Chapter 1:INTRODUCTIONThe OTC WiJET is an IEEE 802.11g compliant product designed specifically for wirelesslyconnecting projectors and monitors to computers. It connects to the existing VGA connector of theprojector/monitor and offers 802.11g connectivity up to 54-Mbps with wireless-equippedcomputers ♦ . Once connected, the WiJET replicates the PC’s screen image on its VGA-connectedprojector/monitor.There are two models of the WiJETs:WiJET.G: This model provides screen replication functions and is ideal for staticpresentations such as those generated by MS PowerPoint. It can handle most slideshowsand even has the ability to show rapid snapshots of video images.WiGET.video: This model is designed to allow video streaming and is capable ofrendering audio-visual presentations in the MPEG format. It will even render video filesembedded in a MS PowerPoint presentation. In addition it has the same screen-replicationfunctions as the WiJET.G, but it abilities to play moving images as well as sound makes itin situations where dynamic presentations are needed. This technical manual covers both models. Capabilities that are only available to theWiGET.video will be clearly identified. The advantages of the WiJETs become obvious in any conference room where the ideal location ofthe projector or display screen makes it difficult for a laptop or desktop to connect to it whileallowing the speaker to maintain audience interest. All too frequently, projectors placed in themiddle of the room force the speaker to present from the middle of the room, because of the VGAcable that exists between the projector and the presenter’s laptop.WiJETs solves this problem by allowing any laptop or desktop with an 802.11g Wi-Fi adapter togive the presentation from anywhere in the conference room - wherever the presenter feels wouldgarner the most amount of interest from the audience. True freedom from wires allows for moreflexibility in meetings.Another application of the WiJETs is in a situation where multiple presenters must givepresentations in rapid succession. The WiJETs allows for fast handover of the projector or monitorwithout the hassle of removing and reattaching the VGA cable. Using the easy-to-use PresentationSession Manager - PSM, a presenter can effortlessly connect to a WiJET, give a presentation, anddisconnect from the WiJET to allow another user to connect to it without touching a single cable.A third application that showcases the advantages of the WiJETs is where there are multipleconference rooms with multiple projectors. A WiJET in every conference room will substantiallysave setup time when the presenter comes into the room. When a WiJET is powered up, it displaysits identity, including SSID, name, IP address, and MAC address. The presenter’s PSMautomatically discovers all connectable WiJET’s and show their identities. The presenter can easilyselect the desired WiJET’s and be instantly connected to their respective projectors forpresentation. This removes a significant amount of setup time associated with presenters movingfrom room to room to give their presentations, ultimately saving IT costs.WiJET are devices that will change how people come to view conferences and meeting rooms.Instead of being static meeting place, the conference rooms can now become dynamic meetingplaces where new thoughts and ideas can be exchanged and created.♦ The WiJET also works with 802.11b radios at their lower 11-Mbps rate.WiJET Technical Manual Page 1 of 34

Chapter 3:USING YOUR WiJET3.1 Using the WiJET in a MeetingIn addition to the convenience of using wireless connections, the most important benefit ofeliminating the VGA cable when using presentation projectors or monitors is to enable fasthandover of the projector or monitor control among multiple meeting participants. The PresentationSession Manager (PSM) provides a simple user interface that allows for quick rotation ofpresentations among multiple presenters. The following simple steps illustrate how a successfulWireless Presentation Meeting unfolds:1. Copies of the WiJET installation CD are kept in the meeting room where a WiJET is located. Before the presentations starts, the meeting host identifies the participants who do not yet have thePresentation Session Manager on their computers and hands them a copy of one of the WiJETCDs.2. The host asks all meeting participants to establish a wireless link to the WiJET before themeeting starts. Most participants can accomplish this by using the Windows networking facility. These wireless links should be maintained throughout the meeting although only one presenter canuse the projector or monitor at a given time. Confirming wireless links before the meeting startshelps insure a smooth presentation session.Note: At any given time, only one designated PC can be connected to the WiJET and makepresentation.3. At the click of one button in the PSM, the incumbent presenter yields the floor (the WiJET andits projector/monitor) to another presenter while still maintaining a live wireless link to the WiJET.4. A waiting presenter, with the already established wireless link, can instantaneously take overthe projector/monitor once the previous presenter has released the connection.Normal meeting etiquettes can determine how the control of the projector/monitor may be rotatedamong different presenters. The WiJET and the PSM make such rotations easy and quick, helpingto transform meetings into dynamic forums.3.2 Starting the WiJETFor optimal performance, disable your video card’s hardware acceleration. From the Display Properties window, click on the “Settings” tab. Click on the “Advanced” buttonfollowed by the “Troubleshoot” tab. Move the slider for “Hardware acceleration” to none. When the WiJET unit is powered on, a boot up sequence will follow. After the WiJET is fully up andrunning, the unit will display the following image (Figure 3.1) together with several informativesystem messages:WiJET Technical Manual Page 7 of 34

