XI CHILD PROTECTIONBirth RegistrationThe Convention on the Rights of the Child states that everychild has the right to a name and a nationality and the rightto protection from being deprived of his or her identity. Birthregistration is a fundamental means of securing these rightsfor children. A World Fit for Children goal is to developsystems to ensure the registration of every child at, or shortlyafter, birth, and fulfil his or her right to acquire a name anda nationality, in accordance with national laws and relevantinternational instruments. The indicator is the percentageof children under 5 years of age whose birth is registered.The births of 99 percent of children under five years of agein Serbia have been registered (Table CP.1). There are nosignificant variations in birth registration across sex, age,region or education categories.
