Antenatal CareThe antenatal period presents important opportunitiesfor reaching pregnant women with a number ofinterventions that may be vital to their health and well-being, and that of their infants. Better understanding offoetal growth and development and its relationship to themother’s health has resulted in increased attention to thepotential of antenatal care as an intervention to improveboth maternal and newborn health. For example, if theantenatal period is used to inform women and familiesabout the danger signs and symptoms, and about therisks of labour and delivery, it may provide a route forensuring that pregnant women do, in practice, deliverwith the assistance of a skilled health care provider. Theantenatal period also provides an opportunity to supplyinformation on birth spacing, which is recognized as animportant factor in improving infant survival. Adverseoutcomes such as low birth weight can be reducedthrough a combination of interventions to improvewomen’s nutritional status and prevent infections duringpregnancy. More recently, the potential of the antenatalperiod as an entry point for HIV prevention and care, inparticular for the prevention of HIV transmission frommother to child, has led to renewed interest in access to,and use of, antenatal services.Table RH.6: Antenatal care coverage, Serbia, 2010Percent distribution of women age 15–49 who gave birth in the two yearspreceding the survey by type of personnel providing antenatal carePerson providing antenatal careMedical doctorNurse/ MidwifeNo antenatalcare receivedTotalAny skilledpersonnel 1Number of womenwho gave birth in thepreceding two yearsRegionBelgrade 99.2 .4 .4 100.0 99.6 91Vojvodina 99.8 .0 .2 100.0 99.8 163Sumadija and Western Serbia 97.1 .0 2.9 100.0 97.1 144Southern and Eastern Serbia 99.6 .0 .4 100.0 99.6 146AreaUrban 99.6 .1 .3 100.0 99.7 281Rural 98.2 .0 1.8 100.0 98.2 262Mother’s age at birthLess than 20 90.7 .0 9.3 100.0 90.7 2820–34 99.3 .1 .6 100.0 99.4 44235–49 100.0 .0 .0 100.0 100.0 59EducationPrimary 97.8 .0 2.2 100.0 97.8 79Secondary 99.0 .1 .8 100.0 99.2 307Higher 100.0 .0 .0 100.0 100.0 148Wealth index quintilesPoorest 95.4 .0 4.6 100.0 95.4 112Second 100.0 .0 .0 100.0 100.0 97Middle 99.6 .4 .0 100.0 100.0 87Fourth 100.0 .0 .0 100.0 100.0 106Richest 99.8 .0 .2 100.0 99.8 141Total 98.9 .1 1.0 100.0 99.0 5431MICS indicator 5.5a; MDG indicator 5.5126MULTIPLE INDICATOR CLUSTER SURVEY 2010