Figure 3.1 WiJET.G and WiJET.Video Banner PagesThe system messages will be displayed at the top of the screen above the banner image. Theyconsist of three lines. The top line displays the SSID and the firmware version of the WiJET whilethe second line reports the channel, radio mode, IP address, and MAC address. The last linedisplays a list of detected channels that might cause interference. On the right end of this line, asquare is shown in one of two colors.• Green: any correctly configured PC with a wireless adapter can connect with the WiJET.• Yellow: the connecting PC’s wireless adapter must have the correct security setting beforea connection can be established. An example of the messages is given below:SSID=WiJET.VideoVersion: 1.3.aChannel=11 Mode=Local Access Point IP=169.254.98.171 MAC=00:60:B3:25:4B:41RF activities detected on other channels (none). There are several variations to the message on the second third line. The variations and what theymean are as follows:RF activities detected on other channels (none). No other 802.11b/g channels are detected - other than the WiJET itself.RF activities detected on other channels (8, 9).Other 802.11g/b channels are detected to be in use, but they do not interfere with theprimary WiJET channel.RF activities detected on other channels (1, 5, 8, 11). WARNING: Interference.Existing channels detected and interference has been found. If the WiJET is in a noisy RFenvironment, the PSM may have trouble connecting and maintaining connections to theWiJET even if a connection can be established.WiJET Technical Manual Page 8 of 34

Note:The WiJET updates this information whenever the banner page appears. In a noisyenvironment, channel information might be outdated quickly since the WiJET doesnot monitor RF channels continuously.Once the WiJET is running and the above information is noted, the presentation computer mustnow be configured to connect with the unit.3.2.1 WiJET Wireless Link ModesWiJET supports two wireless link modes:• Local Access Point:This is the default mode of WiJET where the bandwidth of the wireless link with thepresentation PC is maximized. This mode provides better performance since thewireless link is used only between the PC and the WiJET. To run in this mode, checkthat the “Radio mode” of the WiJET is set to “Access Point”. Use the Web-basedconfiguration utility to check and set the WiJET’s configuration if necessary.• Infrastructure Station:This mode enables the WiJET to join an existing wireless network. Any PC on thenetwork will be able to access the WiJET while maintaining all its existing networkconnections. The performance of WiJET, however, may be adversely affected by theoverall network traffic. To run in this mode, check that the “Radio mode” of the WiJETis set to “Infrastructure Station”. Be sure to put in the matching SSID and securitysettings of the target access point. The instructions for using the Web-based administration are covered in Chapter 4:3.3 Configuring Your Computer to Connect with WiJETBefore starting the Presentation Session Manager, the network interface of the computer musthave a valid IP address. For computers running in DHCP client mode when a DHCP server isunavailable, it may take several minutes for the computers to fall back to a default IP address. Ifusers cannot obtain a valid IP address for the network interface, please refer to any networkadministration references for instructions on how to assign an IP address to a networkinterface/connection.NOTE:The computer’s network interface must have a valid IP address before the PSMstarts a session with the WiJET.Video.3.3.1 Configuring the Wireless Adapter to Link with the WiJETIn the default mode, the WiJET operates as an Access Point (AP). Look at the banner pageon the projector/monitor screen to determine the SSID and the channel that the WiJET iscurrently set on.The SSID will be displayed on the upper left corner of the monitor/projector. The wirelesscard must be set to work under the infrastructure station mode. There are many approachesto configuring wireless adapters. The following is an example of a typical configuration.Open the Wireless Configuration Utility (which may be under a different name) providedby the manufacturer of the wireless network adapter and modify the settings as follows:Change the network type to the “Infrastructure” mode (if applicable).Change the SSID of the wireless network adapter to match that displayed on the upperleft corner of the projector/monitor screen.WiJET Technical Manual Page 9 of 34

