The playthings in MICS includedhomemade toys (such as dolls and cars, or other toys madeat home), toys that came from a store, and householdobjects (such as pots and bowls) or objects and materialsfound outside the home (such as sticks, rocks, animal shells,or leaves). It is interesting to note that 78 percent <strong>of</strong> childrenplay with toys that come from a store. The proportion <strong>of</strong>children who have 2 or more playthings is 53 percent amongboys and 56 percent among girls. There are some urban-rural differentials, namely, that 58 percent <strong>of</strong> children havetwo or more playthings in urban areas, and 47 percent inrural areas. There are also remarkable differentials in terms<strong>of</strong> mothers’ education and socioeconomic status, and toysfrom stores are present more <strong>of</strong>ten among children whosehousehold has higher socioeconomic status or whosemother has higher education.MONITORING THE SITUATION OF CHILDREN AND WOMEN 147
