In 2011Chandrabali Singh translated the poemsof Emily Dickinson for Vani Prakashan,Vardha. In the same decade Uma Pathaktranslated the stories of Grimms, HansAnderson and Kipling and also Naipauland Paulo Coelho.The Indian English writer R.K.Narayan's 'The English Teacher' ('JeevanMrityu') and 'Bachelor of Arts' weretranslated. In the same category thetranslation of almost all the novels ofVikram Seth, Naipaul, Amitav Ghosh andPaulo Coelho are available. In thecontemporary times the literature ofspiritual gurus like Osho, Dipal Chopraand Shiv Khera has been translated veryquickly.Between 1848 and 2012 a great dealof literature in English was translated intoHindi and is also being read with greatinterest. In the library of Sahitya Akademithere is a separate section for translatedfiction. One can guess from the worn-outcondition of books kept there that theyhave been read frequently. This is anencouraging fact for translators andpublishers.I had the opportunity of translatingthe English literature of two authors. Thefirst is Khalil Gibran, the philosopher, poet,short story writer and novelist of the 19thcentury, and Amitav Ghosh, a novelist ofmodern times. Translating my favouriteauthors was a labour of love for me. Itwas the reiteration of the pleasure ofreading them in the original that I wantedto share with the perceptive readers ofHindi. I had begun to read Khalil Gibranin my youth. His literature is available inboth Arabic and English. His famous worksin Arabic are 'The Spirits Rebellious', 'Tearand Smiles', 'Broken Wings', 'Thoughtsand Meditation' and 'The Voice of theMaster'. Khalil himself wrote in English'The Prophet', "Jesus Son of God','Wanderer' and 'Sand and Foam'. Whiletranslating him, there was always a doubtin my mind. Khalil himself translated intoEnglish some of his works written in Arabicwhile others translated some of his otherworks.
