That year, Calcavecchia tied theprevious mark for the best score in relation to par ina 72-hole tournament (28-under par, John Huston,1998 United Airlines Hawaiian Open). Rocco<strong>Media</strong>te finished second behind both Els andCalcavecchia during the record-setting tournaments.The tournament record for largest margin of victoryis 13 strokes by Gene Littler in 1955.With his 31-under par, Ernie Els not only broke the72-hole tournament record but the best first 72holes mark as well. Joe Durant set that recordwith a score of 29-under par through the first fourrounds of the 2001 Bob Hope Chrysler Classic.Over the last six seasons on the <strong>PGA</strong> <strong>TOUR</strong>, ErnieEls has begun his year with a top-five finish in five ofthose six seasons. He also picked up a victory in hisfirst <strong>TOUR</strong> event of the season for the second time inhis career. The first came at the 1999 Nissan Open.The best finish by the 18 first-timers in attendancecame from K.J. Choi who tied for second. Four ofthe first-timers finished in the top 10 – JonathanByrd (T6), Chris Riley (T6) and Jerry Kelly (T10).The T6 finish by Jim Furyk was his fifthconsecutive top-10 finish at the MercedesChampionships in Kapalua. He finished 9th, T4, 1stand 4th over the first four years.
