Literacy among Young Women and Menin Roma SettlementsThese literacy rates are presented in Tables ED.1R andED.1R.M. Findings indicate that the literacy level ofthe population in Roma settlements is generally lowerthan for the national sample, as only slightly over threequarters of Roma aged 15–24 years in Roma settlementsare literate (77 percent of women and 78 percent of men).Literacy status varies by all observed categories. The worstsituation is among the poorest quintile where only abouthalf are literate (49 percent of women and 46 percent ofmen), compared to both 89 percent respectively in therichest quintile. Of those who stated that primary schoolwas their highest level of education, 83 percent of womenand 76 percent of men were actually able to read thestatement shown to them. Comparing the 15–19 age groupwith the 20–24 age group, younger women seem to have ahigher literacy rate, (by approximately eight percent) butunfortunately not younger men (who have a four percentlower rate than the 20–24 age group).Table ED.1R: Literacy among young women,Roma Settlements, 2010Percentage of women age 15–24 years who are literatePercentageliterate 1Percentagenot knownNumberof women age15–24 yearsAreaUrban 77.9 .0 526Rural 73.6 .2 256EducationNone 19.9 .4 115Primary 83.2 .0 550Secondary 100.0 .0 110Age15–19 80.0 .0 42920–24 72.2 .2 354Wealth index quintilePoorest 49.2 .0 157Second 75.8 .4 162Middle 76.1 .0 158Fourth 92.9 .0 165Richest 88.8 .0 142Total 76.5 .1 7831MICS indicator 7.1; MDG indicator 2.3Table ED.1R.M: Literacy among young men,Roma Settlements, 2010Percentage of men age 15–24 years who are literatePercentageliterate 1Percentagenot knownNumberof men age15–24 yearsAreaUrban 80.7 .3 399Rural 71.8 .2 189EducationNone (10.3) (0.0) 38Primary 75.9 .4 400Secondary 100.0 .0 146Age15–19 75.7 .5 29520–24 80.0 .1 293Wealth index quintilePoorest 46.4 .0 130Second 80.8 .0 126Middle 90.3 .0 121Fourth 88.0 .3 113Richest 88.7 1.4 98Total 77.8 .3 5881MICS indicator 7.1; MDG indicator 2.3( ) Figures that are based on 25–49 unweighted cases154MULTIPLE INDICATOR CLUSTER SURVEY 2010
