VIII REPRODUCTIVEHEALTHFertilityIn MICS4, adolescent birth rates and total fertilityrates are calculated by using information on the date ofeach woman’s last birth, and are based on the one-yearperiod (1–12 months) preceding the survey. The rates areunderestimated by a very small margin due to the absenceof information on multiple births (twins, triplets etc) andon women having multiple deliveries during the one-yearperiod preceding the survey.Table RH.1 shows adolescent birth rates and total fertilityrate. The adolescent birth rate (age-specific fertility ratefor women aged 15–19) is defined as the number of birthsto women aged 15–19 years during the one year periodpreceding the survey, divided by the average numberof women aged 15–19 (number of women-years livedbetween ages 15 through 19, inclusive) during the sameperiod expressed per 1000 women. The total fertility rate(TFR) is calculated by summing the age-specific fertilityrates calculated for each of the 5-year age groups ofwomen, from age 15 through to age 49. The TFR denotesthe average number of children to which a woman willhave given birth by the end of her reproductive years ifcurrent fertility rates prevailed. The adolescent birth ratein Serbia is 24. This indicator displays great variations forall background characteristics. It is 7 in urban and 47 inrural areas. It is also shows significant differences whenthe education of mothers and wealth status are observed. The total fertility rate in Serbia is 1.7. It is higher amongmothers with lower education and wealth status.Table RH.1: Adolescent birth rate and totalfertility rate, Serbia, 2010Adolescent birth rates and total fertility ratesAdolescent birthrate 1 (Age-specificfertility rate forwomen age 15–19)Totalfertility rateRegionBelgrade 2.4 1.2Vojvodina 37.7 2.1Sumadija and Western Serbia 16.8 1.7Southern and Eastern Serbia 36.1 1.8AreaUrban 6.7 1.5Rural 47.2 2.0Women’s educationPrimary 153.1 2.9Secondary 16.5 1.9Higher 0.0 1.4Wealth index quintilePoorest 107.8 2.8Second 16.0 1.6Middle 21.2 1.2Fourth 4.7 1.6Richest .0 1.5Total 23.9 1.71MICS indicator 5.1; MDG indicator 5.4112MULTIPLE INDICATOR CLUSTER SURVEY 2010