Observe the indications in the wireless configuration program to confirm that it isconnecting to the WiJET.For “Infrastructure Station” mode, the WiJET must be given the SSID of the desired accesspoint. Consult the WiJET “Configuration” Web page [4.3.2 Configuration] for details.3.3.2 Windows XP only: Configure the Wireless Network AdapterTo configure the Wireless Network Adapter for Windows XP, first determine if the WirelessAdapter is natively supported. The easiest way to know this is to see if an icon is in thesystem tray as shown in Figure 3.2.Figure 3.2: Network Adapter with native support under Windows XP.If the system tray looks like the figure shown in Figure 3.2, the wireless card is nativelysupported under Windows XP. Doing so mayirreversibly corrupt the internal firmware of WiJET.4.2 Accessing the Web-based AdministrationTo access the web-based administration tool, the user should install the PSM as described inChapter 2.To use WiJET Administration Manager the user must have an IEEE 802.11b/g wireless networkadapter and the WiJET utilities installed on their PCs. Once a session has been established, theuser will be able to right click on the OTC Wireless logo located in the System Tray and select theoption as shown in Figure 4.1a.Figure 4.1a System Tray MenuFigure 4.1b Administration Unit SelectNext select the WiJET to be configured and click the “Admin” button as shown in Figure 4.1b.WiJET Technical Manual Page 18 of 34

A password dialog box will appear. The Default User Name is admin and the password is public.4.3 Configuring the WiJET Using the Administrative ToolThe Web-based administrative application consists of four main tabs: Configuration, Administration,Upload, and Help. These tabs are described in detail below.4.3.1 WiJET Product and SupportThe “Help” tab contains information regarding the product and technical support. It also showsthe firmware version. It is important to know your unit’s firmware version before contactingtechnical support.Figure 4.2 Web-based Administrative HELP pageWiJET Technical Manual Page 19 of 34

4.3.2 ConfigurationThe “Configuration” page displays all the modes and parameters that the user may set for theWiJET unit. The screen shot of the configuration page is shown in figure 4.3. The screen shot isbased on that for the WiJET.Video. For the WiJET.G, inapplicable and unavailable data items willnot appear on the configuration page. All the configurable options are described in detail below.WiJET.Video only features will be clearly identified.Remember to click “Apply” on the bottom of this page whenever settings are modified. The“Cancel” button may be used to discard all changes and revert to previously stored parametervalues.Operational Mode & Parameters:TV Format: The WiJET.Video supports both NTSC and PAL standards. Click on thedropdown list and choose the appropriate TV format. This setting only affects the videosignal output. This setting defaults to the regional standard.Video Output Format: With optional adapters, the WiJET.Video can support composite andcomponent outputs in addition to S-Video.Radio Mode: The WiJET can support two radio modes: Access Point and InfrastructureStation. By default, WiJET operates as an Access Point. For more information about theadvantages of each type of radio mode, please refer to Section 3.2.1 “WiJET ConnectionModes.”Operation Mode: When the WiJET is set as an Access Point, the operation mode can beeither automatic or manual. The default mode is Automatic. Under Automatic mode, theWiJET will automatically select an unused SSID and a clear available channel upon bootup. The SSID will be based on the name entered by the user in the SSID field. If no otheraccess point using the same name is detected during the unit’s boot-up, this name will thenbe used as the SSID. If the name is detected being used by other radios, the WiJET willautomatically append the name with a number between 00 and 09. This feature ensuresthat SSIDs are not duplicated. For example, if XXYYZZ is entered in the SSID field andduring boot-up no other access point is detected as using XXYYZZ as the SSID, thenXXYYZZ will be the SSID of this unit. Otherwise, the WiJET will select an unused namefrom XXYYZZ01, XXYYZZ02, XXYYZZ03 … XXYYZZ09 as its SSID. Under Manual mode, the WiJET will use the SSID and channel assigned by the user. When a unit is configured as an Infrastructure Station, only Manual mode operations areallowed.SSID / Network Name: The text field for entering a SSID. The SSID can be up to 30characters long. The meaning of this field depends on the operating mode of the unit:• As an Infrastructure Station the unit uses the SSID to join an existing WirelessNetwork• As an Access Point the unit uses the SSID for other wireless adapters to connectwith it.Default Channel: In Automatic mode this will be the channel utilized in an interference-freeenvironment. Under manual mode the unit will operate only on a specified channel.WiJET Technical Manual Page 20 of 34

