In Table NU.3, breastfeeding status is based on thereports of mothers/caretakers of children’s consumptionof food and fluids in the 24 hours prior to the interview.Exclusively breastfed refers to infants who received onlybreast milk (and vitamins, mineral supplements, ormedicine). Predominantly breastfed refers to infants whoreceive breast milk and certain fluids (water and water-based drinks, fruit juice, ritual fluids, oral rehydrationsolutions, drops, vitamins, minerals and medicines), butdo not receive anything else (in particular, non-humanmilk and food-based fluids). The table shows exclusivebreastfeeding of infants during the first six months oflife, as well as continued breastfeeding of children at12–15 and 20–23 months of age.Approximately 14 percent of children aged less than sixmonths are exclusively breastfed. This is a low level ofexclusive breastfeeding compared to WHO/UNICEFrecommendations. By age 12–15 months, 18 percentof children are still being breastfed; and by age 20–23months, 15 percent are still breastfed. Boys are more likelyto be breastfed for longer than girls; the rate of exclusivebreastfeeding of boys and girls 0–5 months old is almostthe same, but at the age of two, 21 percent of boys and 9percent of girls are still breastfed. Four out of ten childrenin Serbia are predominantly breastfed (39 percent) withinthe first 5 months, with high regional differences.the percentage of children exclusively breastfed isbelow 4 percent. Only about 6 percent of children arereceiving breast milk at the end of the second year.Table NU.4 shows the median duration of breastfeedingby selected background characteristics. Among childrenunder the age of 3, the median duration is 9 months forany breastfeeding, 1 month for exclusive breastfeeding,and 2 months for predominant breastfeeding. The medianduration of any breastfeeding is the longest in Belgrade (10months) while Vojvodina has the longest median durationof predominant breastfeeding (3 months).Figure NU.3: Percent distribution of children under age 2by feeding pattern by age group, Serbia, 2010Figure NU.3 shows the detailed pattern of breastfeedingby the child’s age in months. Different criteriaof adequate feeding are used depending on the ageof the child. For infants aged 0–5 months, exclusivebreastfeeding is considered as adequate feeding,while infants aged 6–23 months are considered to beadequately fed if they are receiving breast-milk andsolid, semi-solid or soft food. Based on these feedingpatterns, only 19 percent of children in Serbia aged0–23 months are being adequately fed. The prevalenceof adequate feeding is higher among boys (22 percent)than among girls (16 percent).
