Students are required tobring pencils, sketchbook, and a tube set <strong>of</strong> watercolors to thefirst class. On Friday, they work in the classroom based onobservations <strong>of</strong> plants and flowers. On Saturday, studentsmeet at Longwood Gardens where they have the opportunityto paint and draw flowers from the gardens. Other highlights include important Greco-Roman antiquities, Buddhist art, a distinguished collection <strong>of</strong>African art, and an array <strong>of</strong> Mayan and other Pre-Columbianpieces. Students are introduced to different cultures and timeperiods and how art and artifacts were influenced by orcreated in support <strong>of</strong> religious and societal aims. Because <strong>of</strong>the great variety exhibited, the instructor may choose aparticular area <strong>of</strong> concentration. Students meet on Friday at<strong>Immaculata</strong> for an overview and the context <strong>of</strong> the art to beviewed on Saturday. On Saturday, the class meets at theentrance to the museum. Since its founding in 1876, themuseum has acquired major examples <strong>of</strong> art. The first part <strong>of</strong>the tour includes works by American artists such as ThomasEakins, Mary Cassatt, and Andy Warhol. The second part <strong>of</strong>the tour looks at the Renaissance and Baroque periods <strong>of</strong> art.Students meet on Friday at <strong>Immaculata</strong> for an overview <strong>of</strong> theworks to be viewed at the museum and to engage in hands-onexperiences, trying techniques used by the masters. They are introduced to variousstyles <strong>of</strong> painting as well as to the changes in approach tosubject matter. Exhibiting American art in a 19 th centurygrist mill, the Brandywine River Museum is internationallyknown for its unparalleled collection <strong>of</strong> works by threegenerations <strong>of</strong> Wyeths and its fine collection <strong>of</strong> Americanillustration, still life, and landscape painting. Students meeton Friday at <strong>Immaculata</strong> for discussion and context <strong>of</strong> the artat the Brandywine Museum. On Saturday, the class meets atthe entrance to the museum.