Output power: Users can lower the output power level to decrease the radio coveragearea. Decreasing the output power may help avoid occurrences of interference when manyunits are deployed in a small area.Reset to Factory Default: This button resets all operating parameters to the WiJET’sfactory default values. Use this feature with caution as once reset, the connected PC mayhave problems being able to maintain its connection with the unit. You may have to changethe PC’s settings in order to reconnect to the WiJET.Apply Settings: Click “Apply” to save any changes made. Click “Cancel” to abort allchanges.WEP Security Setting:Authentication Type: Under an “Open System”, the wireless association authenticatingprocess does not check the encryption key and allows any Wi-Fi radio to connect to theunit. When “Shared Key” is enabled, the encryption key is checked during the firstauthentication process and only the Wi-Fi radios with the correct encryption keys will beable to connect to the unit.WEP enabled: This check box allows users to enable or disable the WEP encryptionfeatures. The product currently supports the default (shared) 64-bit and 128-bit WEP keyscheme as defined in the 802.11 standard. A set of four keys needs to be entered in thedefault-key scheme.WEP key length: The 64-bit encryption is currently the 802.11 standard. The 128-bitencryption protocol is supported by equipment from only a limited number of vendors. Notethat the “user-controlled” portion of the 64-bit encryption is just 40 bits (10 Hex digits) andthat for 128-bit encryption it is just 104 bits (26 Hex digits)—3-bytes of the encryption keyare internal to the encryption algorithm.WEP Keys: A set of four keys needs to be created when WEP is enabled.Transmission key selection: One of the four WEP keys needs to be selected fortransmitting data frames. The radio can de-encrypt received data encrypted in any one ofthe four entered keys, but it uses only one of the default keys for transmitting its data.WiJET Technical Manual Page 21 of 34

If there is none available,an IP will be assigned to the unit automatically based on the connected PC’s subnet. Manual-Static mode allows the user to set a fixed IP address.IP Address: In Automatic-DHCP mode, this value will be the default IP if no DHCP server isfound. In Manual-Static mode, this value will be the unit’s fixed IP address.Subnet Mask: In Automatic-DHCP mode, this value will be the default subnet mask if no DHCPserver is found. In Manual-Static mode, this value will be the unit’s fixed subnet mask.Default Gateway: In Automatic-DHCP mode, this value will be the default gateway if no DHCPserver is found. In Manual-Static mode, this value will be the unit’s fixed default gateway.Apply Network Settings: Saves changes made to the unit’s network configuration and reboots theunit.User Name: Allows change of the default user name of “Admin”. The length is limited to 16characters for this field.Enter New Password: Allows change of the default password of “public”. The length is limited to16 characters for this field.Confirm New Password: Retype the desired password for confirmation.Apply Account Settings: Saves changes made to the unit’s administrative configuration.Reboot WiJET: This will reboot the unit. 4.3.4 Upload PageThis page contains two features: upload firmware and upload banners.Firmware upload: Uploads a new firmware to the device. This is only for upgrading the firmwareon the unit if the manufacturer has identified and fixed some defects in the firmware. For aFirmware file, select the file with the extension of .tar.gz. Use only official firmware upgradesor patches from an authorized distributor.Note: Firmware patches and upgrades are only available directly from OTC Wireless, Inc orauthorized distributors. Do not download firmware patches from the Internet as these cannot beauthenticated and may damage your hardware.Banner uploads: Upload a collection of banner pages. Each banner page is a JPEG file. EachJPEG file will be displayed for a specified duration in terms of seconds and in its specified orderin the collection. The WiJET will display the banner pages in a collection one by one according tothe rules specified. Modify the collection by changing the values of the duration and order, oreven permanently delete unwanted banners by selecting the “Delete” checkbox.Banner Page Specifications:• Must be a JPG image• Recommended screen resolution: 800x600 pixels• Maximum screen resolution: 1024x768• Maximum file size (WiJET.G): 1 Mb• Maximum file size (WiJET.Video): 4 MbIn order to be able to use all the features supported by the management tool you may have tomanually configure Internet Explorer in the following manner:1. Go to Internet options, and on the “Security” tab, add the IP address to the trusted sites orlocal intranet.2. Click “Custom Level …” to enable ActiveX controls.Once configured correctly, the management tool can then automatically monitor the availablespace on the WiJET.Space available: Shows the currently available memory space for uploading banner pages.Current banners: Shows the collection of banner pages currently in the unit’s memory. Select the“Delete” option to remove an image.Add new banners: Upload a batch of banner pages at one time to the unit. Modify “Duration”fields to specify the display time for each uploaded image. The minimum allowed value is 5seconds. A duration value of 0 will skip the image. A duration value of -1 will display an imageindefinitely. Arrange the “Order” fields for the desired image display sequence.Warning: When uploading the firmware or banner page, do NOT power off ordisconnect the unit. Doing so may irreversibly corrupt the internalfirmware.WiJET Technical Manual Page 27 of 34

