Place of DeliveryIncreasing the proportion of deliveries in health facilitiesis an important factor in reducing the health risks to boththe mother and the baby. Proper medical attention andhygienic conditions during delivery can reduce the risks ofcomplications and infection that can cause morbidity andmortality to either the mother or the baby. Table RH.10presents the percentage distribution of women aged 15–49who had a live birth in the two years preceding the surveyby place of delivery and the percentage of births delivered in ahealth facility, according to background characteristics.Almost all (99.8 percent) births in Serbia are delivered in ahealth facility; 98 percent of deliveries occur in public sectorfacilities and only 1 percent occurs in private sector facilities.Utilization of private sector health facilities for deliveries ismore frequent only in Belgrade (7 percent) and among womenwith higher levels of educational attainment (3 percent).Table RH.10: Place of delivery, Serbia, 2010Percent distribution of women age 15–49 who had a live birth in two years preceding the survey by place of deliveryPublic sectorhealth facilityPrivate sectorhealth facilityPlace of deliveryHomeTotalDelivered inhealth facility 1Number of womenwho had a live birth inpreceding two yearsRegionBelgrade 92.4 7.2 .4 .0 100.0 99.6 91Vojvodina 100.0 .0 .0 .0 100.0 100.0 163Sumadija and Western Serbia 99.3 .7 .0 .0 100.0 100.0 144Southern and Eastern Serbia 99.4 .0 .3 .3 100.0 99.4 146AreaUrban 98.5 1.3 .1 .1 100.0 99.8 281Rural 98.2 1.5 .1 .1 100.0 99.8 262Mother’s age at birthLess than 20 97.5 1.1 1.3 .0 100.0 98.7 2820–34 98.3 1.5 .1 .1 100.0 99.8 45635–49 99.7 .3 .0 .0 100.0 100.0 59Number of antenatal care visitsNone (*) (*) (*) (*) 100.0 (*) 51–3 visits (100.0) (0.0) (0.0) (0.0) 100.0 (100.0) 154+ visits 98.4 1.5 .1 .0 100.0 99.9 511Missing/DK (100.0) (0.0) (0.0) (0.0) 100.0 (100.0) 12EducationPrimary 99.1 .4 .5 .0 100.0 99.5 79Secondary 98.7 1.1 .0 .2 100.0 99.8 307Higher 97.5 2.5 .0 .0 100.0 100.0 148Wealth index quintilesPoorest 99.0 .3 .7 .0 100.0 99.3 112Second 100.0 .0 .0 .0 100.0 100.0 97Middle 95.6 4.4 .0 .0 100.0 100.0 87Fourth 100.0 .0 .0 .0 100.0 100.0 106Richest 97.3 2.4 .0 .3 100.0 99.7 141Total 98.4 1.4 .1 .1 100.0 99.8 5431MICS indicator 5.8( ) Figures that are based on 25–49 unweighted cases(*) Figures that are based on less than 25 unweighted casesOtherMONITORING THE SITUATION OF CHILDREN AND WOMEN 135
