Approximately 9 percent <strong>of</strong> children from Roma settlementsaged less than six months are exclusively breastfed, a lowlevel compared to WHO/UNICEF recommendations.By age 12–15 months, 54 percent <strong>of</strong> children are stillbeing breastfed and by age 20–23 months, 37 percentare still breastfed. Half <strong>of</strong> children aged 0–5 monthsare predominantly breastfed (52 percent).Figure NU.3R shows the detailed pattern <strong>of</strong> breastfeedingby the child’s age in months. Even at the earliest ages, themajority <strong>of</strong> children are receiving liquids or foods other thanbreast milk. By the end <strong>of</strong> the fifth month, the percentage <strong>of</strong>children exclusively breastfed is around 3 percent. However,one third <strong>of</strong> children from Roma settlements are stillreceiving breast milk at the end <strong>of</strong> the second year.Table NU.4R shows the median duration <strong>of</strong> breastfeedingby selected background characteristics. Among childrenunder 3, the median duration for any breastfeeding is 15months, half a month for exclusive breastfeeding, and4 months for predominant breastfeeding.
