Fertility in Roma SettlementsThe adolescent birth rate of the population from Romasettlements in Serbia is 159 (Table RH.1R). This indicatordisplays great variations per type of settlement. It is 128in urban and 218 in rural areas. It does not show obviousdifferences related to mothers’ education. The totalfertility rate in Roma settlements is 2.7.Sexual activity and childbearing early in life carrysignificant risks for young people all around the world.Table RH.2R presents some early childbearing indicatorsfor women aged between 15–19 and between 20–24 inRoma settlements. As shown in the table, one-third ofwomen aged between 15–19 have already had a birth, 40percent have begun childbearing and 4 percent have had alive birth before the age of 15. Almost one third of womenaged 20–24 have had a live birth before they are 18.
