even cell phones—the devices that haveunique mesmerizing end product forchildren and that have even delinked themfrom reading habits or even makingattempts to do so.Hada, deliberately or unconsciouslyavoids to say anything on 'Policy' and'Politics' of contemporary media scene inglobalised India. But he does not hesitatein emphasizing the peculiarity, possiblyeven uniqueness or bifurcation in politics'of perception and 'politics of practices' onmedia. With further implication thatnirvana could practically be within reach,no longer through transcendence of classstruggles in communist utopia, but byrescuing 'policy' from the ghostliness ofclashing social and economic agendas. Inthe essays like 'Advocates of Middle Class''Newspapers in Villages and Small Towns','<strong>Hindi</strong> on the Flipside of Hinglish' and'Changing Perspective' he deals with multifacetedissues in the domains oftelecommunication infrastructure andbroadcasting practice. Hada criticallyevaluates a brief history of discoursebetween 'Information Society' and 'CivilSociety'. He goes on to summarize in detailthe empirical issues, the global institutionalactors and their social impact on Indiansociety. On one level the book is a masterpieceof compression. Yet at times especially inthe earlier chapters, this virtue alsosometimes becomes its vice. The details ofthe arguments are so densely delivered, thethickets of information so tightly clustered, that for a student reader at least, it wouldrequire additional commentary from aninstructor. Not withstanding this drawback, thebook’s particular merit is to link togethersocially relevant issues in which mostIndian academicians delve into off and onand grope for the way out from the area ofdarkness. The essay 'You have come a LongWay Baby' is a fine example of how theinternational variety of changes hasradically transformed the image of Indianwoman as a whole conventional perceptionof an ideal woman is replaced with 'selfempowered','independent' and 'smart',though it appears to be realistic andimaginary but at the same time it is inconcurrence with and within the domainof Indian long-established value system. Itis rich fare, and thus hard to summarizepassably in the course of a review. Asintermittently is the case, not all essays canbe made to fit in the confines andcategories provided but frankly this is notan instance with Hada's present study, aseach essay incorporated in the book isworthwhile contribution to our knowledge, and on the whole it can be said that anyreader or researcher would agree that it isindeed a very stimulating work in the fieldof media studies.
