was the first to do soin 1999 and Jim Furyk followed suit during his2001 victory.The course scoring average finished in the 60s forall four rounds of the 2003 tournament. That’s afirst for The Plantation Course. In fact, each round’sscoring average was a tournament low. The finalround finished with an average of 68.333. Theprevious final-round low (70.031) came during the2002 event.The 63s by Jonathan Byrd and Rocco <strong>Media</strong>teset a new final-round low for the tournament. Theprevious mark of 64 was held by six players,including last year’s champion Sergio Garcia.Ernie Els collected seven victories in the lastcalendar year, including the 2002 Heineken Classic,Dubai Desert Classic and Cisco World Match Playon the European <strong>PGA</strong> Tour, the Nedbank GolfChallenge in South Africa and his three <strong>PGA</strong> <strong>TOUR</strong>victories.With his win, Ernie Els moved into the No. 1 spoton the 2003 money list, the highest ranking of hiscareer on the <strong>PGA</strong> <strong>TOUR</strong> season money list.Ernie Els has recorded a first, second (2000) and athird (2001) at the Mercedes Championships.