Figure 4.5 Firmware and Banner Page Upload4.3.5 Screen Refresh Rate SettingA few makes of monitor and projector may not work well with the WiJET’s default screen “refreshrate.” A special Web page is provided for users to manually configure the “refresh rate” of theWiJET to allow monitors/projectors that have problems with WiJET rendered images. WiJETsboots up at a screen resolution of 800x600 pixels, but it often connects with the PSM at yourWiJET Technical Manual Page 28 of 34

PC’s resolution (often at 1024x768). Your display device may have problems resolving thedifferences between the display configurations. While connected with the Web served Administrative application, enter the special Web page filename of “refresh.cgi.” Append this text after the standard beginning of http://WiJET-IP-Address/.You should obtain the following screen image:For each resolution, there is a dropdown list of WiJET-supported refresh rate. Choose your displaydevice’s factory setting, if the WiJET offers one. Usually a very close value suffices. Otherwise, select the highest value that renders a good image on your display device. Click “Apply” or“Cancel” as appropriate at any time.Follow the steps below if you need to experiment in order to find the right refresh rate:1. Have the Web Admin running and your PC wirelessly connected with the target displaydevice. Please make sure you have a strong wireless connection.2. Use the PSM to establish a connection with the WiJET unit – this allows you to see theresults of what you are doing.3. Keep the PSM connected with the unit and keep the Web Admin utility open.4. Choose the next highest refresh rate that you have not tried and "Apply".WiJET Technical Manual Page 29 of 34

5. On the PSM, click on “Release the Session”, wait 5 seconds and reconnect to the WiJETby clicking on “Establish a Session”.6. With a strong wireless connection, you should see the replicated PC image on the WiJET’sattached display unit in about 5 seconds. If you don’t see an image in 15 seconds go backto Step 4 and use the next highest refresh rate.7. Most display devices have some “tolerance” to the refresh rate. To expedite your searchfor the best rate, you may skip 1 or two values in an initial “fast and shallow” search. Ifappropriate, you may then search for a better rate around this value with the sameprocedure outlined here.Note: The new refresh rates are immediately memorized by the WiJET unit. However, you mustrelease and re-establish connection from PSM to allow the new refresh rate to take effect.Warning: User setting of the refresh rate is NOT changed to factory default whenthe “Reset to Factory” operation is performed.See Section 2.1.5 for detail.WiJET Technical Manual Page 30 of 34

Chapter 5: TROUBLESHOOTING5.1 Unable to Connect or Establish a Session with UnitThe “WiJET not available” message box displays while trying to establish a session with theWiJET. The possible causes are listed below.1) The SSID of the PC wireless adapter does not match the SSID of the WiJET.2) The computer’s Wi-Fi Adapter is not set to Infrastructure mode.3) The computer’s Wi-Fi Adapter is not set to use the same encryption settings as theWiJET once the unit’s default encryption settings were changed.4) The unit is somehow not receiving the wireless signal, power-cycle the WiJET(Unplug, wait 5 seconds and then reconnect the power supply to the WiJET).5) With certain brands of PCMCIA 802.11g Wi-Fi cards, it may take a little longer tolink up with the WiJET. The driver and feature set of certain brands may cause thelink up time between the WiJET and the computer to take longer. Simply click onthe “Establish a Session” on the PSM’s main dialog again and wait for theconnection to be established.6) Some DHCP-enabled wireless network connection client may take a while to obtaina valid OS-assigned IP address. Use the “ipconfig” command to see if a valid IPaddress has been assigned to the corresponding network connection. If the PCnow has a valid IP address, click on the “Establish a Session” on the PSM’s maindialog again.5.2 The WiJET screen appears frozen during a presentationThis indicates that the WiJET unit has suffered a link-loss. New material from the PC cannot reachthe unit. The WiJET, therefore, continues to display the last image. The WiJET and PSM have anintelligent built-in mechanism to detect the link-loss and will automatically attempt to restore theconnection. When a link-loss has been detected, the PSM displays a message box and tries toautomatically restore the connection. If the auto-reconnection attempt is successful, the user doesnot need to do anything. In this case, the auto-reconnection is user transparent. However, if thelink-loss persists, for instance, if the PCMCIA card was pulled out, then the user must restore thewireless link so that the auto-reconnection attempts can succeed. The presentation screen will notbe updated once the link is lost until a connection is re-established.5.2.1 The WiJET displays the Banner PageIf link -loss lasts for an extended period of time, the WiJET will terminate the reconnectionwaiting state and display the banner page. The default duration for a link-loss is 8 seconds. The WiJET will attempt to reconnect 3 timesafter this duration. If no reconnection can be established before the reconnection time runsout, the WiJET will revert to displaying the banner page.5.3 The WiJET Session is interrupted during a presentationThis signals that the unit has detected a link-loss for an extended period of time or severecommunication error. Since the product is designed to support one presentation at a time, theproduct cleans up the communication error and returns itself to the initial state (banner page). Then, the WiJET will be “available for connection” in order to prevent the unit from being locked upby one potentially malfunctioning computer. With the auto-reconnection feature, this rarely occurs. When this condition occurs, follow the steps below:WiJET Technical Manual Page 31 of 34

1) Click “Establish a Session” to try to resume the presentation. If the presentation issuccessfully resumed, the abnormal condition is just temporary and no further actionis required.2) If the current presenter failed to resume presentation by clicking “Establish a Session”,have another presenter try to “Establish a Session”. If this new presenter cansuccessfully start a presentation, the problem was localized on the previouspresenter’s computer and/or its wireless card. Address that problem after the meeting.3) If a second presenter also fails to “Establish a Session” to the unit, a persistentabnormal condition has to be identified. Follow other troubleshooting tips in thischapter to identify the persistent abnormal condition.5.4 Radio InterferenceEliminate or reduce RF interference by trying the following:• Find the “channel” used by the source of the interference and coordinate the networkand the interference source to be on channels that are at least 20MHz, but preferably30MHz, apart. In other words, set all neighboring networks to be 4 channels apart. The WiJET automatically finds the clearest channel.• Move the unit to a location where the interference is minimized. In general, keep agood distance between the WiJET and its presentation PC away from other wirelessdevices.• Avoid using 2.4GHz cordless phones in the vicinity of the radio.• Keep the computer and the WiJET unit away from microwave ovens and large metalobjects.• Consult the dealer or an experienced radio technician for help.5.5 Screen Refresh Rate SettingThere are few monitor and projectors that do no work well with the default “refresh rate” setting ofWiJET. A special Web page is provided for user setting in case your monitor/projector does notsee WiJET-rendered images. Please see Section 4.3.5: Screen Refresh Rate Setting.5.6 Technical SupportVisit http://www.otcwireless.com/ for additional information about OTC Wireless products and upto-datecontact information for technical support.WiJET Technical Manual Page 32 of 34
